hey guys, i took off the iginition switch behind the dash on my 85 cj7 to replace it. well my jeep doesnt need a key to start now, then the switch went bad so thats why i am replacing it. the thing is i am replacing it with a differant switch. i need to know what the wires going to the original switch were. there were two plugs in it, a clear one with 4 wires and a balck one with 2 wires. the clear one had the following wires, Red with white stripe, Red, yellow, blue. the black connector had the following. Red with white stripe, and black. now the switch i purchased is a generic switch. it is the whole unit key and wiring, unlike the jeep with the two differant units. my new one has the following connections on the back. Bat. Ign. ACC. St. does anyone know how to hook it up. i appreciate all your time and help, thanks, scott

Buy a Chilton's repair manual for a CJ and read the wiring schematics. The steering column wirering is the same for the '78-'86.

You could just order the correct CJ switch for $8 from www.quadratec.com, disassemble the steering column and not mess with the wiring.
