: Need advice for Stock Mod overall axel width.

I searched but could use some fresh input ...

Cutting D60s for a TJ to run Modified Stock - 35 and 36 in tires.

I've got the Allied rim and WMS axel guys in OK to confirm it is most probable I can get the their calipers inside of 15" X 10'W Allied rims with 4" back spacing ... to get the centers near rim center for better turning.
Allied is sending some unwelded dummy rims and centers for trial fitting just to make sure.

The rear should be about 3", or so, less wide than the front ... I always nick the cones with my rear tire!

Soo ... each 10" rim with 4" backspacing leaves 6" to the inner bead seat of the rim plus 1/2" outer rim and beadlock ring width plus 1" of tire buldge = 7-1/2" X 2 wheels = approx 15" wider than wheel mounting surfaces (WMS) with both tires mounted.

Rules say outside to outside of tires can be no more than 80"
Cal-Rock Mod-Stock gates are 100" wide.

The front axel WMS can be no wider than 65" ... 80" total width.(65 + 15 = 80")
It seems I should go a little narrower than that.

It's all about balancing width for stability and narrow for turns and gates ...

I gotta cut these axels so I can get on with this project~

I could sure use some suggestions based on actual competition experience as to what you'all would say the best over all front and back axel/wheel width should be for UROC, CAL-ROC & Pro-Rock competitions in their Modified Stock classes.
Please ...

When I had 36 x 12.5 TSL Radials munted on my 15x10 Allieds with 3.5" bs, my total outside width was 83" on my 65" D60. The TSL's are a bit wider than a BFG or Mtr though.

SInce, it sounds like I'll be competing against you next season, why don't you run narrow track cj width?:flipoff2:

Thanks, Scout Dude.
You conifimed my figures ... I'll try to err a little narrower ... but your competitive spirit is questionable ... :flipoff2:

Our RCAA buggy was less than 75" overall (can't give exact numbers :flipoff2: ). I think 65WMS is WAY too wide. I'd go with about 60"WMS...

with a 63" wms, 4 1/8 bs 15x10 wheels and 38x14.5 sx's my overall was 80", now with the 17" wheels and 12.50 krawlers i'm at 75.5" i wouldn't go any wider than 62-63"
also there is NO set width for the gates they range from 80something to whatever i feel like, in the stockmod. class of course

What about 8" rims, or even 7's?

From what I know and been told by the local gurus those narrow rims keep their edges off the rocks ....
... but also keep the tread away from a good footprint.

... now what about a narrower rear WMS ... ???

You've got a balancing act here...going narrower on a stock-mod is different then doing so on a small buggy as your COG will be higher. Sure, Mike's rig is narrow but with his low weight and COG, he can afford it...I'd look for a front WMS around 62" or finished width around 77".
With that rim offset, will your tires rub the frame?

let me know if you need a willwood disk brake set up for the front. it is still kinda proto type but it will let you run a 4 piston willwood caliper and 12.5" rotor so you can use any 15" rim. cost is about $1150 complete.

What's your weight distribution gonna be like? A narrower rear axle will have less impact on stability if you're heavy up front...

If you have to err one way or the other, err 2-4 inches narrow. Wheel spacer/adapters are cheaper than axle mods.

Good point, RedBull ...
A jeep's tub with the required full floor board keeps the CG much higher.

That brake setup sounds great, Camo.
I was looking at Waggoner's 15" disc setup here ...
http://www.wagonermachine.com/15wheeldiscbrake.htm
... at $550.00 complete, but TH350 auto trannie will really tax the brakes and I'm sure the Willwood setup is far better.
Keep us informed as to the perfect "Camo trannie" will ya.
It's a great thread and I'm watching it intently.

It should be pretty front heavy, Randy.
Only the allowed 2.5" wheel base stretch, a 4.3, TH350 and Atlas and no frills.

We are going to set it up on the full frame and tub jig Jim Peterson's (Amy Bullock's dad) built the She-J rig on and uni-body the frame, tub and cage ...

I'm running 60 and 58.5 and I'm not sure I'd go any different next time. Right now I can run 72, 75 and 81" width with the different wheels and spacers I have. FWIW I've got 4.5 BS on my steel front 15" wheels with about 3/18-1/2" room to spare. Jake's got my Jeep right now if you want to check it out.

Good luck- looks like it'll be a decent rig, Jim does good work.
