Water, food, gas, tent, and a few vacation days. The rest of it's bling that makes your truck look cool and other people drool. :)

Supplies to keep you alive, supplies to keep you comfortable, supplies to get you and your vehicle back out of wherever you are, supplies to fix your truck when something goes wrong - communications gear for when the rest of the above fails.

like mentioned above...but first things first get there and back....just like regular wheeling, Jack, spare tire(s), strap, winch (maybe), shovel, axe...throw your camping gear in and go...you'll gain efficiancy as you go and change things to make it more convenient.

I've had plans to build my box van into a camper but before I started my girlfriend and I took a 2k trip around the southwest with a futon in the back, a coleman cooler, LED lantern, roll up Cabelas table, solar shower, 2 lawn chairs and a marine porta potti. It was awesome.

Lots of money! or a moderate amount of money and lots of time! :D

Don't build your vehicle with a list of what others tell you is mandetory, build it with items mandetory for your style of travel!

i've refined my list over the years. it's a question of balance -- what do you really need vs space -- not to mention the ease of unpacking and packing up your camp site. of course, you should have sufficient recovery, repair, and safety equipment, such as hilift, tools, factory service manual, cb, jerry cans, water cans, water filter, maps, compass, and even rudimentary hiking gear if you need to walk out to get help (e.g. backpack). one thing i like to do is review at the end of a trip and try to trim excess stuff next time, or come up with better solutions that aren't so bulky or heavy. for example, my zodi shower originally seemed like a good purchase, but when space as at a premium, i find it too bulky and unnecessary -- a simple basin of hot water and cup serves just as well and takes up little space. a large 18gal poly water tank was my best investment, as carrying sufficient water can sometimes be difficult to pack well.

Whatever you decide to bring, keep track of where you put stuff so you can get to it easily and quickly when you need it.
