I have a 1981 cj 5 and i bought a 1996 4.3 vortec out of a blazer. (auto) and i have read that i need to get a 153 tooth flywheel to put in it in to my stock tanny (and i know it wont hold up very long but no money) so can any one help maybe a part # or some thing that i could use.

Try an 86-up Camaro/Firebirds with the 5-speed for the 153-tooth. Trucks are 168 exclusively. It can be VERY hard to find a 153-tooth for a one-piece rear main seal engine. Might have to go to GM or aftermarket.

Sounds odd that you can only use one particular size flywheel

Your engine block will decide if you can use a 153 or 168 tooth starter. (Starter must match flywheel) Straight-across (parallel to back of block) bolts are for 153. Diagonal bolts are for 168.

It's been a while since I mix-matched clutch/flywheels but I thought the 11" GM clutch would fit either the 153 or 168 flywheel. The 12" will only fit the 168.

Does this mean I can't replace a 153 toother and starter with a 168 toother and starter?

You can - if your block is drilled for both patterns.

Some aftermarket mini-starters *may* work with either bolt pattern on either 153 or 168 tooth flywheels. Dunno for sure though...
