: Leaky steering box fitting..what to do?
Rerard 10-25-2002, 01:00 AM High pressure line on my scout II box is leaking... it worked fine in my old box but that one blew up, so I got a new box from napa /w warranty. Everything looks great except for this leaky fitting. Its actually fine at idle but turn the wheel and it starts seeping out.. teflon didnt help, any ideas?
SMART ASS 10-25-2002, 01:07 AM Its leaking at the threads of the high pressure into the steering box...

I ass-u-me that box uses flare fittings.
Flares seat at their face, so teflon on the threads wont help.
Check the tube and the box to make sure they are the correct type and not mismatched.
Check for cracked tube at the flare.
Check the sealing surface in the box.
You can make a soft copper gasket out of crimp-on eye terminals if the seat is less than perfect.

coyote 10-25-2002, 08:32 AM the piece looks threaded down pretty far...one side is high pressure and the other is low, on a friends the low side has just a hose barb, so maybe the threads are worn out...could try plumbers putty on the low side only....or swap it out....
check your seating surfaces. i just rebuilt my box and it slid in my truck bed. it put a small nick in the fitting and now it spews like mad,
The Jerk 10-25-2002, 08:48 AM swap it out , or use the redneck mans fix all, JB weld in place of thread tape

Rerard 10-25-2002, 10:14 AM Thanks for the suggestions guys.. plummers putty is a good idea, jb weld is last resort.
WhiskeyTango 10-25-2002, 05:32 PM Jimmy, do you mean put JB weld around where the fitting comes in to seal it up??
TheLakeRat 10-25-2002, 05:40 PM you must have the wrong fitting for that box or it's missing the O-ring.
pull the line off and look in the fitting of the box. if it has a brass cone in it then your line needs to be a inverted flare type fitting. if there is no brass nipple then it will be the o-ring style and you will need a line that has a rubber o-ring on it.
Rerard 10-25-2002, 05:41 PM well I took it out, cleaned the fitting and the hole in the box both really good... then put an o-ring around the fitting and wrapped the hell out of it with teflon.. seems to be ok now, still a little bit seeping out but not that bad. This weekend im going to see if I can find an o-ring that actually fits down inside the hole.

rockdawgfj40 10-25-2002, 07:33 PM yes you should have an o-ring on that side:D
If the box has a warranty why not get a different one? If it turns out to be the hose have a new end put on it. No teflon or o-ring (if it's a flare fitting type) will last long under pressure. Why spend time on a jury rig fix when a proper fix takes less time to figure out?
