: detonation problem with Weber
shawnscj 10-23-2002, 11:51 AM I am running a freshly biult 258, bored 30, 4.0L head, GM HEI, and have been running a non feedback Carter BBD.
Recently I picked up a Weber 32/36 for really cheap, I could not pass the oportunity to try it. I am not too happy so far. The power before the secondary is less that desireable, and when on the highway doing around 75 (or 2500-2600 rpms) I can not get this motor to stop pinging. I recurved the dist. withthe heaviest springs and have the vacuum advance packed as far off as it will go (it is the comp recurve kit). Am I missing something, it ran great (no detanation) before I installed this carb. I took the carb apart and saw nothing plugged or broke. I even raised the float level to try to get it to run a little richer, and have the fuel pressure up to 5psig. Am I F#cked up, or is the carb?
FCwheeler 10-23-2002, 12:13 PM I'm sure you already know all this, but here goes anyways:
1) try colder plugs
2) try less advance
3) if it only pings when you are right on it, find out what (metering rods, jets, etc) controls fuel delivery at 3/4-WOT (can't help you there, i know less than nothing about webers)
4) If ther power gains aren't great anyways, why fawk with it? go back to the carter.
T1H5_TA3 10-23-2002, 01:29 PM if it ran good before the swap, then it sounds to me like its running lean.. id check for vaccume leaks, then re jet iff need be..
simple enough that even the ju guys prob could have figured it out..
mikein 10-23-2002, 01:50 PM I have the Weber also, we retarded the timing to like 7-7.5 degrees and it took care of the pinging.
krankitup 10-23-2002, 03:30 PM You might check and make sure all your vaccume lines are in the correct spots. When I did mine I hooked a couple up wrong and it wasn't driving very good. When I fixed them all was good.
shawnscj 10-23-2002, 05:08 PM Hey T blah blah T blah 3, I don't have any vacuum lines, just for the vacuum retard, and my manifolds are good and tight with new gaskets, so:flipoff2: and :flipoff2: JU
Thanks mike, I retarded the initial timming setting to about 7, and really had to turn back the adjustable vacuum advanse diaphragm. Seems to be better, but not great.

:crybaby:
sounds like i steped on a newbie foot..
sounds like some one flunked high school auto shop.
still sounds to me like you are running lean and that is causing the eng to ping... it would also explane alot about why power is less the desireable..
so now you retarded the timing a bunch to get it to quit pinging, but now your fuel milage has gone to hell and there is no power.
mayby there was a reason why you got such a good deal on it?
could have restricted emulsion tubes, pluged/wrong size jets, how do the air bleads look?
congadulatins on your exelent mecanical work! now go back to ju and quit whining..
T1H5_TA3 10-24-2002, 11:07 AM oh.. and read my name backwards..
shawnscj 10-25-2002, 10:42 AM 3 blah T blah blah T whatever whatever blah blah
Do you just continue with the nonsense pads or do you actually contrubute some tech on this board. Like I said it was way too good of a deal to not try. I am finding out that it is not a good carb for a modified 258.
I love how peoploe hate the newbies
T1H5_TA3 10-25-2002, 01:33 PM you asked a question, i provided an answer. aperently you dont agree with it. i gave several things to check.
the webers are far better carbs performance wise compared to the pos carter. however they are more tempermental than a holley. it is verry common to have even varnish buildup to restrict the passages enough to cause drivability problems.
we dont hate all newbies, just the ignorant ones that ask stupid questions, then not beliving the replys they get. now make sure you read the newbie post and grow some thicker skin or go back to ju where the rest of the idiots are.
shawnscj 10-25-2002, 05:18 PM I appriciate your input. I will take it off for a 3rd time and clean it again. I keep searching and seeing post of how great these things are, so I know I am the one that is all F'd up.
