So we just finished the suspension on my girlfriends WJ (4.5" RockKrawler X-Factor long arm--33x12.50's), wheeled it twice, and ripped the rear bumper cover off (I can't believe it made it through the first trip). I have been looking around at some of the aftermarket rear bumpers (all 4 of them that are available) and had planned on making one kind of like the ProtoFab or Perkins Performance one.
However, the more I look at it the more I want to cut out the spare tire well and move the gas tank and charcoal canister up about 10". From the looks of things it seems like a no brainer, but I can't find any write ups from anyone that has ever done this. The only challenge that I can forsee would be how to get the filler neck and tube to the tank--it looks like I would have to run the filler tube through the uni-body's "frame" rail to get to the higher tank.
I've heard of people doing this but can't find any pics or write-ups of any kind.
So, my question is...why should I, why should I not do this???

Thanks man...I never thought to check Jeepforum. I normally come here first if it involves a cutting tool and a welder.

I swear the guys at Jeep take stupid pills before building any grand cherokee. I helped my buddy do this and I for the life of me cannot figure out how they thought that it was a good idea to put a tank that low. We cut holes in the unibody to run the filler necks and it worked fine. But have you seen that poor excuse for a rear "4 link/3link" :barf: Whatever happened to the good old rear tire carriers? :shaking:

I ran mine through the unibody. I cut a hole through with a hole saw and welded in a piece of tube then put the hose through. I pulled the filler neck and cut it down so it would not kink the hose. It works great and not hard to do. I can almost say it was the best mod on this rig. No telling how many times I would have bashed the tank if I ould not have done this.

Yeah, when I did mine I also put one of the thicker factory skids on, 3/16" stamped with ribs and dimples for strength, and even up there 8" I've still knocked my skid good enough to dent it a couple times. As long as I dont crush the skidplate up into the gas tank like I did before the raise. It was to the point where it would only hold about 17 gallons out of 20.5 haha
