So yesterday we decided to go and scout a new trail that we have been talking about running....it took us about 2 hours to walk to the top (a big waterfall with a nice undercut) and back down..there are lots of big climbs that must be at least twice or 3 times the size of the obstacles on the first ICU trail....here is the show stopper...it might be about 100 feet or so to the top, super scary to think about rolling and tumbling to the bottom (for us rookies anyway)..might need to winch at the top...this climb is about half way to the top, and the riverbed above this fall all the way to the top is soooo awesome....so we have to brave this bad boy...

wow, ive seen pics of ASYLUM...super nuts..!!! having not ever seen it other than in pics and knowing that pictures dont do these trails any justice, i dont want to sound cocky but...i think this section of trail is worse..the fall is HUGE...i think that where we are standing in the pic is about the height of ASYLUM, and thats where the real scary part starts...i see helmets and safety lines in my future...!!!! but you would have to come back to confirm that...:smokin: or maybe Lance can confirm when he comes...the best part is that there are lots of other big scary climbs on this trail....this is just the tallest one...!!!

Nolin we love the AZ action you folks run. That Crew is balls out! Keha and I got a good friend that lives in Pheonix...maybe we should fly over and check out some wheeling...Then again Las Vegas is just a short drive over as well.

I think we can run the gultch safely and injury free if we take your advice and everyone esle on Pirate. We do plan on having the right stuff to make it up and down safely. Love that AZ tread!:smokin:

So for fathers day Keoni and i decided that we wanted to hike the new trail again with our family's, it was a good hike, nice day, our wives think we are crazy to think that we can drive up this trail...but thats nothing new..haha..we did a little work, trimmed some trees, took a few more pics, and put a tape measure to these climbs....!!!

The big waterfall is 95+ feet tall from bottom to top...48 feet to the top of the first half then a steep 18 foot climb to a 30 foot off camber section to the top...!!!!

There are also a few 30+ and 40+ foot climbs, some are very steep and others not so bad...need to get some work done so we can start crawling up this trail...:smokin:

oh yah while we were up there we also pulled some hawaiian KOA tree saplings out of the riverbed and took them back to be replanted where they will actually have a chance to grow and thrive....just doing our part to replenish the native Hawaiian plants...!!!

we worked on the trail this weekend, made the "RAMP" to get up the first climb....i tried to drive it but its too tall and the bottom is too soft...as soon as the back tires get close to the wall it just wants to go over backwards...i tried it a few times...:shaking: plus coming down is another story...:D by the time we got it to how you see it in the pic, it was raining. i attempted it a few times but it was too slippery, after sliding off the side of the ramp twice and almost rolling we decided to wait for a dry day...and another vehicle to help roll me back over...i dont know if that expanded metal is the best thing for grip...but its free, and seemed to have just as much grip as the rocks did when they were wet...?!

Im trying... just got a whole bunch of stuff ordered.... so duals with 4.7, budbuilt crossmember, 30spl longfields and I still need a front locker.... either aussie or arb... see how much toy funds i have left.

If it I can't get in in to mitsu's by the end of July (thats when my 24hr a day double job action ends) then i will prolly just do it my damn self after I borrow a cherry picker and engine stand.

plus i am waiting on a package from daves that has all my front axle parts but we are having a few issues with USPS, Davez sent it almost 3 weeks ago and it isn't here yet. I already started ripping stuff apart for my duals, and i hope do be done after I get more spare time.

Keep in mind, until the end of july the only time i am not working is staurday 10am to Sunday 2pm. But this weekend is my fiances and I 3 year anniversary, and her birthday is july2nd...so we will see what free time I have this weekend, othrwise its gonne be done next weekend.

well Paul I might have to seriously consider that. I gotta make a call to friend who was asking me about it. Its a really good offer though, so I will get back to you on that. It rally would be nice cus then I can get to putting in my duals that are sitting on the workbench right now. well that and rebuilding the front axle, so I can DD my rig again.

so we decided to go check out the new section of trail this weekend and see if we could make it up the ramps we made. the ramps were nice and dry when we got there, both of the rigs went right up....

then the 2nd climb.....this is the biggest climb ive ever done so far...after finding the right line, the buggy found good traction and crawled up it....the sketchy part is as you get to the top, on the pass side the climb gets super straight up and it feels like you going to go over backwards...but once the tire clears it its all good:shaking:

Doug tried it a few times but got denied..and ended up breaking something in the front axle..locker, axles?? = 2wd. then on the way down snapped the steering arm off....so his truck is still sitting in the trail waiting for some repairs..

so im super pumped, im at the top....but thats about as far as we can go till we do some more work...so now the real scary part..going down this thing...because of the way it turns at the top you cant go off it straight, you need to kind of just turn pass and go down....but when the back tire pitches up in to the air like 4 feet, shit feels super nuts...for a rookie anyway:D

thanks man, funny you say that...thats where i tried it, and it wasn't going to happen...the pic is kind of deceiving. the grass at the bottom of the climb is deep...it drops down at least 2 more feet right there...and the front tires aren't even on the top yet...maybe a little work.? well be up there soon...:D

so we went up the left side...had to move a little dirt but that was not too hard...after i attacked the climb like 20 times, we finally hit some rocks and got some traction...at the end i had to winch about 2 feet and i was up...after that we just kept going up...we are one climb before the 100 footer...:smokin:

It helps, but its more of a confidence thing...for real support we'll just hook up a winch and let 'um down slow...:D but first we need to see how many actually make it up..

Saturday was awesome...we had Simon over from Australia 4WD TV http://www.4wdtv.com.au/ ...and Rich from Ohana Trails (Oahu) they came to check out what we are doing over here on Maui...we had 8 rigs in attendance and a handful of friends and family...this trail run upped everyone's wheeling level, for everyone but me it was their first time up the new section. check it out...

whats wrong with this pic...? so by this point (the 3rd climb in the trail) we have 1 separated drive shaft, a leaking steering pump, and a ARB that wont engage...in 3 different rigs..

thanks Nolan, yep there is a way out but its for emergency purposes only:D, the rule is: if you drive up then you drive down....or winched up/winched down:D (waiting for those pics)...Joe and i drive the #2 climb the rest got pulled up and i let them down one at a time with my winch, on the way down...:smokin:

looks pretty tough, has anybody tried to drive that sick ass trail yet (to the top)? 6 more months and i will be on oahu with my truck, cant wait. what is the cost to ship from island to island and back ....about 200 i was told before????

When I did it in 09 it was $260 one way and $50 to return within 30 days. After 30 days another $260. That was Oahu to Kauai.

after the last big rain a few months back, the trail really change for the better. the guys been putting some hours to make the trail a bit more useable then it's current state.

there may be a trail run in may.

well now you have the right vehicle....just need to get it "tuned" up a little..
