: 80/800 top on scout II?
MKBruin 10-21-2002, 08:26 PM ok, next summer I plan on bobing my scout (if I still have it then)
BUT, being really damned cold here with snow and all...I need some form of top for the winter...hard or soft. has anyone put an 80/800 top onto a bobbed sII?
JoshC 10-21-2002, 08:33 PM Uh, you mean you can bobb a Scout tub but you have no idea how to bobb the easiest part? :flipoff2:
On my '76 Travler we just cut the down bars off the top, clamped it to the windshield, and used some long muffler clamps on the cage. It looks cheesy but my bodys so beat up it wouldn't line up anymore.

how true is a Scout top
could you cut say 9" out of the middle and would the two halvs mate up nicly wor welding
uglyscout 10-22-2002, 04:49 AM A scout II top narrows as it goes back there is a 3" difference in width from the front to back - I tried making a half cab out of mine top and it wasn't even close to lining up when I pushed the two halves back together. It is not an easy cut and weld operation. But if your just looking to keep the cold air out it could be done but it might not be a show winner. :D
The curvature of the top also changes as it goes back - it seems to flatten out - leaves another gap.... You can clearly see both gaps in my top. I plan to weld a patch into the width gap and just pound down and weld the curvature gap. Not pretty but then it will match :p

MKBruin 10-22-2002, 05:36 AM I was also concerned about cutting the side glass...I was unaware of teh problems with curvature.....thanks for teh picture and teh warning.
choping and welding up the body is not a problem...glass is. plus I am looking for quick and easy. If a 80/800 top is the same around the doors, teh same width, I can shorten my sII to that length.......either that or has anyone priced a custom soft top before?
uglyscout 10-22-2002, 06:15 AM I thought about shortening my SII top by 9-10" as well and decided I could shorten the windows pretty easy - I "had" sliding side windows and thought I could just take them out - cut the aluminum frame down where it is flat on both side - cut the rear piece of glass an equal amount (or have a glass shop make the cut) and fit it all back together. With the sliding window I think you have a lot more room for error in you glass cuts.
As for a 80/800 top - no clue but I don't think they are that close to the same as SII tops. Do an internet search on 80/800 and start looking at tops. I do know that an 80 top wont fit an 800 they are different - and at some point they had sliding windows that where a funky shape...
Custom tops - start thinking in the $600+ range at a minimum. A custom soft top is over $600... DANG!!
Mechanos 10-22-2002, 06:36 AM Those side glass panels are more than likely tempered safety glass. If you try to cut them, you will just end up with a hundreds of little glass cubes. Kinda looks like rock salt.

??? I bought some parts from a dude who shortened a Traveler top and he had the glass cut with no problems.???
T1H5_TA3 10-22-2002, 08:38 AM why not use lexan ?

Wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.... and I'm sure it wouldn't the last either. :D
PITDOG 10-22-2002, 04:19 PM Just get a half top and be done with it. Then you can also remove/install it yourself with no problems.
Sully 10-22-2002, 04:56 PM I don't think the 80/800 top is even remotely close in dimensions. I agree with Pitdog, if you are going to bob it, and need a hard top for the winter, just get a half top, or a tera-top.

The Tera top will give you a little more room behind the front seats than the earlier half top will.
