: maximizing XJ rear leaf spring flex.
JohnBuuu 09-21-2001, 05:12 PM howdy fellas...
id like some advice on getting a bit more out of the back of my xj in the flex dept.
im running alcan 6in mil wrapped springs, with a 1.5in lift shackle at the moment.
what do yall suggest?
(im not tryin to put revolvers on though)
Monkeyboy 09-21-2001, 05:16 PM Body lift HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Sawzall and maybe some of them solid steel .5" or 1" liftblocks that rubicon express makes or used to make.
The Californian 09-21-2001, 06:53 PM Rocktoad, you feelin alright? hes lookin for flex, not height . Im not too familiar with the alcans, but if they have clamps, see if you can open em up. Also, and I dont know if you really wanna do this, but I have heard that "trimming" the military wrap some will let up some stiffness. However, should you break your mainleaf, you're fawked. Check your shocks to make sure they arent limiting travel, break out the ramp(oh my God!! did he say ramp?!?! ) Yes, break out the ramp and check your clearances. Make sure anything that may limit travel is addressed. Brake lines, make sure they are long enough. Also, get extended bump stops, its kinda hard to explain, but a longer bumpstop offers a better pivot point and keeps your springs from looking sad(get it? frown? lol I kill me! ) Greasable shackles? Thats a possibility for the rears. Maybe loosen up the shackle a bit too(not too much ) Umm...thats all I can think of right now. Hope it helps.
Monkeyboy 09-21-2001, 07:06 PM must be the 37 hours of work in three days thats making me crazy

No worries, bodylift on an XJ made it all worthwhile

wsuxjer 09-21-2001, 08:28 PM Did you make sure nothing is binding? IE, driveshaft, shocks, e-brake, brake lines, etc? Also try loosening your shackle bolts a little and greasing them up.
JohnBuuu 09-21-2001, 08:32 PM i already have 4in of bodylift on my xj,so i think ive got that base covered.
seriously though....ive got a good bit of sheetmetal from back there gone, and my shocks are, well, will be long enough in a few days....no other hangups...brakelines are good, shit is lubed, yada yada....
ill try loosening some of the clamps a bit and try it out.
thanks and keep em comin....peace

BLAHAHAHA hell yeah Chicky! Better yet, say phuckit and cut out the rear floor pan, make a couple of custom hoops that tie into a full internal/external cage, and do a complete custom coilover rear
oops dammit, did I get carried away again?
SOCALXJ 09-21-2001, 09:17 PM I opened the clamps on my rear leafs and gained around a 1" of extra droop.
Quarter eliptic is the way to go though. Avalanche Eng. sells a kit.

Not if you do it right, saw a nice lookin one on a OD green XJ up on the web somewhere. Looked pretty fawkin cool to me. Also the nice thing about the external on an XJ is when you roll it a couple times, your unibody doesnt get all twisted to fawk and you can still close the doors(for the most part)

how about weld some steel blocks onto your axle...make it heavier so it pulls down more on your leafs or add a 60!

First question. How new are the springs?
NE-RokToy 09-22-2001, 06:08 AM maybe pull a leaf out of the bottom of the leaf pack? expecially if you don't haul anything. But also like mike said how old are the springs?
JohnBuuu 09-22-2001, 03:15 PM firstly...ive got an hp 60 on the way....
secondly....i have plans for for a custom coilover in the rear, but i doubt ill do that anytime soon. im trying to take the xj as hardcore as i can, while still keeping it safe on road....i like the simplicity and functionality of the leafs.
also, the leafs are about a year old, they are broken in. id like to avoid removing leafs from it as well.
i know this isnt leaving a huge amount of options open...
i love the flex of the quarter elip, but that doesnt exactly fit in too well with keeping it street safe.
i suppose proper shock legnth, and maybe modifying my shackle location and setup similar to "borton" would be on order
thanks for the help fellas, and keep it comin!

SOCALXJ 09-22-2001, 08:04 PM Hey John, you better strengthen up the rear shackle mount area, and main eye mount area, that damn 60's weighs a ton, especially adding huge tires.

reinforcement braces for that area are in the works, as well as a sick uniframe cradle with rollcage tie in points in the works.
Not 1/4 elliptic, but how about 3/4 elliptic? I had a buddy with a YJ that did a buggt spring front and had plates on the side of the buggy spring. The plates did two things. The added stability to keep it from shifting to the side and he inserted a pin when driving on the highway. It acts just like regular leaf springs when pinned, and a buggy spring when disconnected. I thought it was a great idea.

borton 09-24-2001, 02:10 PM Johnbuuu, I like how mine works, but, it will give you a couple of inches more lift doing it how I did mine, I'm now close to where the revolvers gave me with out the rear steer affects of them and bad affects on steep stuff.
