I'll post up my new ride in a few. I'm excited that I'm back in a van, a 4x4 van to be exact! The interior is pretty set up but I'm not sure if it will suit my needs.

Be back in a few...

As smart as it would be to buy an F250 so I can haul shit, I want a Powerstroke van because they're the shit! And not bad to post up in and stay out of the wind at night.

While not mine, I drool every time I see one of these running around. A natural gas company drilling around here has a whole fleet of these running around. They seem to get used, as this was the first one I have seen that was relatively clean.

Okay! What size tires/rims? Who made the bumpers? We need to see the inside!

:smokin::smokin::smokin:

The van is a 2004 E350 EB Sportsmobile EB-50 6.0L diesel.
Tires are 315/75/16 on AR 16x8's. I need to switch out those BFG's with a "E" rated tire. They are just too squishy for my taste.
The front bumper is a Trailready for an F series truck. The rear bumper is an Aluminess tire carrier and rear basket that carries 4 (5 gal.) jerry cans.
I don't have pics of the interior right now but it has the following:
sink
microwave
4 cu ft fridge
2000watt inverter
16 gal. water tank
7 gal. grey water tank
Suburban furnace
6 gal. water heater
porta potti
exterior shower (awesome!!)

The running gear is all SMB:
Dyantrac D60
4:10's
Atlas II transfer case

Fuel tank is 47 gallons
We love it and have spent 75 nights in it in the last 16 months.

I've always thought one of these vans would be bad ass to have, but had never seen one up close, until a few weeks ago. A guy had a Quigley van at a flooring shop across the way from where I was, so I stopped in and looked at it. Now I want to build one. Too bad they don't put sliding doors on both sides, but I bet you could make double doors on both sides work...
My only concern is, wouldn't it be really top heavy?

Nike has a nice wrapped one that is lifted with front and rear bumpers that they use at promotional events like track meets, it pulls a matching enclosed utility trailer.

http://www.sportsmobile.com/3_commercial.html there are pictures of a black on on this page, i think it is probably the same van with a different wrap on it.

Just getting started on mine. It's an 84 with a 360/727. I'm replacing the 727 with a NP235 backed by a 435/205 combo. Im also replacing the stock dana 60 with a wider one from a motorhome. Tires and wheels are 24 bolt H1's. Will have hydrolic winches front and rear as well as on board air and water. I am going to have a permanant queen size bed in back and fixed seating for seven. The roof rack will ultimately have at least one if not 2 RTT's for the kids. Already have the custom black/green paint mixed up and ready. Eventually I would like to step up to a Dana 70/80 combo but for now I am using what I've got.

While not mine, I drool every time I see one of these running around. A natural gas company drilling around here has a whole fleet of these running around. They seem to get used, as this was the first one I have seen that was relatively clean.

Pretty sure Superior is a well services company owned by Nabors and not a drilling company at all. I'm just sayin:flipoff2:

winner.

had a brand new GMC savannah in our shop today actually, pretty clean job on the conversion. used a late model ford super duty front axle, radius arms, springs, shocks and all the related frame bracketry. looked 100% factory GM, aside from the FORD printing on the lockouts:laughing:. only downside was needing wheel spacers to convert the rear axle from 8x6.5" to 8x170mm. it made the rear about an inch wider on either side than the front.

who does 4x4 conversions on late model gm vans? not brand new, but only a couple years old. I know Quiqley did some but only on new vans, and I'm not sure Sportsmobile does used vans or not.

Apparently the economy is bad enough that Quigley will convert used now as well.

My van was converted by Salem Kroger and I'm not sure if the axle came out of anything or was specially built for SK.

Thanks for the compliments! I'm getting bigger tires and new wheels next week. I'll post up some new pics then.

so heres a question for all you vanners...

how many of you have traction adders in the rear axle?
i'm gonna add some traction to my 2wd pre runner van and i'm kinda torn between a lock-rite (cheap, simple, and good traction) or a posi like a true trac (expensive, less effective off road). at least the van is long and heavy and should make the locker a lot less jerky than the detroit in my bronco.

i'm mostly concerned with behavior on ice/wet roads. i know how a locker handles, driven locked vehicles for most of my driving career. will a good posi be just as slip and slidey as a locker on icy roads?

i know some of these built vans have to have something in back. and don't tell me ARB cause i'm not interested :flipoff2:

I ran a 2wd locked van before the 4x4 van. Side hills with a locker on slick surfaces are not fun (well, fun until you hit something). With the locker, even wet grass on a side hill was bad. Ice etc will be even worse. It worked great on the Sand/Rocks though (no low range meant no finesse).

