Does anyone have a picture of the Camel Trophy Rangies from the 80's? I need to get a good view of the access ladder to try and imitate it. I have only found one picture, and it doesn't show where the slide is or hinge is.

TIA

September's Landrover Owners International has a write up and good photos of a rebuilt Camel Rangie - there were comments on how accurate he had got the ladder...

If you can't get your hands on it I can scan it but it will take weeks cos I am pretty busy:(

Thanks for the lead! I will probably order a copy as my wife has stated that the new step bumper was close, but not as good as a ladder.

Redrangie,

If you get some info on the ladder, can you send me a copy too? I'm after the same thing as well. Close as I can tell from the camel pics, the ladder is hinged on top and rests on the upper tailgate. I was worried the stress that'll be on the upper tailgate and how the long term effects. Another problem (maybe) is that when you open the upper tailgate then the ladder's feet will prolly slide off the tailgate as it swings upward.

I was leaning towards a ladder that goes all the way from the roof rack to the top of my (home made) bumper and have a hinge in the middle with rubber feet to rest on the upper tailgate. But the bulk of the support is on top where it's attached to the rack and on the bottom where it sits on top of the bumper. The hinge in teh middle is to fold it while opening the upper tailgate.

Or maybe I'm just making too complicated and should stick with the camel picture. Afterall, those guys are hauling lots of weight on those ladders for a couple of weeks during the trophy run.

Thanks.

Alia,
One idea is that the ladder, , is actually channeled inside a bracket, and would swivel/slide upwards as the upper tailgate is lifted. A top hinge on the rack would work as well I think, but I haven't tested the radius yet to see if it is constant. It has been 30 degrees here and snowing, and my truck doesn't fit in the garage.

That window frame is plenty stout, especially when closed.

Let's email each other when we come up with something.

Maybe I should just stick with the half ladder idea like the camel guys. Doesn't look too complicated to duplicate but wish I could see a picture of the upper tailgate in the "open" position with the ladder.

No Kidding. You'd think as much as these were photographed we could find one.
