ok time to step up the marketing efforts i am looking at ad space in the various off road mags .
tell me what mag is your favorite and why ?
is it the rockcrawling coverage , the layout , the tech or something else .

they are all about the same price to advertise in ..but which one to choose ;)

thanks for the input

I'd say either 4WD & Sport Utility or Peterson's 4Wheel & OffRoad. IMO they have some of the better tech. Still no match for the quality of information you can get off the Web. The mags don't have much of the stuff that I am looking for. Off Road and Four Wheeler seem to Poser oriented.

agreed - If your offering lots of Crome:flipoff2: , then Off-Road would be good. If bolt on, Four Wheeler may be good too, otherwise I'd stick to 4WD-SU or Peterson's.

My favorite mag is the one that is updated every 2 seconds. THE POR BB.:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

4wd-Su gets my vote No :rainbow: rigs with 500hp/44" tires on a 10 and 12 bolt with a $2000 paint job. :shaking:

4WD@SU. More rock crawler orientated. None of the :rainbow: mud trucks with chromed springs and drivelines that the other mags love to put on the cover.

2000 dolalr paint job? that's a poser rig, you gotta top atleast 5 grand to make the pages of 4wheeler! oh, and the tires must also outweigh the axles too, no more than 1/2 ton running gear will make it into print!

Hey, your PM box is full, but I thought you might want to consider some signage at some of our events. I sanction competition mud racing events, primarily in the Midwest (though I'm trying to expand in every direction). No, these are not "rock" events, however these ARE the events that are attended by the 4wd enthusiasts in this area. We typically work with local clubs on these races, and many of their members are into rocks, as of course are many of the spectators. In addition, the guy I normally use as a promoter is expanding beyond mud to include Tough Trucks, monsters, and yes eventually sanctioned competition rock crawling. Might be a nice supplemental form of advertising for you. Need to know more, just check out my website:

www.gumbo4x4.com

Or my promoter's www.smore4x4.com

Or, drop me an e-mail or PM

Maybe it's just me, but you ought to talk to some people who advertise in the mags already, and see what they have to say. I know Jack at CTM has been advertising in all the mags, and he'll have some good input. :p

I wonder if you could ask Barnes and Nobles how many of each magazine they sell. Would that be useful info? Just a laymen's thought.

I’ve been reading 4 Wheeler since 1976. I think I’ve had a subscription to every domestic 4 wheel-related mag ever published as they have come-and-gone, changed names etc. Today I think most of the mags are :rainbow: 4 Wheeler, 4WDOR, Off Road, JP, and 4WD & SUV are now all owned by one publisher, Primedia. (As an aside Primedia also owns all the mags listed below) I have a subscription to all 5 only because its cheaper than just picking up the occasional copy at the newsstand. If I were to advertise in one mag it would be 4WD & SUV but I think it is only slightly less :rainbow: If I were to read only one mag it would be 4WD & SUV.

I’d say forget the print mags and advertise on PBB, Snort BB, http://www.4wdlinks.com , http://www.rockcrawlin.com , http://www.rockymountainextreme.com , http://www.wheelingarizona.com , http://www.texasoffroad.net , http://www.jeepaholics.com , http://www.4x4wire.com , http://www.californiajeeper.com , http://www.4x4wire.com , http://www.rockmodified.com , http://www.4wheeln.com

Here are the automotive mags that Primedia owns:

Hey Allen.....I would hit the web super hard...all the roc crawling comps hard....rock buggy supply is very geared toward what the name says so as expensive as mags are mabye hit the specific groups.. I still think all the mags are geared to general "jeepers"

Alan, if you insist on advertising in a magazine, I would go for 4WD&SU, chances are your target market reads this one more than any of the others.

If you request the advertiser's media kit from them, it should include their most current circulation and sometimes some demographic information about the readership as well. This should help you make better than just an educated guess.

After seeing the success of companies like High Angle Drivelines, I would tend to think that pushing internet and forum advertising FIRST would be a more efficient use of your advertising budget.

I was TT's first advertising manager and I had to do a lot of the research from scratch; the demographics are often surprising (and dissapointing), many small 4x4-related businesses advertise on the large commercial rags because they feel they "have to", but they get very little return for their investment.

Last year I did two different advertising studies for well-known 4x4 companies (sorry, can't disclose their names) and the results were less-than-stellar. Make sure you track your calls and/or revenue stream so you can figure out if your campaign is working.

Good luck, let me know if there is anything I can do to help, I am not doing any consulting right now but I can give you some pointers, share some insight on the market.

First, I would get your "WWW" button fixed in the bottom of your post. Then I would sponsor one of POR's events like BnT just did and have a big sale afterwards--seems to have worked for him. This board and others seems like an excellent way to initially promote your stuff. I think Lance should have a "commercial" forum where people could go to see who does what. It would be good for small guys starting out if it was not real expensive to get rolling. Like $20-$50 for a commercial post for your stuff.

To get more serious you will want to consult with some very experienced people because $$ spent on advertising can be wasted if not put in the right place. 4WDSUV was the first place a buddy of mine listed his business and he is doing well. Have tons of catalogs ready for all inquiries and orders. Like Rich said I would sponsor one of his comps and get permission to hand out catalogs to everyone there. I know as internet people we tend to think that everyone reads these boards, but there are alot of people in our sport that do not know how to turn on a computer.

Good luck.

LOL  ... that magazine is hilarious, I tried to find it at Safeway the other day to show to a friend but I guess they don't have it anymore .. seriously though it is hilarious, if you have never seen it you need to look for it and take a look.

60seriesguy makes some very good points. Consider your products and market. Then check the circulation numbers and markets of the various mags and bounce that off who your target buyer is.

This is a business venture, not a "which mag gets it" choice. You want to target the mag that will give you the best return on your money.

There is tons of informal hard core solid tech here, but is it turning cash? I dunno.

Will you do 24" lifts to feed your family?

It all depends on what your scope of sales is...

Jess, would you say that the "investment" of giving $400 in shafts away here gets you more business than $250 in the mag every other month? I would have to say so, since I know that I plan on using you for my projects and my customers projects based solely on what I have seen here. The cool thing about here is that it is free speech so you get quality opinions compared to the mags.

Sounds like you have all the bases covered. One thing, though. Maybe it is me, but I get the 404 error page when I click on your WWW link, not the one in your sig.
