: Longer Wheelbase, where to stretch it out?
punkskalar 10-21-2002, 02:36 PM I have a standard 79.9" wheelbase frame, and was curious as to where most of you would stretch the wheelbase at to get around 90-92" worth... I don't want lots of frame sticking out in the rear past the tub, but don't really care in the front. Im using XJ springs all around, and was curious what your thoughts would be. Stretch in the rear and front, just the rear, just the front, etc... I am thinking all of this due to weight distribution, if you stretch mostly in the front, your motor sits back and the weight is more centered, but i dunno, any ideas? Im down to the frame now, just gotta make all the mounts and such...
mud-magnet 10-21-2002, 03:52 PM personally i'd just widen open the stock spring hangers so they fit the 2.5" wide springs but leave them mount right where they would stock, then the length of the springs would lengthen your w/b..... then extend the front on the ends to mount your shackles......... that way your not cutting and lengthing the frame and having to worry about body mount changes( if your using the sammy body) and you equally lengthen it about 8"(???) front and rear...... i don't know how long your springs are but it would through your w/b out how ever much longer the springs are from stock.....
just the way i would do it......:flipoff2:
Slowzuki 10-21-2002, 07:19 PM You've been pretty quiet lately mud magnet, working on your rig?
Did you make it out to the trail run with the east coast crawlers?

Total Distorsion 10-21-2002, 08:22 PM Yeah I would do what mud-magnet said. Mount the springs in the stock location, but also turn the packs around like Fatkid did on his. That looks like it works pretty well.
godzuki 10-21-2002, 08:32 PM WELL IM AT 87" AND RUNNING 38"SXS WITH CJ SPRINGS AND MOVING THE SPRING PERCHES . OH YEA I PUT SOME CRUSIER AXELS UNDER IT.

rotozuk 10-22-2002, 03:11 PM There are a number of options, and all are pretty good.
Since you are running leaf springs, that kills leaving the frame along, and using a 3 or 4 link suspension to stretch things out.
I myself added several inches to the front of the frame as this made room for my longer springs, and a nice place ti sit the winch.
I have seen one where the guy cut his frame right about the shock mount area on the front, and stretch the frame there. This gave about the same as above, but added some more axles clearance. Seems to work well.
I debated cutting the frame around the middle and stretching there, but the taper of the frame rails was going to make that a little tougher.
The long and the short of it comes down to a few things. tire size, suspension type, and do you want to maintain the rear of the tub?
For myself, I needed room for my front tires to clear my firewall with a shackle reversal, so stretching the front made very good sense. Keeping the rear tub will be nice in these cooler months were running a soft top will be an advantage.

fatkid 10-22-2002, 10:12 PM My wheel base is at the 94" mark and it been really cool, the Sammy works so much better than before. However it didn't really feel like I had to learn to drive the rig again.:)
Dychen 10-22-2002, 10:25 PM using yj springs and the stock spring locations, about what will that put my wheelbase at. I'm currently looking into swtiching to 44's and shooting for around the 90-94 inch wb mark but want to keep my tub somewhat intacted.
psf4x4 10-23-2002, 04:40 AM try searching the board for "extended wheelbase"
fawking "wheelers":flipoff2: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?s=&postid=420826
