: My Scout 800 Build
264Charlie 07-01-2010, 08:33 PM Hello Guys,
Just purchased my first Scout, a 1971 800. I am having a buddy trailer it up to my parent's house so I can work on it in my dad's shop. I suspect it is going to take some time to finish. The shop will be a nice home out of the elements.
I must have deleted most of the original pictures I had taken. The only one I still have this one.
http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz192/croberts1981/Scoutinside.jpg
I will add more pics along the way.
I'm not one for nostalgia but like the looks and size of the Scout 800. Outside of that many of the parts will be swapped for modern bits that are easier to find and work on (for me). I am a form follows function guy so you will not see lots of shinny chrome and flashy doodads.
My first decision is on the engine and transmission. Currently deciding on the exact details but will order a Chevy LQ4 6.0L or LM6 5.3L and NV4500, TCI T700R or 4L80E tomorrow. What ever transmission I choose it will end up with an Atlas behind.
First things first but lots to come in the future.

budget76 07-01-2010, 08:45 PM From your plans I think you'll fit in, just don't get all butthurt like most of the newbs:flipoff2: Looking forward to seeing some real progress, not just plans
264Charlie 07-01-2010, 09:12 PM I am looking forward to more progress too. I don't get offended and understand 1,000s of guys asking the same silly questions. I am a founder of www.caprc.com and still get some of the calguns guys posting some crazy items from time to time.
264Charlie 07-02-2010, 09:48 AM All loaded up and heading to my parents today...

264Charlie 07-02-2010, 11:46 AM My Brother keeps telling me that.
uglyscout 07-02-2010, 12:38 PM My Brother keeps telling me that.
Your brother is smart -- Your build sounds great, but it sure a lot more fun to get out and wheel it before you tear it all apart for a year or more of building.
budget76 07-02-2010, 05:55 PM I agree with the above. Make it safe and wheel the piss outta it. I had the same tires on dad's yota, they aren't that bad offroad. Tear it apart in the winter
264Charlie 07-03-2010, 12:17 AM After tons of reading and talking to some friends it looks like I will be scraping the NV4500, TCI T700R and 4L80E ideas.
BeefCakeScout 07-03-2010, 08:56 AM with all the money and time you are putting into that beast......why 35"s?
264Charlie 07-03-2010, 11:45 AM I don't see the need for anything larger than 35's. The goal of the build is a truck that could be driven everyday and still have fun on the trail.
Time to start looking for a hard top too...
niconine 07-03-2010, 02:53 PM i agree put a roll cage and cut the fender out and ull be good to go. and im pretty sure that once you get those 35" you are gonna want bigger tires for more clearance when you air down. just a thought though lol. might as well put 40"s and call it a day lol. but what do i know im just some random guy that has 35"s lol
fullthrottle(tm sct) 07-03-2010, 02:57 PM I have one here in Michigan with all the glass in good shape, that I'm not using. Sorry I'm so far away! lol nice scout.
264Charlie 07-03-2010, 03:49 PM The current suspension setup is a hack job... It going to take a bit of work just to get that repaired. Rather than deal with fixing it am I just going to build link suspension.
The hardest part of the build is just picking a direction to go. I want to get the engine ordered on Tuesday so I still have a few days to choose.
GEN III/IV 5.3 or 6.0 maybe with a aluminum block. As for the trans it will be a ZF S6 650 or Muncie SM465 with a doubler or splitter. Both units will have a atlas behind them.
it's most likely better to find a top locally and not pay shipping. Well at least I hope I can.
ChiScouter 07-04-2010, 08:39 AM All these engine and wacky transmission options you are throwing about makes me suspect that you are pretty clueless and this will end up as yet another newbie passing through talking a lot of smack, killing a few kittens, and then buying a new ipod or something never to be heard from again.
Brandon 07-04-2010, 10:00 AM agreed, order an engine? Really, on a scout?
264Charlie 07-04-2010, 12:50 PM Not sure how a Chevy small block with a Chevy trans and Atlas is an odd combo... I don't want to get into bickering in the thread. I am just posting my thoughts as I go.
Ideas and concerns would be useful, pointless criticism is not.
ChiScouter 07-05-2010, 07:07 PM Ideas and concerns would be useful, pointless criticism is not.
Sorry, but you don't get to tell us what we can post in your thread:laughing:
Your transmission choices sound like you paged through a copy of Four Wheeler or Off Road magazine and posted up whatever sounded cool to you as you were looking at all the shiny trucks. Did you give one second of brain wave activity thinking about the physical size, electronic interface, or gear ratios or those transmissions? Why in the hell would you need a splitter or doubler if you are buying an Atlas?
How about telling us all the pros and cons of all the engine and transmission choices you have mentioned? I don't think you have a clue right now, but maybe you will do some research and come back with more than some big ideas that you got from watching some tv show or reading a magazine
That Scout buildup show by Ian has brought more nitwits around here than anything else:shaking:

The current suspension setup is a hack job....
You say the current setup is a hack job (and it probably is) but do you even know what you have under there now? Judging by your posts I would think you don't know what any of these parts are so maybe you should spend some time and use what you have. Make sure it's safe and as it shits parts you can learn along the way.:smokin:

