: Shock tuning with Down South Motorsports

My last tuning session was cut short after breaking a sway bar arm. I made a ton of valving changes including going from coil carriers all around to adding valving and reservoirs in all the coilovers.

Sonny from Down South Motorsports has been fricken awesome. He has probably gone through my shocks 8-10 times rebuilt, revalved, and has been out to the desert with me several times. The car is probably 85-90% right now...We called it good at 11am on Saturday

More uptravel...I raised up the front a bit but really wish I could get another 2" of shaft showing at ride hight. I currently have around 11" uptravel in the back...really wish it was 14" up, but nothing I can do about it given the current setup...would have to cut the back of the car off to get another couple inches.

We are all trying to get more from our cars and while we may be limited by a solid front axle, Sonny has spent a ton of time researching and playing with different valving ideas. He know his stuff and knows how to tune these cars. He is also very reasonable.

looks a little loose....Is it in 4 wheel drive?

Nice video though!!

2wd

It could use a slightly stiffer sway bar in the rear, but its totally manageable. Currently has a rock equipment bar...will order a bigger bar from Dean at kickass sometime soon

Thoose guys are pretty cool, ive bought shocks and had some re valved there, to bad they changed locations, now they are a bit far from me, but still sticking with them.

I don't normally comment in shock tuning threads, because, well, it's kinda like discussing religion.

But you can get that car alot better than it is, in my opinion... the front does not rebound fast enough, and the rear does some weird things it's hard to eplain in text.

The car does look fast where it is, But I am sure it has alot more potential without adding more up travel from it's current height.

Again, my personal opinion.

I was running my buggy at 20 1/2" of belly with about 10" up front and rear. It was working really well in the whoops, but you had to be careful in turns and the COG felt a little high. It made the car hard to control at times. I lowered it 2 1/2" and the handling was significantly better. I'm going to do whatever I can to tune the shocks at that height even if I have to sacrifice the ride a little. It looks like you're sitting fairly high so it might be something to take in to consideration.

Looks like the rear is doing most of the work but that may be by design since you have more travel there. You can definately even it out so the front is helping more, but tuning is really left up to the driver. Looked like a great place to do shock testing!

I like the way it works. I have mine set-up similarly. It's really easy to drive when the rear is doing the majority of the work. It is less likely to do a ass over tea-kettle that way:D

Good job and way to be ahead of the last minute KOH tuning!

I think just the fact that you can drive that thing at speed in 2wd says a lot! Car is lookin sick dude, but why 2wd? I'm guessing you were doin about 60 in the section next to the road?

Those jumps looked fun:D

valving looks good. Sonny is a great guy to work with. doesnt look loose to me, i would say it looks like it has too much spring in it, but there are a ton of a way to go about working with the car, and like was stated, eveyrone has their guy and their way of doing it. so if you feel it is 90% i would stick with what makes you happy!

2wd feels much better to me. Yes it makes the car a bit looser, but it allows the front end to sit up instead of always wanting to pull. It also makes it much more stable through the turns as I can slide the car. I think that is why it looks like the front isn't doing that much work...btw I did soften up the front a couple turns after those runs. The problem I have now is that I am really only using 2 out of 3 compression tubes. The piston is living in the two top short compression tubes on the shock so its not really using its full potential.

I am by no means done with tuning, but am very happy with the fact that I can comfortable run down the road at plaster city doing 65+mph...its a good start.

Anyone else have video shot from a moving car? would really like to see other suspensions work

i would say it looks like it has too much spring in it!

I would agree, too much spring in the rear. Before re-springing, try taking some preload out of the rear and check where the dual rate crosses over, and it should settle in better. It is too tail happy right now.

preload is good when done properly, losing preload doesnt increase the spring rate, but depending on how it is set up, it means your working with the wrong spring rate. and yes, the 2ndaries should be screwed up out of the wya, there is no way that thing needs to hit the 2ndary nuts at all in the travel.
