sure seems like a lot of effort for 31 splines.

Don't worry 35 spline is on it's way:)

they gonna fit through those d44 spindles?

No, on my own truck I'm going to use 60 spindles.

That would be a pretty trick axle. Aren't deep ratio, low pinion 9" gears stronger than 60 gears?

It's been my experience that the gears ARE the weak link in a 9". Haven't seen many broken axles, but seeing a big chunk of pinion dangling from a driveshaft is a monthly occurance.

Thats pretty sweet and parts are plentiful and cheap:flipoff2:

The gears are not the weak link in a 9".
once you get by busting axles, the 'stock' 3rd member blows up.
Thats way everyone that races them usualy goes with a nodular center section.
A buddie 1/4 miled his done up Studabaker :barf:. First season his rear end BLEW up. The pinion was still attached to the driveshaft!! LOL
then he went Nodular.

9" gears are stronger than D60 IMO

People have been doing this for years boys. Little machine work and its on. Build the 9 with good components (gears, noduar housings, etc) and they are strong and light.

For the guys that think 9" is weak, this differential is like all others, you must know your horse power and torque and spend the right amount of money, it is like building a motor for RPM you have to spend money on the right parts and assemble it correctly. This is the reason for failure.I use three 9" diff's 6x6, i pull a 50,000 lbs sled, i do tug-a-war on concrete, hooked to a 2 1/2 ton military truck, i run long distance weighing 25,000 lbs. i have no problems, no failures. steve Differential eng. inc.

9" gears are a little smaller in diameter than 60's but A LOT thicker.

I have a lotta respec for the 9 -- I've seen it hold up under H-U-G-E power. Enough power to twist 40-spline axles off! ...and then I've seen one shell itself on the trail with 28" axles. I'm betting Steve is on target, here -- it depends on the parts you put into it -- and how you assemble it.

This probably deserves a separate thread...
What's the best way to build a budget 9-inch chunk?

There's a post here on pirate about these but its older so I cant find it with no search so here's a better full float setup and still on the cheap:

To cut down on hub stick-out, I would consider using spindles/hubs from an application with external lock-outs. You could then get a custum axle shaft made with the outer flange made onto the end of the shaft (like a typical rear FF shaft) with a bolt pattern that would bolt to the hub where the lock-out used to bolt up.

Anybody have any input on this kit: http://www.9inchfloater.com/RrEndKits/RrEndKits.asp

Seems like a decent price to have pretty much everything supplied.

what about using 14 bolt hubs, spindles, and resplined axleshafts? do 14 bolt shafts have enough diameter to be resplined after the kneck down?

Mine is 8 lug. I used front Ford D60 spindles. Turned the back side in a lathe to get a press fit into my 9" bearing end. I wanted to make them bolt on, but the flange on the 9" axle bolt pattern was too narrow. Bolts rubbed the hub assembly. So I just welded them on. I could have cut a flange to weld to the 9" housing to use the stock ford bolt pattern, but didn't.

The Badlands Machine Shop in Attica, IN cut shafts for me. 31-spline on one end and 30 on the other. I'm using drive flanges in stock front hubs. All four wheels use the same hub/rotor assembly.

If starting with a spidertrax housing, what would be the best/cheapest way to get an 8 lug full floater? Cut the ends off a 14 bolt, run custom shafts for 35 spline? I'd rather not run 31 spline.

I would say using stock 14 shafts you could respline them to a ford 31 spline easily maybe even 35 spline if you could cut off the "neck down". If you had to you could get aftermarket shafts and get them splined to fit any carrier spline.

I've never really seen what kind of jig people use to align the spindles...Any links for that?
