: Canadians, screwed at border buying JD-2 bender?
Slowzuki 10-21-2002, 07:50 PM Ok, myself and the boys need a bender. JD-2 makes a nice model 3 as we all know. (If my dollar was worth anything a model 4 would be my only choice)
We are in Canada, they are in US, anyone have experience shipping something from JD-2?
I got screwed from UPS on a driveshaft off ebay, 65$ us won the auction, another 65$ us got it to my door. I only live an hour from Maine but the border guys and brokerage people always want a piece of the action!
I checked out this thread, and got no help.

Other people tell me if the company fills out the brokerage forms and says made in USA blah blah free trade then there is no duty?
Anyone want to jump in here?

Sharp 10-21-2002, 09:32 PM BTT, i want one of these benders too, what does it take to get it up here!!
if your near the border have it shipped to a place like mailboxes etc. or any retail mail box place and drive down your self this is what I normally do. Saves a lot of $$$$ and time. Shipping cheaper and gets there quicker. No other way to do it cheap .
WOLF359 10-21-2002, 11:15 PM i had my Pro-tools 105 shipped to my work. Can't remember the shipping, but it was reasonable. I used our UPS number and reimbursed my company.

Paul Gagnon 10-21-2002, 11:20 PM UPS is very expensive for brokerage fees so if you use another customs broker you can save some money. Make sure that you give clear instructions to whoever is shipping your goods. If there are multiple boxes make shure that they only use one customs form otherwise you will have to pay brokerage on each box. If something is made in the USA you may not have to pay duty but you will have to pay GST and PST on the value of the item in Canadian dollars. You also want to make it very clear to the person shipping you the item that they do not over estimate the value of the item for insurance purposes or you will pay more tax than you should have.
Depdog 10-22-2002, 05:57 AM Dont know if it will work on tools or not, but on R/C stuff, guy was buying. He had it marked USED R/C Parts and GIFT. Said it saved him TONS on shipping. You might check into it.

Slowzuki 10-22-2002, 06:12 AM Thanks for the tips, I'll try some of them in December when we buy the bender and a couple of dies.

patooyee 10-22-2002, 06:13 AM Would a US PO Box work?
J. J.
Slowzuki 10-22-2002, 06:28 AM You mean get a PO box in the states and drive over to pick it up? I check that out too, I wonder if parcels can be delivered to it.
Ken
jriggs 10-22-2002, 06:57 AM UPS will let you pick up packages at their hubs.....all you have to do is notify them that you are going to pick it up at a certain dispatch center and they'll let you swing by and pick it up.......Fed Ex is even better about doing this......they'll hold it for you at a certain place if you ask! somebody mentioned mailboxes etc., that's another good way to pick something up. i hope this helps! later, riggs
jriggs 10-22-2002, 06:58 AM just to make a note to the above post...UPS and Fed EX will NOT deliver to a PO BOX.....they need a signature from the recieving person......so don't go the PO box route.....it won't work.
morpheus 10-22-2002, 07:25 AM use UPS and notify UPS that you're going to just pick it up at the terminal. I live out a ways and don't like them leaving package$ on my doorstep so I just pick them up on my way home from work.

I don't think the issue is delivery. I think it is duty brokerage and taxes.
Where in New Brunswick are you? Do you have any relatives in Maine that you could ship it to?
T1H5_TA3 10-22-2002, 12:29 PM lol.. i ship to canada all the time..
i get guys calling wanting to know why we charged so much for shiping, it usualy takes anout 10 min worth of explaning to them before they understand that it is there government screwing them, not ours.
some of our customers get away with diving it back across with them, or they have it shiped up and we put antique auto parts on the shipping forms. some times it helps, some times it doesnt, seems like it depends mor on the broker's attitude than anything else.
Cutch 10-24-2002, 08:43 AM I do this all the time.
I live about 35 minutes from the US Border and there is a store there that accepts deliveries for $2 US fee per item. So someone there can sign for the package. They do not accept COD.
If the item is made in the USA there will be no duty.
If you pick up the item there is no brokers fee. This alone can be a big savings.
When I pick up the item I save two shipping zones...1 for the item to clear customs in Winnipeg and... 2 having it shipped to my home town of Thunder Bay.
When bringing the item across the border the only fee you will have to pay is GST and PST.
It's the brokers fee that UPS charges that kills you.
Root Moose 10-24-2002, 09:44 AM Ken, what I do is get the shipment sent to Mail Boxes etc. in Ogdensburg, NY and then drive down to pick up.
You don't need a formal mailbox at MBE, but call them first before using them as a destination. Can't remember what they charge for handling, something like $5-$6 USD.
If at all possible, get the vendor to use plain old USPS - cheap! You really don't need the stuff over night do you?

BootsntheJeep 10-24-2002, 09:58 AM Yeah, that's your good Canadian government putting the shaft to you. I work for Customs on the Maine/NB border, and one thing I've learned is that NAFTA only seems to apply to the US, Canada isn't about to let ANYTHING come into their country for free...
Bringing stuff from Canada into the U.S. is easy. By Trade Nafta, if it was made in North America, then there's no duty, no questions asked. If its like junkyard parts or something like that, if its valued at more than $2000, then it has to go thru a Custom's broker and pay the appropriate fees. If its for commercial purposes (like you're gonna use the bender in your shop) you'd have to pay a $5 user fee. But under $2000 is a personal entry.
So goods flood across the border from Canada, ESPECIALLY pulp wood. You'd think we couldn't grow trees in this country.
But you walk on the OTHER side of the building, and there isn't JACK going into Canada. Because by virtue of Trade Nafta, Canada agreed to not levy any duty on anything, but they never said they wouldn't tax the DOGSHIT out of it. (And you Canadian citizens, and damn fine people you all are, know too damn well about Canadian government and their taxes.)
So I can only speak from experience about stuff FROM Canada coming INTO the US, we know nothing of what Canada requires to take it into their fine country. But that's the score.
If anyone has any specific questions, I can get some phone number for you to call to speak to U.S Customs and Canada Customs.
And just so you know, in most cases, its NOT WORTH fudging on the paperwork or trying to sneak stuff by without declaring it. Trust me, the penalties are far worse than you might expect...
