snoop dogg 10-23-2002, 09:02 AM Hey, i pm'ed ya...but all i got was a quote of what i wrote to you. Well i have another question, i was SEARCHING around here, and i have seen all the Threads on Dodge front 60's and outboarding and all that good stuff, and saw pics of the way you outboarded the front spring hangers...but do you have pics of the rear spring hangers?. Well what did you do for your rear spring hangers? Did you use the stock ones and cut them off and mount them outside of the frame rails? Or did you just make completely new ones? If you have pics of it, i would greatly appreciate that...just lookin' for some ideas. Im sure they are better than mine:)
T1H5_TA3 10-23-2002, 09:55 AM im glad to see you looking for guidance.. but do you ever have any original thoughts? one of the reasons to run a " custom " rig is to be unique.. not to copy some one.. not that modifying some one else's idea is bad, but change things a bit. there are no rock solid rules to doing this.. take a look at a few ideas then go for it!
you have some guidelines to go by ie: the frame rails are x" apart, the housing is y" wide.. the spring is z" wide... take that information ang go with it.. no real need to outbord rear springs.. other than to make a rig more stable.. but an inch or so wont make a diferance that will be noticeable..
my 2 cents, put new spring pads on the housing and be done with it.
RustoleumWhite 10-23-2002, 10:11 AM I think that is the point he's missing Brian.
while fronts may require screwing with the springs to get things to line up, all because of the cast-in pearch in the pumpkin, rears are a free-for-all... unless you have a good reason to move them, just run with the springs were they are and move the pearches on the housing, you will most likely have to adjust them anyway for pinion angle and such, plus just about evey rig uses a different rear spring spaceing......
If anything I would INBOARD the rear springs, you will get more movement out of the same spring...
Harvester of Sorrow 10-23-2002, 10:38 AM Yeah....Inboard!!
If I where to do things over that is what I would do...When you look at the angles of articulation, the spring will move less, the more you move it to the center (diff). This will affect the amount of unsprung weight and such but of course you would figure it out...I would just move my current springs, because it would soften them up.
The closer you move them in, the more mechanical advantage the TIRE has over the spring. Stock or farther out, the more advantage the spring has....
That is why when I do a :rainbow: drop shackle or buggy spring set up I am probably going to do a spring over as well and move my rear perch location to be inboard...less of a buggy spring or shackle length needed.
T1H5_TA3 10-23-2002, 10:41 AM yha, most people will agree, that if they were to go wild with flex , most likely it would be in the rear. the front has the majority of the weight, and the complexity of the stearing, so major flex is some times counter productive up front. the rear tho, man thats a whole diferent game... yes, if you took the same spring on two otherwise identicle trucks but moved one truck's rear springs inboard, that truck would have more rear flex.. the down side is stability... not that it would be enough to push it over the edge.. but every thing has a counter effect that you have to think of.. thats a large part of the planing phase of a build up.. kinda like shotining wheel base to be able to turn tighter.. the down side is you usualy wont be able to climb as well... you may also have problems with drive shaft angles etc.. on the bright side, if wheel travel stayed the same , you would ramp better.. and EVERY ONE know that the ramp shows who realy wheels better right?:flipoff2:
T1H5_TA3 10-23-2002, 10:45 AM both of these rig's are set up real well, both will climb just about any thing around here.. but the blue one is more stable.. the red one flexes better.. go figure.. all depends on how you drive etc...
this pick doesnt show body angle /rear end angle comparison real well.. but you shuld get the point..
T1H5_TA3 10-23-2002, 10:49 AM go ahead and flame me for posting pic's of 'yoda's.. thats what 90% of the guys around here wheel... and unfortunetly they seem to be some of the better built rigs out here to.. but atleast they arnt jeeps right?
snoop dogg 10-23-2002, 11:54 AM maybe im the one thats on crack?? But i was talking about the FRONT AXLE's rear spring hangers. Thanks for the info though;)
snoop dogg 10-23-2002, 11:56 AM Also, I HAVE to outboard the springs b/c im running a Dodge FRONT 60...if you read all the posts about brawler then you will know what im talking about.

Now your talking! But i already knew that:confused: I am LOOKING for pics of some OUTBOARDED FRONT SPRINGS REAR HANGERS. I have seen all the pics of Harkinoffs job...but just not his rear hangers on the front springs. Just looking for some ideas, sheeesh;)
snoop dogg 10-23-2002, 12:03 PM Also, if you so called IH enthusiasts KNEW anything...yall would know that the rear springs on a Scout II are already outside of the frame...keep reading:flipoff2:
EDIT: I re-read my first post, and i see how it could be confusing...but i also see how someone could use some common sense to figure out i was talking about the FRONT SPRINGS:D

I dunno about where your from, but around here...the Yotas seem to hold the title of "White trash" vehicle. Most High schoolers, and young college kids drive them...there a few that are "built"...:flipoff2:
snoop dogg 10-23-2002, 12:11 PM I have read and seen all the pics of shackle reversal's and outboard springs. Well i haven't seen any pics of an outboarded shackle reversal. I saw Rusto' White's Waggy spring pics (which was a sweet job!) And im doing my front spring towers similar to that...But those springs didn't look like they were outboarded b/c his shackle bolts into the bottom of the frame rail.
I have jeep shackles, that are setup for springs that are 2.5in wide (waggy's!!!:) ),
scout springs are 2 inches wide...so i was wondering if i can still use the rear spring hanger on the front end and weld it to the frame and bolt the shackle to it and be done?