The extra length/weight etc of the Van did make its road manners much nicer than it is on our Explorer. There was much less locker wiggle.

We were running a lockright in a 9" but a selectable would have been much nicer (just wasn't in our price range)

It is a very well thought out kit. It was easy to install. It took my friend(who did my welding and cutting with plasma) and i maybe 17 hrs all together. Everything went easy and there where no surprises. Theres a lil more bumpsteer than I like but its liveable. LOL, excellent. I thought I had heard rumors about the 6.0's being cooled...

So can you FIT an intercooler on the 7.3's?

It has been awhile since I have looked at the 2 side to side, and I would do a bunch of measurements first, but I would guess the 6.0 intercooler would fit as long as you used the radiator, intercooler, trans cooler, pretty much the whole header panel from the fenders forward. The radiator is a little thinner and taller to help fit the intercooler, and the intercooler is very closely packed in to get the hood to close.

If you are going to get that involved, I would almost look into swapping the entire 2009+ front on it. Our 6.0s always ran hot, to the point of baking the chrome off of the plastic grill and melting the glue holding the emblems to the fenders. The 09s have a much bigger grill opening and better air flow through the bumper. It moderately helped our beleaguered 6.0s, so i would guess it would be a huge improvement for a 7.3.

Either way you are going to have a very fun and interesting time getting the intercooler piping to work on the 7.3, the 6.0 has some funky cast pieces because there is no way to get a regular hose back there, then a little piece of hose going to the intercooler. It is tight in there with the 7.3. To make things worse, your fuel filter sits right in the valley of the motor, and it would suck to have to take the IC piping off just to replace the fuel filter.

Stay as far away from a 6.0 van as you possibly can.

Really.

It makes a 6.0 pickup truck look about as reliable as gravity.

It is a classic 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag scenario. Ford has not re-engineered the van at all since it came out in its relatively modern from in 1992, and it has gone from the 7.3 IDI - 7.3 Powerstroke - 6.0 Shitstain with no real changes in the body. The problem is the diesels have gotten more powerful, and physically larger with the 6.0. So they keep jamming them in there.

The 7.3 was never that bad, but the 6.0 is just too big and not enough air gets around the motor. At its horsepower rating they can just not get enough air in there to cool it. It has a lower output than the trucks, so head gasket issues are relatively rare. It has other, much worse issues.

It likes to eat EGR valves and injectors, but those are fairly common 6.0 things.

The temperatures get so hot for so long the wiring harness melts or the connectors fail. I have seen 4 or 5 get complete engine wiring harnesses in under 50k miles. Unacceptable.

The intercooler boots get hot and soft and they pop off no matter how tight you get them.

The oil gets hot and looses its lubricity, wearing out the high pressure oil pump. We resorted to changing the oil every 3k miles, which helped, but it still sucks. Under good circumstances you would get a no start hot until the oil cooled down, then the thicker oil would get enough pressure in the HPOP to fire off an injector, in bad cases they would not start until the HPOP was replaced.

Our fleet of 6.0s were SO horrible we had to keep 4 of our old 7.3s 100k extra miles just so we could have something on the road, and we eventually went to Chebby Duramaxs and Freightliner M2s to give the tow truck drivers a break.

There might be 6 more inches in between the header and the grill because of how the clip is mounted, but the fenders are the same general length. The hood is cut up and has an upwards contour to it like a backwards cowl induction hood.

Basically, the room behind the radiator is the same, but there is much more to play with in front of the rad. If you had a chance of mounting an intercooler, the 09 front is the one to work with.

A bunch of people claim they have THE ANSWER to 6.0 problems, but there are still big problems with the motors. There is some stuff that seems to work OK in the pickup truck, but the poor motor is SO shoehorned into the chassis I cant imagine much helping.

The 6.0s were so bad a bunch of ambulance operators, probably the biggest buyers of Ford diesel van chassis, sued Ford in a class action lawsuit due to excessive downtime.

FWIW, I have an 04 6 liter E350 and it has been very reliable so far. I don't drive it, or idle it like an ambulance though.
I have also added functional fender vents to help dissipate some of the heat buildup at low speeds.

