I am getting close to putting a chevy 60 in my xj, am goint to put a 3 link with upper link on driver side mounted on top of cross member, originaly i was going d44 and was doing stock 4 link with 3/4 heims and poly bushings on other end. i read some where, cant find thread now, to use all heims or hard joints on a 3 link, question is that for upper link or for all links, or does it matter, was thinking 7/8 heims for upper link and 3/4 heims and poly bushings for lowers.

Why would you run a 7/8" hiem on the the upper---and 3/4's on the lowers??? :homer:

No poly's. Off course it'll work, but buy a bunch of them. You'll replace them often. Save the hassle and just get all hard joints.

only reason is i already have a bunch of 3/4's and threaded tubing i was planning on using for control arms for my stock setup, but now with a 3 link i am worried about strength, i guess i will use the 3/4's for panhard and steering, and go with something beefier for control arms.

It doesn't matter what "Ends" you use on your links. You can use bushings in the front, heims in back, Flex joints in front, bushings in back... Doesn't matter. Max flex, use heims or flex joints at BOTH ends.

Definately don't use 3/4" heims on your lowers, they need to be beefy.

Use 7/8" heims on everything.

Use 2" DOM tubing for your lowers, and you can use 1-3/4" for the Upper.
If you want, you can use 3/4" heims for your upper... But I'd recommend 7/8 all around... At least at One end of each link with misalign spacers.

going to use 7/8 cromo heims all around and probably 2x2 square tubing

Depending on if your 3/4" heims are good quality there's no reason not to use them....

Sure you could go with bigger joints but unless you've got some big horsepower rig and plan on lots of air time 3/4" will suit you fine...

My rig has 3/4" heims in the panhard/steering/3-link/4-link.... Rig before that had them in the steering and front 4-link... I got 3-4years of hard crawling/trail riding in the last rig before changing them because they eventually got a little sloppy... New one has a half dozen beatings and they are all still fine... I've even ripped off mounts on the new rig without any issues out of the heims...

I wouldnt go quite so far to say "doesnt matter". Have you ever seen a rubber bushing 3-link in action?

Agreed. Quality 3/4" heims are just fine for us 4.0 guys. I run QA1 heims on both ends off all my uppers and on my trac arm. Steering will get 7/8"s.

If your going with like a Ruffstuff deal, I'd get 7/8's just to be safe.

I run 1.25" Chromo's on the lowers and 7/8" chromo's on the uppers.

I have learned the hard way when it comes to under building something. I have already destroyed 1" Johnny Joints.

7/8" for lowers and 3/4" uppers are the minimum IMO. And you will find yourself replacing them every so often.

i am running a i6 but i am putting a doubler so i will go with 7/8th all around, and why would you recomend smaller heims for upper as in a 3 link i think that upper would see more stress than the lowers.

alittle easier fitment if you are tight for spots. And stress from the design of the link set up and stress from landing the links down on a rock are two different things.
