I've got a '74 FJ40 with a 2F. I'm in Yuma so at times I need to cover a lot of asphalt. I would like to put in a 5 speed for the overdrive but I'm currently "cost conscience". Anyhow, a friend of mine frequents Canada. Are there any H55F's to be had up there in junkyards that I can send him looking for? Are they in the diesels? Thanks....

Fuhgeddaboudit.
Just get some bigger tires. You live in Yuma and you haven't heard about "Mexican" overdrive?

How'd you know I was running around on 31s? A 2" lift and 33s are on the way, but when I do the math that's not much of a reduction in rpm.

canada + h55 = danger.
for the H55 conversion you also will need a t-case
IF, you get a HZJ or BJ H55 you have to tear down the t-case, then the tranny to replace the output ($250 part, have fun).
then ideally you may have to rebearing AND synchro the tranny and rebearing the t-case ($400+)
If you are luck enought to stumble on a HJ, it's a drop in but most have vacuum shift transfers
...all will have 1.99:1 t-cases
Call up Marv Specter with your credit card, buy a membership and then a H55 combo ($2,280 minus discount?).

Sounds like time for 35s.

Hey Rodeo, take the ferry from Seattle to Victoria BC, and come pickup my '83 BJ60 for the low-low price of $3500.US!!! Has what you're looking for, 5spd., solid running 3B diesel, and factory power steering. Even has factory cruiser control... COLD beer in the fridge;)
:D
Cheers!
I will have an H55F+tranfers case for sale in a couple months. I bought it from ManaFre 3 years ago. I have a in line but with this type of stuff people tend to flake out. I will be asking 1500 with adapter to a 350