Time to start looking for a hard top too...
I have a hard top 40 min north of Sacramento with all the glass, needs new seals and shit, but it is sound if you want pics.
264Charlie 07-06-2010, 01:35 AM I am aware what’s under the Scout now, 345, Dana44, Dana30, with a Dana20 transfer case. The current springs have had leafs removed and are now flat with some blocks added to lift it back up. Additionally the U bolts are not correct for the axel and are bent to hell. I would not let my family ride in the Scout in its current shape.
I have two routes available put a new leaf springs suspension or use the opportunity to build a 4/3-link F&R. Rather than waste the money on a leaf spring setup I would want to replace in the future I have decided to build the link suspension.
This build is not going to be a strictly trail rig. It's going to be street driven and see trails on weekend outings and camping trips. I picked the Scout so I would not have to deal with smog and it’s different.
I rarely look at 4wheeler or other 4x4 magazine. All transmission choices are based on gearing, size, weight, and simplicity. Who is Ian and why do I care?
Now lets address my crazy engine choices (that yes I am going to “order” over a telephone).
The Chevy 5.3 LM7 weighs in around 530 lbs, and puts out down around 300HP/300 ft-lbs out of a reliable, readily available FI package. So the Chevy 5.3 is lighter, more reliable, cheaper and has better performance than the current motor in the Scout… What a dumb idea to swap it out.
Now that I have chosen a Chevy engine it’s a simple choice to attach a transmission that will bolt up with out much trouble.
As for the auto vs. manual decision… I prefer driving manual transmissions but my wife cannot drive a stick and I wanted her to drive too. She has expressed no interest in driving on the trail and stated she will learn to dive the stick around town. …and I am aware of the comp controlled 4L80E and don’t see what the issue is. Shift points can be addressed in the LS1 PCM or a stand alone trans controller. If you are afraid of computers ware you on this forum?
Now for the manual choices…
ZF S6 650
2100 – 4.11 = 72MPH
Pros:
6 Speed 5.79, 3.31, 2.1, 1.31, 1, 0.72,
Very strong
Smooth shifting
Cons:
Price
Size, at 30” it’s 3” longer than a NV4500 or 10” than a SM465 with bell housings.
Requires modification of the body's tunnel
Weight, at 230 lbs it sounds heavy but that is only 35 more lbs than a NV4500 with bell housing.
NV4500
2200 – 4.11 = 74 MPH
5speed: 5.6/6.3, 3.04, 1.67, 1, 074Pros:
Pros:
Smooth shifting
Strong HD transmission
A lot of support from the 4x4 community
Cons:
Heavy
Weaknesses in the transmission mainshaft clutch splines
Clutch linkages can also prove challenging
Requires modification of the body's tunnel
27” long
Oil sensitivity
NV3550
5speed 4.01, 2.33, 1.39, 1.00, 0.78
2250-4.11 = 72MPH
Pros:
Medium price
Medium Size
Lightweight
Smooth shifting
Cons:
Not rated for LM7 power
Small gear span
SM465
2250 – 3.31 = 70MPH
4Speed 6.55, 3.58, 1.57, 1
Pros:
Strong
Cheap
Easy rebuild
Small
Lightweight
Allows the option of a doubler/splitter if desired.
Cons:
Poor feel
Large steps in gearing
I don’t see choosing the 4500 or 3550 over the SM645 or similar 4speed simply because they have an extra gear. And the fact that they are OD gears does not sit well at all. (really not an OD fan).
Now the ZF would be really awesome trans, very street capable with plenty of gear selections for grades and driving around town. The size and cost of the unit are the serious drawbacks. The 465 is looking more and more like the best choice… I am not saying I have or will run a doubler on the 465 but of the trans listed it at least gives me the choice. I really like the idea of 2:1 and 4:1 Tcase in the rig.
I hope this help shed some light on my thinking. What would you guys run with a Chevy small block?
Brandon 07-06-2010, 06:08 AM show me the money :p
looking forward to the build..

So someone swapped in a 345?
I don't know what it originally came with, I don't have the line ticket. I read someplace that the 71 800s might have came with a 345 but have no clue. It does have a stock locker, not that I will be keeping.
264Charlie 07-09-2010, 11:15 PM Software key for SusProg3D arrived today... SusProg3d is a kinematic suspension design and analysis tool.
I am going to try and get the suspension mocked up in the next two weeks...

war pony 07-10-2010, 08:42 AM This looks like it's going to be a fun build , but why all the linky stuff for a grocery geter? Teach your wife how to drive a stick. She may need to drive in an emergency.
IDScout 07-12-2010, 07:49 PM ZF S6 650
Cons:
Requires modification of the body's tunnel
NV4500
Cons:
Requires modification of the body's tunnel
Those are not really cons if you are willing to do a 3 and 4 link IMO.
If it were my money, I would go with the 4500 and 241 with 4:1 kit and SYE.
I always hated autos for wheeling, but after spending time in the rocks, I am currently gathering parts for an auto swap. Or grow a third leg:shaking:
I hope we actually get to see this rig get completed. Sounds like fun!

