Yes, what axles ?
I want to do the same with SJ Waggy D44 front ant rear axles.
But with max 35" tires.

That is definently a nicely built cherokee. :D

Is Nick Colorado?

Maybe he will chime in, but he'll have to register first.

OK NICK, QUIT LURKING AND JOIN THE CROWD!

And a pre-emptive :flipoff2: welcome newbie!

Yup, that's Nick from Ft Collins, CO. When those pics were taken he was running D44/9", but he is putting a D60 in the front this week.

Sweet rig

Nicest exo i'v seen yet.

Thanks for the pics.

Nick, chime in and tell us how ya tied it into the frame man.

Obviously he has fab skills or someone to do it for him, why no custom front bumper and stronger front vs the Manik grill guard? Time restraints i assume.

skulltoy
10-24-2002, 11:27 AM
Allright here's the scoop! I just got off the phone with Nick.

In the pics(taken sunday)

44 hp, reverse cut, ARB, 5.13's, Alloy shafts.
9", 35 spline, spool.
Bilstien shocks, Crossover steering, TR beadlocks, and grooved 37" Boggers.

As of right now the 44 has been taken out and it is sitting on a high pinion 60!

Hope this answers your questions.

Looks like it's time to take the rear door handles off and weld them biatches shut.
Nice rig.

You should mention those front bilsteins are remote reservoir. I saw that thing when we were running carnage a few weeks back. We exchanged the "cool XJ" saying and rolled on. That thing looked like it does well.

Thanks for all the kind words. All the specs are listed in my sig. The EXO is tied to the frame in 22 places. I have laid the jeep over on it's side 4 times with nothing but a broken mirror. Only on it's lid once:D

Couple of questions for you Nick.

What size, thickness, and material is the cage tubing?

What were you breaking on the 44?

XtremeEngineering
10-24-2002, 02:13 PM
The cage is all 1.5 120 wall DOM. The 44 was damn reliable for the weight of the rig. (4700lbs) I did however brake ujoints and axles every once and a while. For those that wheel with me like Skulltoy, Slagburn, and XtremeJ they can atest why I needed the 60. Plus the YJ that got the 44 only has a 2.5 liter big block so it is now a pretty bullit proof combo for both. If I did not have the other jeep that need the 44 I would have just CTM'ed it an been done with it.

What springs are you running up front? I'm assuming you don't run any kind of tracbar/panhard bar but do you have any antiwrap bar at all?

JS-Economos
10-24-2002, 02:35 PM
Nick, I'd love to see some shots of your rear bumper if you have any. Thanks bro.

Thanks for the info. I will be going the CTM route. Glad to know my original choice will work. It's taken me long enough to get this far.

A little off topic, but how do you like the 5.13s? I'm asking because I am building a D60 rear, and D44 front for my XJ, and am installing the 5.13s, and will be running 35" tires. I guess if it's too much gear, I'll just have to go 37s!!! You ever run 35s on yours? And if so what was the RPM like?

BTW, very cool XJ!!! Hope to EXO mine some day too.

The springs are a custom set that I built here at the shop. The main leave is a YJ unit and there are 7 more under that. It is a shackle reversal and did have severe axle wrap until I installed a Traction bar off the diff to the cross member. It is now a climbing bitch as you can see from the pics. The 5.13's are a great gear with 35's if you still have the 4.0. My jeep is heavy and could use even more gear. With th AW4 tranny it will run 75 down the Interstate just fine. Sorry I can't post my own pics. I will see if Skulltoy can later of that stuff. For those of you thinking or doing a spring conversion be aware that the unibody needs alot of reinforcement added. When I put the traction bar on I was wheeling on the rock garden we have here at the shop. About 5 minutes into it I riped the cross member right off the frame(If that is what you call it)So I have completely rebuilt the frame rails with no problems since. I have competed in the jeep aswell as wheeled the piss out of it for the past three years with the springs on and no problems, no stress cracks. The jeep is lower than a Stock Suberban and as wide, so therefore it is xtremely stable. Both axles are placed forward so when the tire stuffs they clear the sheet metal. It wil ramp a 1300 on a 23 degree(Even if ramps are for pu$$ys)

SO WHAT YEAR D60 DID YOU FIND?

XtremeEngineering
10-25-2002, 10:20 AM
1979 F350 Single wheel. It's sot of ironic because the 44 was a 1979.

you said you used a YJ main leaf that answers my off set question, but to save me a 2 second search is the YJ leaf 2.5in offset?

EDIT: TJ=>YJ, really bad typo:eek: :flipoff2:

How become a member of nicks Club as a german ?
The only thing I dont have my tire are less than 35" (33").
But I have a chevy v8, the engine makes the tires smashing to heaven.

Slagburn
10-25-2002, 07:44 PM
ashman, did you just ask what offset a TJ leaf spring has?
 OK that's a typo right?

and AUR, define "tires smashing to heaven" real quick.

sorry, couldn't resist either one.

Woops.

SEARCH:
"The BASIC ADVANTAGE to the waggy spring on a YJ is the offset spring pin. Mount the long side on the fixed mount on the frame and you push your axle 2in."

So Im guessing that the YJ has a centered pin, since a waggy spring is 1in longer and 1in offset that gets the 2in increased wheelbase.

thanks for the search Ashman

That is a damn nice cage, really like that it ties into the fram at 22 points. You willing to build cages for other XJ's? I am down in Boulder CO and my piece is in need of a cage bad and would definetly be interested in having that same cage put on my rig. Too bad there is about a foot of snow on the ground here in Boulder now, Carnage Creek season is almost over, would have liked to see your rig on the trail.
Oh here is a pic of my heep to give you and idea of what you are dealing with.
