I am looking for a divorced case and found one at the junker. All they know is it is in a 84 Chevy truck. What would I be getting if I bought it? Is it a 203 or 205 or maybe even a 208. What are the good and bad of each? I know 203 is full time but what about the other 2?

Thanks Todd

Chevy quit using divorced mounted transfer cases in the late sixties, so this alledged 1984 Chevy pickup with a divorced transfer case is most likely a converted 2wd or some other abortion, so there is no way of knowing what case was used. Ford and Dodge both used divorced NP205's and NP203's, or it could be an older Rockwell case, or even a Nissian divorced case, take a picture, or describe it.

Maybe they meant in the BACK of an 84 Chevy truck. 205 is gear driven, has a cast iron case, and a low range of 1.94. 208 is chain driven, aluminum case, and has a low of 2.40 or something like that. Of course, correct me on the 208 because I am not sure.

Pretty close. The 208s have a low of 2.61. 205s are solid. 208s have a decent low gear but are known for wearing range forks often and having the chain snap, cracking aluminum case in the process.

dude i can't tell u the years divorced cases came in.. but it wasn't that recently..

np205's.. bombproof and you won't break it.. came in 1 ton chevys and fords for years.. also came in lesser models.. easy to spot by the 3 bolt idler shaft cover on the rear between the rear output and large bolt on cover.. can be twin sticked easily... different input gears on the chevy 205's and there's the divorced model.. all ford 205 inputs are 31 spline female..

np203's.. junk unless you're just using the geared reduction housing for a doubler setup..
