I've been reading tons of information lately on swapping in a 5.0 into a jeep. I just have a few questions that I haven't been able find anwsers for.

-What kind of gas mileage would one except? Probably a lot better then what I'm getting now with my 258

-How long do these engines last (miles)?

-Anything wrong with the 5.0's out of thunderbirds, found one for $650 with 63K on it and another one with 93K for $600? What are some other vehicles/years to look for besides mustages?

-Would I need an adapter to bolt up my jeep T18a/d20 combo?

-Do I need to find one with a manual tranny so I can use the bell housing? The bellhousing from my 258 wouldn't bolt up would it?

-Hows the low-end torque compared to a 258?

Thanks in advanced for helping out the newbie :flipoff2:

As for the adapter, no adapter needed you just need to get a Bellhousing from an F series truck...Hey wait aminute!!!!!

I used to have a 89 Mustang with a 5.0. Excellent engine.
The 87-93 fuel injected 5.0 had roller lifters and were rated at 225 HP and 300 lb/ft torque at (I think)3200 rpm maybe slightly more.
The first few years 87-89 or 90 had forged pistons while the later ones had hypertectic? pistons. For high horsepower applications the forged are better but for Jeepin either is fine.
These engines will burn oil. I had around 135,000 miles on mine when I got rid of it. It still ran like a top but I had to put a quart of oil in about once a month.
My Tj gets around 16 mpg with 33's and 4.10's. My Mustang got slightly better than this. Usually around 18mpg with 3.73's and 26's. Both 5 speeds.
This is all Mustang info. I assume the Thunderbirds of these years used the exact same engine.
The 86's used a high swirl cylinder head which did not make as much power as the 87-93's.
These roller liftered motors run very well and run long. I would expect it to go 200,000 before a bore and new rings. Just be sure to check the oil very regularly. Good luck.
Oh yeah screw you Newbie :flipoff2:

The T Birds are not HO's.
You need to stick with the Mustang or Lincoln Mark VII to get the 5.0 HO.
89 or newer should have the mass air system instead of the speed density. The mass air is an easier system to modify for specific performance parameters
The 5.0 HO are very torquey, and they are great as a high performance Jeep engine.

Good point.
The mass air system reads the amount of air flowing through the mass air sensor before it reaches the engine and feeds this information to the computer. The computer then knows how much fuel should be released at the injectors.
When modifying the 5.0 (doing anything from air cleaner to ported heads), the mass air system is much better to have than the speed density system.
