: Workdays!
Tinman 07-05-2010, 04:26 PM The Friends of Fordyce will be conducting two workdays before Sierra Trek.
The first will be July 17, 18. Meeting place will be Fordyce Lake at 9am on the 17th. The purpose will be to close off the old section of the Committee trail bypassed by our new trail. No conditions on the workday. We don't have to cross the river.
The second will be July 31, August 1. Meeting place will be approximately mile 6.5 at the mud hole area at 9am on the 31th. The purpose will be to close off and begin mitigation of the old section of trail.
This workday will be dependent on the height of the river. If it is too high it will be called off.
Please e-mail me to sign up for either or both workdays. If numbers warrant it we will provide a late lunch with sandwiches, salads and drinks. In any event, at least snacks and drinks will be provided.
Thanks!

sik4wheeler 07-05-2010, 05:49 PM Has anyone made it to the fordyce lake yet? Last weekend we were only able to get to the Y where the road splits fordyce/ lake sterling.
Tinman 07-06-2010, 10:13 AM Good question. THe snow up at the CC totally slipped my mind. I'll have to find out.
JDunn 07-06-2010, 12:16 PM Someone posted on my club board they went to Fordyce lake Saturday. They said water was not spilling over the spillway but was flowing fast out of the dam. I'll see if he went down to the committee crossing and how much snow there was in the area. It’s supposed to be hot over the next couple of weeks.

ToyFamily 07-06-2010, 12:48 PM Yes, several Webilt members went down to Fortyce Lake July 4th weekend. There was a little bit of snow in the shade area on the down hill side but no big deal.
The Lake is massively full -- I never seem it this full before. Water was gushing out of the lower dam pipe and some was trickling over the spill way.
As you go down the last hill towards the Lake there are some awesome waterfalls on the right side coming down the granite into the lake.
hauser rocs 07-06-2010, 04:50 PM I checked it out sat. some snow in trees going down hill from pge cabin. If the weather stays hot until workday there should be no problem getting down to river.
Not sure how we are going to work that, FOTR has a Tahoe side work day on the 17th, and the Girls run is the 31-1 - so Rick will be without a rig - cuz I'm taking it.:flipoff2:

You just need to start cuttin' on that Hummer so you don't have to borrow the old mans's rig.:smokin:

Thanks for all the updates.
Agreed on the waterfalls. I haven't seen them this year but was up there last year when they were flowing. The sound is amazing.
Murphster05 07-08-2010, 04:42 PM Wondering how these work days are? I was hoping to take a trip to Fordyce on the second weekend, flows permitting. Do you just do a day at one spot and go home or...?
If I make it up there that weekend and the flows permit a trip, I don't seem why I couldn't come and help out.
Tinman 07-08-2010, 09:49 PM For these days I think it'll be work and leave after although I will most likely be staying the night.
If we end up doing some work later in the year we'll do another dinner BBQ and encourage everyone to camp as we did last year.
Tinman 07-15-2010, 08:23 PM I'll be at Fordyce Lake 9am on Saturday. We have a few people showing up for this last minute workday. Hope to see more on the 31st. We'll have snacks and drinks for the volunteers this weekend. This weekend is to close off the old Committee trail and route everyone onto the new section.
River permitting, I plan on taking a run up to Meadow after the work and will most likely camp there. Anyone wanting to join me is welcome.
scottz 07-16-2010, 06:30 PM not sure if I'll be up there tonight or in the am but I'm planning on making it. So far it's just me right now.
scottz 07-17-2010, 10:21 PM great time, I had to stack rocks to get out though..
Tinman 07-18-2010, 02:32 PM Thanks to Scott, Bob, Dan, Eddie and Fred for coming out and helping to close off the old Committee trail. It was HOT but everyone worked hard. There is now only one trail from Fordyce Lake down to the River. We camped down by the river Saturday night and greeted a couple of rigs that came down after dark. Not knowing that the old trail was closed they were totally confused by the new trail but enjoyed it a bunch. Even thought the new trail has been there a while I am finding that many people didn't know it was there!

Tinman 07-18-2010, 02:57 PM Fordyce is full now but I hear there is more high release coming to drain the lake for more work.

Tinman 07-18-2010, 03:00 PM You'd never believe it but there is a Cummins Diesel in this Jeep and it looks like a factory option.

Tinman 07-27-2010, 02:04 PM Well because of the continued high water release we're going to (I hate doing this) cancel the July 31th workday. We can't responsibly lead a work party through the river right now.
That being said I am still planning on a run up the trail Saturday. I will most likely head in Indian Springs early and travel up to the mudhole area. If anyone wants to tag along I will more than welcome the company. Not an FOF run! I recommend only big tires and good waterproofing.
I'll be on channel 40 on the CB.
Tinman 07-27-2010, 02:35 PM We'll reschedule this workday for after the water release goes down. Sometime in late September.
robertd 07-27-2010, 07:31 PM Hey Bret,
When did you guys go in and close off the mud hole section of the road? I was there yesterday. The new bypass is nice and very well traveled. You guys did a great job!!!!
Tinman 07-27-2010, 09:03 PM Since the FOF is not going to able to do the job before Trek because of the river flows a couple of FOF volunteers that were going to be on the trail did a temporary bockade so the Trek trail runs will go the right way. We'll go back and do the complete job later after the release goes down.
scottz 08-03-2010, 11:24 PM right now I've got every weekend free till thanksgiving.
