I have a 1981 cj 5 and i bought a 1996 4.3 vortec out of a blazer. (auto) and i have read that i need to get a 153 tooth flywheel to put in it in to my stock tanny (and i know it wont hold up very long but no money) so can any one help maybe a part # or some thing that i could use.

The tooth count is really on dependent on the starter & vice versa. Not sure why you'd need one for your tranny...?

Because there are 2 different sized bellhousings for chevy small blocks/4.3's

It's called a flexplate, and they are cheap new, but you normally find the smaller flexplate on cars - try the caprice or pontiac pariseanne

OK, that makes sense, but wouldn't the other choice be 148 teeth, which would be nominally smaller than what he has, and guaranteed to fit in the same housing as a 153 tooth? Not like we're talking clutch surface area or anything...

No, the other choice is 168 tooth, and you can't stick a 153 tooth flywheel where a 168 belongs.

Out of personal curiosity, what were the applications for a 168 tooth flywheel in a small block application? Even the larger truck clutch fits on the 153, IIRC. Why have two different size bellhousings, they both bolt to the same physical locations on the block, so the larger ones would have a longer rake?

Here's a basic SBC primer:
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/chevy_small_block_v8.htm

The 168-tooth car flywheels are drilled for 10-1/2" clutch. The 168-tooth truck and high performance car flywheels are drilled for 11" clutch.

The 153-tooth flywheels may be drilled for 8, 9, 9-1/2 or 10-1/2" clutches, depending on what engine they were originally used on.

Sadly, I have a SBC, but I don't remember what I have. :(

Thanks... :D

Almost all 4.3's with a manual tranny use the 153 tooth. Other applications are cars with 350's.