What was so special about Rusty's setup? Looks like your normal SOA RS 44044 setup to me... :D :D :D

I agree, design your own, but its ok to get ideas off of someone else, most of us didn't think up this shit on our own!! now back to the spring mount, I used 4"x 3 1/2" box steel, cut it as you can see, first I mounted a piece of 1/8" to the bottom of frame then welded the 1/4 " box to it ,then mounted a gusset for extra strength, piece of cake you just have to put the icing on it:D
Old Scout 10-23-2002, 12:42 PM Just to bug Hooper here is my just tacked mock up RS rear hanger. I'm going this way but 6.5" long not this short 4" The axle is 31.5" center to center with 2.5" springs

More stable based on what? Yes the rig with stiffer springs will not lean more on the road in a corner and feel more stable, but the rig with more flex will walk the axle over an object and not tilt the cab as much and thus is more stable in that situation. But on side hills the stiffer sprung rig will feel more stable.
Get me my point, you need to learn how your rig handles and what you feel comfortable with. I can bet your ass will pucker in my rig long before my will, only cause I know how far I can push it before she wants to dump.
T1H5_TA3 10-23-2002, 01:50 PM corect.. on the red one it has a real soft 1/4 eliptic setup, the cab will lean down hill in even a slight grade, but it doesnt finaly flop till the cab is way past 45 degrees.. (its been rolled about 5 times)
so, yha, stable is purely a subjective fealing... its like when i used to work for rover and we would take people around "the course" i had a guy drive a d90 thry it, then a disco, and finaly a range rover.. he figured that it must have been some sort of trick.. we came in to work the next day to see a tow truck hauling his jeep away, aperently he tryed to run the course in the middle of the night .... oops..

snoop dogg 10-24-2002, 01:08 AM Thanks for the pics, as you can see by the pics that were shown there is different ways to do this...was just compiling a group of different ideas, and what "I" have to deal with. I will design my own;)
thanks

thanks
the reason why most of us tell you to design your own is because, if you copy our design to a T and it breaks, then its our fault, thats my reasoning anyway, not to be a dick, even though I can be:D good luck on the building;)

Why do you think I'm loaded? I have a simple 1200 sq ft home worth ~140k. I still owe the bank 85k on it! I own a 1/3 of a Cabin in Tahoe with my sister and brother as my partners. It's worth ~450k. I rent some of my allotted cabin time to help pay for the my share of the mortgage. One week of cabin rental pays for three months of mortgage. My home did have a garage but it burned to the ground years before I bought the home ( a 1946 model). Yes my project is being built on dirt with a $200 Costco "garage" over it. I'm single with no kids just the " POR get it" dog. Toys are my life. Most married guys don't get to spend 10k on an engine for a ski boat, but the dog doesn't seem to mind! :D

I'm glad the dog doesn't mind OS, cause if'n it did, I'd get another dog.;)
Got an estimate when the "OS Scout" might hit the trail yet?

slipscomb 02-21-2003, 09:41 PM Hey Patrick, never done an outboard spring on a Scout but done plenty on CJ's for full width axles. I normally use 3/8 plate amd just lay a flat plate out from the bottom of the frame and drop trusses up each side of it. Dont have any pics but I'm sure you can use yer imagination. I use Jeep bushings and you can either use the Jeep mounts cut from a stock frame or you can buy pipe from a steel place that will fit the bushings and add yer gussets for strength
snoop dogg 02-22-2003, 12:57 PM hey sean, thanks for the info...me and my friend, you have met him once or twice when you were down in GA...did an outboard on his CJ...we did it like that, but it didn't look pretty with our fabskills:D I have gotten better at fabbing from then...ill get some pics up of when it's done. It will be march 21 when i have the suspension done...SCHOOL SUCKS, gets in the ways of things.
start a thread of your supsension...i would like to see links and coils on a scout. Maybe sometime i can try coils:confused: for now ill keep it simple.
thanks for the help again...always helped me out.
slipscomb 02-22-2003, 06:56 PM Great. Glad to help. I've been keeping track of the build up with the camera but I still haven't finished the first roll. Almost there, though. As soon as I get them developed I'll post them. Got the lower control arms done today. Next is dropping the 350 in to see what I need for the upper links, motor mounts and adapter for the tranny. Also ready to drop my diffs back in and start assembling the Rockwells and building my steering.
Looking forward to checking out pics of yer build up! By the way.....now that I'm dropping a 350 in the Scout it frees up the 345 for the bus! Now just saving up gas money for the trip back down!
snoop dogg 02-22-2003, 10:30 PM sean you have helped more than you could know....better save up that gas so you can wheel for a while down here...lets really plan a trip during this coming summer, i have a bunch of buddy's that love to jam it up!
pics pics pics, ill have some soon...march 21 soon!