Mostly doing the links for the project of doing it... I know she really needs to learn.

My 70 800A had a powr lok in the rear that worked really well. The 71 1110 Travelall I have now has the Trac Lock, and it doesn't seem much better than an open diff. The Travelall has the Powr Lok stickers inside the door, but the line setting ticket says TRAC-3.

264Charlie 09-17-2011, 01:45 PM Well, The company I worked for was acquired and I had to finish up a few projects but I am back working on the Scout now.

Don't see the need with 35's on this rig. I am trying to resist the urge to go crazy with it and end up a 6000lbs for a street/trail truck.
You can't see it in the pics I posted but we a installing a 60 and 14B in the Branco parked next to my rig.
I might build a buggy after this is done if I want to get serious on the rocks. First things first is to get this guy back on the street. ASAP.

264Charlie 09-23-2011, 09:05 PM I want to get it into the truck first, rebuild next year. My motor runs well and checked out OK.
I am heading up north for a Rifles Only training class this week. Next week I will start building nightly. Found a bellhousing on CL today.
264Charlie 09-23-2011, 09:20 PM I opened some boxes today, first impression of the 2.5" FOA coilovers are positive. Really glad they offered the billet upgrades to Pirate members. I went with 12" & 14" 2.5" with reservoirs.

I also order the brackets and joints for the front end last Monday. Will Ballistic every ship is the question of the day.
EZ wiring kit also arrived.
Time to get off my A$$ and go pick up all the steel for the cage, links and fab work. Should get that done next week.

264Charlie 10-11-2011, 12:16 PM I agree about Ballistic. I had already ordered rear parts from them and wanted the same ones in the front. I don't plan on ordering anything more from them.

264Charlie 10-13-2011, 10:26 PM Thanks man, I am looking forward to turning the parts into a truck.
264Charlie 10-14-2011, 05:10 PM Guys I would like your thoughts on the motor mounts. I am thinking about the following from Energy Suspension.
http://energysuspension.com/media2/LinkBusDia.gif
The mounts use a 2.5" .250 wall tubing and are 2" long. Figured I would but one on each side in about the stock locations.
I guess they are easy to replace if I need to go with something different.

Ask Dan for 2 sets of bushings & some tube, then weld them up.
Or make your own.

I am also looking for a top. If anyone in CA has one let me know.
war pony 10-20-2011, 06:59 PM If you want to come all the way up to Vacaville, I would sell mine.

I shoot in Sac all the time so that would work. I am heading out next week for a two week hunting trip in MT. I will connect up with when I return.

Good luck on the hunting trip. I could be tempted with some cash and elk meat :D
264Charlie 10-21-2011, 09:47 AM Next time I am up that way I will bring some meat by regardless.

I'll second this. Ruff Stuff sells them ready made for about what the materials would have cost me. I'm using them for my engine and transmission.

Went a different route, I will post some pics as a start welding them up. I think the guy in Ohio screwed me and is not going to send my bell-housing. Back on the hunt.
264Charlie 11-12-2011, 01:38 PM Back from my hunting trip. Dropped of the trans and some other parts at the ranch. My buddy's build going on next to the scout is moving along nicely. Check it out.

the4wheeler 11-14-2011, 12:05 PM finally found your build thread!
Will add free loading of the stock engine and trans for any one interested in in the old parts LOL
if you dont come up with a bell housing may be able to make up with a adapter plate on my work CNC ( dont know if you ever saw the test peace i made for Wes's motor ) would be similar to that.

That would be cool. Did you see the nice NV4500 in your barn?
If you make me a bell housing I will order your CNC parts.

HAHA heck ya there's no missing that beast!
I dont know about a full bell housing ( that would be a big chunk of aluminum ) but a GM bell housing with a adapter plate to the npr motor would be doable.
did a quick search rumored that some 4bds have the standard GM bolt pattern ....no adapter required! ill look at when i return home maybe you be lucky
264Charlie 12-09-2011, 01:42 PM I am taking up some more room now that Atlas box is huge. Got a new lead on a bell, I am hopeful we will have the motor in before the end of Jan.
war pony 12-09-2011, 03:40 PM What trans did you go with? I have been looking for a 4bd2 flywheel, and they are hard to find. Did you see the adapter Randy made for the Isuzu auto flywheel? That may be the way for me to go.

The Randy auto flywheel is sweet.
I ended up going with a NV4500 from High Impact, 5:1 Atlas and Tim's kit. All kinds of issues finding a bell. Looks like I found a guy and he should ship it Monday. A few weeks at Tim's and I should be ready to go.
264Charlie 12-20-2011, 10:47 AM Finally found a bellhouseing. It's on the way to Tim for machining.
264Charlie 01-16-2012, 11:37 PM Made a little bit of progress this weekend.
Test fit Atlas to trans. Found out I need a new seal
Installed 8.8 axel kit, Stripped tubes for new brackets
Removed all the factory Scout rear suspension bits.
