: SOA CJ flex (Shock limitied?)
FCwheeler 10-23-2002, 11:01 AM I fawked up on my CJ SOA outboarded springs and scout II D44's. i built shock mounts, flexed it out with the tractor, and measured max compressed and droop distances between mounnts. i thne took these measurements to CarQuest, and had them get me shocks with supposedly the same specs. Bad idea. travel is no where near what i wanted, especially droop. Shocks are 4" longer than what i requested fro compressed length, and 4" shorter extended. And i can't take them back. :mad2: is everyone running a stock-spring SOA on a CJ shock limited? how bad? if not, what shocks are you using?
tuckster 10-23-2002, 01:14 PM why did you go to carquest? that makes no sense to me at all....
anyway, I don't have a CJ, but I think I might be able to help..
try searching first, I would search "shock*" or more specifically "soa and shock*" or "cj and shock*".... but I'll let you do that to get ideas.
you're probably going to want to extend your front shock mount, and I'm not sure what cj's need in the rear, maybe something there too.
rancho makes some decent long shocks, rs5000's and rs9000's.... the longest ones are the rs5012 and rs9012..... 9000's are adjustable and cost more.
chew on that for a while

wrong
longest would be the rs5036 or rs 9036x
they are 36" overall, the 5012/9012 are only 33"
tuckster 10-23-2002, 01:40 PM i stand corrected
are those new, or have I just been in the dark?
first off, why cant you take the shocks back if they are not the ones you ordered
tuckster has the best idea! the front mounts are very easy to extend! pull off the oem front mounts get some thick wall square tube, i think 1-1.25 inch tube fits perfectly in the "channel" of the stock mount, weld, extend the mount up use a bolt and sleave throungh the square stock for your new upper shock mount. you can probably gain 3-4 inches.
its hard to describe, i'll try and get pics.

FCwheeler 10-23-2002, 01:54 PM thanks, good info, BUT
I don't have the $ for BLING BLING Ranchos. i need CHEAP. like less than $ 30 a piece. shock rates, valving, i could give a fuck less. i jus need something there that won't limit travel, and will keep my ass rom bouncin all over the place. :bounce: :bounce: I am trying to avoid expensive brands, as it you are partially paying for the NAME. thats why i went to carquest. $ 15 a piece. and they were SUPPOSED to have the travel i wanted. thanks for the PN's though, i may HAVE to go with expensive shit to get what i need:mad2:
tuckster 10-23-2002, 02:02 PM i think rancho 5000's are like $35 a piece at summit.... you might be able to find a better deal.... maybe pro comp has something comparable at a cheaper price....
sorry to hear you got screwed at carquest.... most of the things that people on this board do for upgrades are the best quality for the least amount of $$.... aside from a few people like camo with their bling bling...
i think if you search around the archives you'll find fairly cheap ideas that work really well... like f-250 shock towers for extending the front shock mount.. they're cheap, but not free....
good luck
FCwheeler 10-23-2002, 02:23 PM I just found'em for $36, 5012's, shipped to my door:D damn, shoulda asked here first, they almost exactly meet my specs, i need 31" extended, 17" compressed. the 5012's are 32"ish and 18". damn close. Thanks! as soon as i get the $144, i'm gettin them. the F250 towers are definately key i have seen them at junkyards before, they are fawkin tall! I'm using stock 85 CJ towers ( the tall-assed ones) in front, with the lower mounts further out on the axle. the setup is pretty much like the late FJ-40 setup. In back i made a scout-style crossmember, as it seems to me that this configuration and mounted the shocks so they are at a 80-degree angle to the axle tube. Thanks again for all the help, once again i shot my mouth off about prices before i even really looked.
BootsntheJeep 10-23-2002, 03:32 PM I still don't see why you can return em if they won't work for your application.
What, did you roll a smoke with the reciept on the way out of the store?
FCwheeler 10-23-2002, 03:48 PM I can't return'em cause i got them through the account of my friend who USED to work there. thats how i got deals on thier shitty parts in the first place. since he got fired, and it was bought on his EMPLOYEE account, no returns. it is in the fine print on the job application. i got fawked out of $60. maybe they would work for someone's SUA CJ or something. What, did you roll a smoke with the reciept on the way out of the store?
nope, but it did cost me the price or a bag of good :smokin: not that i smoke treez or anything :flipoff2:
Keith Strong 10-23-2002, 03:49 PM I paid $27 a piece for my 5012's ;)
Move your upper mount and be done with it

yeah, but you could have popped the extra $20/shock and got what you wanted the first time, and since you just spent $15/shock and can't get the money back then your end cost went up.
Archie_G 10-24-2002, 02:11 PM On my 78 CJ5, the shock mounts to the spring plate. I am able to use my stock length shocks and they are actually too long (SOA with stock springs). Need more down travle? Move the lower shock mount up.