I still need to lift the back because it rubs. My driver side rear leaf spring pack has a broken leaf. I'm putting Excursion leaf springs in the van. The van leafs are shorter so I'll use the van main leaf and the Excursion pack.

complete fiberglass front clip like an MDT would allow for more room in the older vans. If a 7.3 fit, surely a 6L or 6.4 would fit, no?

would take some re-engineering for things that used to mount on the fenders, new core support, etc., but should not be too hard for some of the bad ass fabricators on here.

On the ford vans, could I assume you guys are using the stock radius arm brackets and coil buckets on the van. Then using a bronco or truck axle, then fabbing up the panhard bracket??
Plus I was wondering about trans-and case options for the 7.4 turbo diesel. 4x4 vans kick ass

Thanks man it was fun while it lasted

Why scraping the van?

california smog got in the way, its a 1976 and thanks to the governator they changed the rolling smog year it was cut off at 1975 so i was screwed.....plus it had a 50 gallon tank and ran on 91 octane when gas was 4.77 gallon for premium and i couldnt afford it or sell it..... so it got torn apart and i guess its has been recycled :D

most people use a leaf spring setup. its arguably easier from what i've seen, but either could be accomplished pretty easily. most people use a D60 which is already setup for leaf springs. a lot of the newer stuff uses super duty components grafted onto the van frame. they have been done lots of different ways over the years. i've even heard of vans with the twin traction beam grafted on, though i've yet to see any good photos of how it was done.

trans/case options are plenty, anything from a f250/350 4x4 would work, just need to make driveshafts to the proper length.

from the reading and measurements i've done, its usually necessary to cut off part of the front of the long gas tank on the drivers side (on some this is the only; on older ones, its one of two tanks) to clear the transfer case.

Can you measure the width of the fender by the lower part of the door..Im really needing those fenders for my g ride van..Either my skinny ass is getting fatter or my springs have settled more, but my 285/40-24s rub when i am at full lock now..Since i will probably run a 33" tire when i put the 60 under it the fenders would make sense to buy now..Just dont wanna fawk em up by the tire hitting them.

I can't right now but these guys made them and should have all that info handy. http://www.glassworksunlimited.com/foecvanfrfe.html

If for some reason they don't have it, let me know and I'll measure mine when I get home.

there 3 inch rise and 3 inch flare , so subtract 3 inches from the factory fender at the point you wanted chris to measure and it should be pretty close to the answer your looking for .

I've never put fiberglass fenders on anything before so they were the hardest and the easiest at the same time. :D

I had to remove some material but I could have had it done in a day. Someone (like Bryan :flipoff2:) who is used to fixing fiberglass on racecars all the time could probably do it in half the time.

Interesting build. My only comment would be to stow the front tow rings behind the bumper as intended, otherwise you can bend them and the bumper if you bump something.

I have a one week old newborn that just came into our lives, so that's cramping my Samurai build productivity. Regardless, almost done with the endless sanding, need to mount the rear door, then hinge the pop top. Hoping to paint it by the end of the month. After that it will get a 2-3" lift and some new gears.

I thought I had mine posted in here, guess not. This is the current state of my van project. D60 up front (ARB), Radius arms with King's, Duramax, NP205 divorced, D70S rear (open, ugh), Alcan springs, Bilstein 7100's in the rear + steering stabilizer, custom rear bumper, fuel tank, and 4" straight through exhaust, EFI Live. Runs and drives very well. Still a ways to go (interior is a big portion), but very usable for camping right now. Since there isn't much for a sense of size in the pics, I can say that the bottom of the windshield is above my shoulder, and I stand just over 6'2".

Thanks.

As for the Bilstein, I like them a lot. They do the job, reasonably priced, and are easy to take apart/revalve/etc if needed (I took them apart to shorten the remote res hoses initially). They ride nice, but might be just slightly too soft when I'm loaded down. Excellent when empty. The damping might be perfect when I put airbags on (not sure if airbags provide any damping), so I'm not going mess with them right now.

As for the steering stabilizer, I drove for about 2 months before adding one (never had an issue without one). I mounted mine high, up out of the way. Since I didn't really need one, I can't say much about it (although it does seem like a good idea regardless).

We had a great time in Baja. We drove about 100 miles on the Baja 1000 race course (dirt/sand) right along the Pacific Ocean, then cut over to the Sea of Cortez and drove south quite a ways, almost reaching Loreto. The farthest south we went was about 650 miles from the border. I think we did about 1500 miles total while in Mexico.

This is the kind of trip the van was built for!
