: is a XJ a jeep

When I read some postings here, I have the feeling, some guys mean, a XJ is no Jeep, some people hate the XJ ! Why ?
Is only a CJ, a YJ or a TJ a Jeep ? I dont think so, I can do with my Jeep (XJ) all the things other Jeepers can do, who mean they have the real Jeep !

alot of the short-wheel base guys don't see XJs and ZJs as "real" jeeps, until they go wheelin with one :D

CheapXJ

they hate gettin outwheeled by a grocery getter, that's my guess.

Actually, it's mostly the guys with XJs with a chip on their shoulder that have this feeling:flipoff2:

Seriously though, most rivalries come from friendly banter. How you want to percieve it is up to you. Some folks can't get over themselves and have to put down whatever the other person is driving no matter what it is- XJ, ZJ, Toy, EB. I usually just bump those kind of folks off the trail "accidentally" :D

This is not a question for this board. I don't think anyone here has anything against XJ/ZJ/WJ's that are built to wheel. If they are just stock it's any other stock vehicle.

you can build a yugo to wheel with the best of em if you ahve the blood tears and dollars to donate to the project. like EasyXj said, people who believe the name on your hood has a whole lot to do with anything are fooling themselves...

I agree with weasel, xj 's are jeeps, my brother inlaw can go anywhere our cj's can go just fine, I just have a beef with people who think because they own a jeep (stock) and think they can go anywhere by them self and not need help. Then i find them tagging along with us and wanting our help to pull them through. Don't wheel by your self stock, its just not good practice.

I think most SWB guys talk a lot of shit till you drive dump bump, then it's like uhh...how did a grand cherokee with 31's do that and I can't with f and r lockers and 35's. They're just jealous, you see all these CJ5's and 7's stretched out to the exact wheelbase of an XJ or ZJ, funny stuff!

These are the kids in Atlanta that I spent the summer pulling out of power line roads. Doesn't matter to me what the body is, if you're set up enough to keep up, wheel what you want. If not, I'm more than glad to charge you to come pull your ass out. I've pulled out all kinds, stock is stock... I don't care what *J it is.

I own a competent CJ-7 and a built XJ.

I wheel both, the CJ for more hardcore trails and the XJ for open diffed "getting back to my roots" fun.

Lately I have noticed that the XJ is becoming more and more a trail rig and I'm thinking I need a newer daily driver. It doesn't help that a buddy keeps building his XJ more and more and leaves all his old stuff in my shop for me. Right now I have a Lock-right and some long arms to add to my DD XJ.

Here's the daily driver in action last weekend:

XJ is definetly a Jeep. I think most of the confusion comes from the fact that most XJers don't take their rigs off road and those that do think that they can go anywhere with a BB and 31" all-terrains. AN XJ CAN BE BUILT TO GO ANYWHERE A WRANGLER CAN, IMO the longer wheelbase is an advantage in many cases (ie dump bump).

Most people who wheel cherokees arn't very hardcore and are often times just taking it out to get a little dirt on it, but a stock cherokee can perform very well if drivin by a compitent off roader. This fact gives XJers a bad name becuase some dumbass who doesn't know what he is doing/getting into always gets his fawking XJ stuck on the trail and some SWB wanna be badass has to pull him out.

And besides if SWB rigs are really that much better why are all the CJ5 guys extending their wheelbase to 104"?!? IMO if XJ's came stock with a frame instead of a unibody they would be as good, if not better than a Wrangerl. I mean if you hunt you can get a stock XJ with a Dana 44 rear and a high pinon front Dana 30, both of which can handle up to 35" tires. I love my XJ and would never trade it for any other type of jeep, and besides I like being one of the few XJ's on the trail with 35's that can out wheel most SWB dumbasses who think that since they got a Wrangler they can go over any obsticle and tame any trail. Bah! :flipoff2:

Po' riggity
11-02-2002, 10:18 PM
I used to be one of those that thought the SWB jeeps were more capable than a LWB jeep or "grocery getter" Then I wheeled with one, and got my ass whooped. And since my "Jeep" has undergone a lot of mods, Ive learned you can't really classify a rig by what company made it. Especially not around here, where most of the rigs are branded by the sheetmetal surrounding them, but underneath the hood, and frame, the motor/running gear/axles is nothing that the factory ever offered. :D

I rolled my XJ about a year ago and have a TJ now. The XJ with 33's and a rear locker would climb stuff that my LA TJ with 35's and lockers front and rear wouldn't climb!:( There's no substitute for wheelbase... I'm stretching my TJ to 104" now.

There are pro's and cons to both. We now have an XJ and a TJ.
Obviously, the TJ is more versatile. Various tops and doors, on & off. Can't go topless in an XJ- well, not if ya wanna just put it back on real quick;) The TJ has a real frame, and if I roll it, chances are that it will still keep going. The second the XJ started to roll, I knew it was toast.
I liked the XJ for a daily driver and semi-serious wheeler.
The TJ is gonna be the serious toy, but still a DD also. Of course, either an XJ or a SWB jeep can be built to be serious, and that's what counts.

I know many people who have owned and trail ran XJ's.

They wear out the poor little XJ and get rid of it and buy something else.
Next thing you kno whtta person is replicating the XJ's wheelbase and suspension.
104" wheel base with coils up front and leafs in the rear.

So I guess a Scrambler or a Commanche is not a real Jeep either. I've seen a Scrambler and a XJ get it before. As a matter of fact when it came to climbing they are better in some ways than a wrangler. An XJ can be built to perform as well as almost any wrangler but has more space for a big beer cooler. You know trail necessities are a must.:flipoff2: Its just a different vehicle with a different line;)

A rig is how it is built, not what factory it rolled out of, or soem abstract idea of a "Jeep" Many jeeps have parts from fords, chevys, binders, and dodges, mogs, AM general 6x6's, and even sometimes thos infernal toyotas:flipoff2:all thrown in the mix to get the job done. Seriously, brand loyalty is cool, i guess, but this seems to be a pointless exercise in samantics. Build what you like, and call it WHAT EVER THE FAWK YOU WANT.
Oh, and for some xj tech, use a NP228 for a cheap SYE. Just weld up the center diff if it bothers you. make your own shifter'cause vacume shift is :rainbow: 228's are in early XJ's and late FSJ's. 229's have Viscous couplings, but are the same otherwise. if you never feel the need for real 4-hi, they are just as good. they hold up to a 360, should be enough for a 4.0, 2.5, or 2.8.
