I am talking to someone about buying a truck in town but they said it has special paperwork because they swapped in a SBC for the stock 22R motor. I'm wondering if someone on here can explain to me what that's about since they say it registers as a Toyota.

It can register as a damn john deer, But with smog laws, it must be a legit swap, with inspections from the dmv. If your outside of clark county, their isn't any smog laws(except maybe carson city). I don't know where you are at.

The special paperwork is probably for emissions. And I dont see how a toyota with a SBC is gonna pass that inspection. The counties involved are Clark county and I think up around Reno, Sparks, Carson City. All I can say is check the paperwork well and make sure you can register it. Good Luck

ya its Reno area.

I have NO clue what to check for paperwork. Does it say "hey this is a toyota with a SBC so it's legal" or what?

Reno/sparks is WASHOE county. Carson City has no smog (lucky bastards) so I thought I'd fidn out from those who might know HERE before i waste time moeny and effort trying to chase this down.

Check with local DMV. I got a big hassle last year trying to smog my 1968jeepster in Sparks. We had put in an LS1 3 years prior, had to go to DMV and get the swap paperwork to smog it. Since the vehicle was pre-1983 and the engine newer, no problem. After 1983 there are lots of rules, and even more if it's newer it must be OBDII compliant or some crap. Best to check the laws first.

The cutoff year for "certified" swaps is 81. Nevada uses the EPA's guide for legality, you can google "EPA engine conversion" and see their rules. From what I remember about platform swaps, the SBC won't smog in a 81+ toyota.

Interesting. I beleive the owner said they have the paperwork that tells them it smogs differently from what this truck did stock. Owner said it passed smog. Its a 1980 so that makes sense why it could pass smog.

Cool. Thanks everyone. I was trying to figure out what this "special" paperwork would be for. Thought I was getting the run around with being smog legal.
