: Front Leaf Springs for XJ

High,
after I have done the search bottom with "Front Leaf Springs XJ" and found a lot, but not what I am searching for.

My project is starting now to swap the d30 and d35 in change with a d44 front and rear from a 79 waggy.
Before welding the front d44 with XJ mounts, what´s the possibilty to use leaf springs in front with the old mounts.

Would I solve an other problem with the leaf springs in front,
I dont have to change the upper and lower control arms.
In the future a lift would be easier, may be some day I want to have 35".
Who have done this and where can I find detailed infos.
What is your opinion in pros and cons to that.

regards Bengt

The generaly use of my XJ is for long tours with heavy weight and a lot of hill climbing on stony trails. (No rock crawling, no mud)
I have a Chevy SB in front, 5" lift with 33".

my only concern with using the control arm mounts is I have torn one off the passengers side with a normal suspension(coils and arms) as well as cracked the drivers side.I would not do this unless you really beef up the area.since mine is gone any ways I am rebuilding this area with 1/4 plate. After I rebuild the area I plan on using XJ springs back wards to stretch the front end for better angles.I will use full hydro steering though so that wont be a problem.I will also flip my rear springs to stretch this out and have a better angle I should be around 110-112 inches which will be fine with 40s or 42s:flipoff2: and full width axles.Look for great things coming from Barnyard fab coming spring 03

You could make a gusset, or i have also seen bar stock used as a BEEFY gusset behind the LCA. I did a *little* help on Ryan's (kajeepxj) jeep. He has a killer set up, and he really used all the stock stuff on an xj and got some cool brackets fabbed up for the front spring hangers that bolt into the front of the subframe/frame whateva you call that thingy:flipoff2: And it wheels with the best of em'!

Go to www.rebelrockrunners.org. His name is Ryan Pearson, just type up in the forum or email him.

I know, dont the 38.5s just look alittle too small. Are you gonna run 15in rims or 16.5s?

So how far are you? Did you get the 78-79 F350 D60 with 31in spring perch.

If I find one of those in the nex few months Ill run leafs, and later convert back to coils. alot later. keep it simple get it done!

So stock XJ leafs up front, how tall would that set you, any idea?
I have a set of ford leafs centered and a set of XJ leafs could also flip so Ill have three different options when the time comes.

Running 40-42's is gonna require alot of lift, probably more than a front leaf conversion will provide.

The RE drop bracket kit may work well for you to strengthen the area. Will you be running a shackle forward setup?

Also try Nick @ Extreme Engineering ( he hangs on the www.colorado4x4.org board).

He has a leaf sprung XJ running 38's. A nice job and he wheels the shiat out of it. He did not use the lower mounts, he re-inforced the frame and also re-inforced the front "frame rails" with a custom front bumper/forward spring mount.

I run 8" of lift to clear 35's and he is lower than me clearing 38's. He runs full width axles.

you can run what ever you want for tires if you set it up right.stretched and full width will fit alot bigger tires then a stock XJ set up my rig is getting most of the body removed so running big tires wont be a problem I will post picks soon of the whole thing. I am running 37s now with room to fit 38.5s and only 8 inches of lift.

I am a little late for the post but, I have done the conversion on my XJ and it works damn good. I didn't use the stock control arm bracket because it will throw your leafs at an off angle. I cut them off, welded on new mounts farther up the frame rail (unibody) (extending my wheel base) and narrowing the width( distance between) of the leaf springs giving better leverage for my D44. hence, better flex. I also set it up with shackel reversal so the stock control arm mount really wouldn't have worked. I used Skyjacker 2.5" wrangler springs and it gave me 9.5" of lift with a TBI 350 weighing down the front.

Nice pics of the Cherokee. I have an MJ, well a few MJ's. I am running 1/4 inch angle iron from the bumper to the crossmember and am going to use MJ rear springs on the front. Still working out bugs in the design part of it. Glad I found this site with pics of similar conversions, helps me out a ton.

Thanks.:D

hey, god damned , here i get the things I want to know!
well, i will show my rig, when it is ready! I will create a web site.
I want the leaf springs in front, the german TÜV dont want it.
Do you know what the german TÜV is: Technischer Überwachungs Verein, without him no car has the possiblity to dríve on popular Streets, you have to visit him all 2 years, if you change something to your car the tüv must prove it, and so on,
what I`m telling you here, you should be happy to live in the country of free, I wish I could live there too. Keep on jeeping!

Sounds like they're trying to keep modded Jeeps off the Autobahn perhaps.
I feel your pain! My state (Colorado) allows virtually anything. When my rockbuggy is complete I plan on driving it on the street for fun once in awhile. The cops here would just look at it as a paperwork hassle and keep going. :D

Nice pic Ken,that little camera looks like it's workin pretty good.

The lack of a windshield is the rough part,Ramsey hates it.He lies as flat as he can on the seat to get out of the wind, and pouts.
