Last weekend I snapped a short side front inner.
Gotta love them longfields.:D
Anyway, a few questions:
Do I need to run the clip inside the birfield with a detroit? Will I have to do a Martack if I don't?
Second, does anyone have input on chromoly axles? Are they worth the money? If so, what will be the next weak link? Where would be the best/ cheapest place to find them?
Lastly, I posted in the wanted section for either just the short side, and / or a set of both stock fine spline fronts. As I would like to have spares no matter what I decide to do.
Thanks, Brian

After doing a better search, it seems the concesus is for stock inners. Mine broke in the standard spot.
Any more info than what's posted?

I wound up buying a pair of axles just to get the inner shafts...
CV Unlimited does sell the 4340 Cromo shafts, $250/pr.
I don't know where the weak link will be with those... I'd imagine turned, it would be the longfield.. and straight... longfield or R&P/locker (yikes!)

One more question.
Has anyone broken a long side with a superbirf?
Or is it almost always the short side?

Yep, 2 long sides and 7 short sides. 2 Inner cages on the superbirfs too. Those are MY fault, if I would (hahahaha) retained the stock steering stops they wouldn't have broken. What fun is that?
Then I cut the bulk of the tub off and haven't broken any thing in the front axles since. Some of the breakage was with 38" swampers, and 37" mtr's, the balance in comps with 35" bfg's.
I spent good money on a set of Dutchman inners, 4340 chromemoly that also broke. One of the long sides I counted was a Dutchman, stick with stock, at least thats my plan for now. The stock material is good stuff and they have some torsional twist which the moly axles don't.
I have collected a small cache of spare inners, get them from the guys that are parting out the drum brake fronts. The inners are the same. Prices ranged from $10 to $40 each depending on the sellers indiscriminent pride and the buyers varied levels of urgency!
I also modded the hubs with studs to speed up repairs, and removed the disk dust cover and outer seal (bolt on ring that seals against the outer hub surface).

Not an issue to me.. :flipoff2: My weak link would probably be the u-joints then, if the R&P is strong enough...
