: Removing Anodizing from Aluminum

Okay...I knew I shouldn't have gotten the red anodized bead-lock rings from TR, but I let my ego get in front of me and got them anyway...And, as I knew they would, the anodizing has fadded to pink and looks like shieat.

I've heard from a couple of guy's that Easy-Off oven cleaner will strip the anodizing right off...Is this true? If not I guess I'll spend an hour or two with some 400 grit and a orbital...But that still leaves the pink hew in the cut-outs...Any other suggestions?

A lye (oven cleaner) solution will take off the anodization. Here is a link that shows the removal process and how to anodize it any other color you want.

If you re-anodize them your self take some pics of the process. It would make a great Pirate write-up.

You should re-anodize for the protection. Just leave out the color.

What kind of protection are you talking about? I understand (now) of how the surface is hardened when anodized, but at .006 worth of hardending, 4000lbs rig, and a sharp rock...What's the diff? Or are you talking about oxidation? If that's the case I'm considering a shot of clear once they're clean.

Just the surface hardening. Should help avoid the little nicks and scratches. I do understand that it won't prevent rock rash. I guess anything is better than pink.

anodizing is just artificial oxidization. the good thing is it won't discolor like what will happen if you leave it bare.

Another option might be to have them glass beaded. At work we had a big wet glass beader and it would make alum kinda gray looking, more of a darker color them raw alum. That think would take out litle scrathes and stuff but you had to clear coat it to keep it from getting dirty from the pitting. Just another aption for ya if above doest work.
