: Boggers on an 80?

How will they be on the rocks? And how would they ride on the street as a DD?

On the rocks they'll kick ass, on the street as a daily driver, they will SUCK! Those are some rough-ridin' mofos, and the pavement will eat them up in no time.

If your truck is a daily driver that pulls wheeling duty, stay with radials...

I am running 305/70R16 SSRs on my 80. They are heavy and track like crap if they aren't balanced well. They perform great off on rocks and mud for a DD. I don't have any snow and ice experience with them yet. I would also consider some goodyear MT/Rs next time around.

A buddy of mine just put 35" boggers on his minitruck (82 or something)

Awesome offroad as mentioned, but while we were parked at the meeting place in the morning... he left them for about 10-15 minutes and they had flat spots already

So no, not a good DD tire

Yeah I must be losing it! Seven days without my cruiser must be affecting me!! LOL!!
But yeah I saw Brian Williams 80 with boggers so I thought they might be good. Did he have any problems with off camber stuff?
Mike I don't know what to do. Run 2 sets, 1 set, or no sets? What tire should I get aaahh!!! I'm so confused! Hey wait! I'm starting to sound like Old Man Don! Oh no!! Somebody help me!!

off camber with a set of boggers suck. get some sxs or some other radial mud tires. bias tires will suck on cold mornings. i think you should get two sets of tires. mike

i dont have a 80 but i do have 37 bogger on a light ass jeep last winter it got down to 40 f (cold for south texas) drove my jeep almost an 1hr before the flat spot got out after one night . the first 1-2 miles the wheel jumped so bad that i could not get over 20mph.... DD up north i dont think you could in the winter. also i have laid it on its side 2x due to them sliding off of "dusty" slick rock at angles:mad: great if your going straight but you got to cut them to get side traction:D that will kill them on the road the ssr work great had the on a 4runner dont last long thought if i had to do it again i would do sx love that side wall... o ya i do my fj 60 will ge them:D

Liftedwithleather, is yours that grey two-tone truck? I'm curious.

Didn't that kid from Colorado also run boggers at one point? I saw *two* FZJ80's running boggers at 'CM '01, I'm pretty sure of that.

If you only want one set, and you'll be daily driving, get some MT/R's. They work very well in New England.

Have any interest in some 38.7" Michelin XML ? ;-)

when I bought my tahoe, there were boggers on it...couldnt stand it for daily driving...loud, vibrates the crap out of the truck and sucked gas, I swear my mileage was the same or worse on the freeway than around town. Get some MTRs...BFG or GY...they are good tires

Michlin has a STEEL belted single ply sidewall, about 3/4" thick.... that TSL birdie looks badass, but I think the plump old Michelin man could take him to school.

But the thing is I drive 2-3 hours to the trail head most of the time. So I will be driving on the street with swampers alot anyways to just get to dirt and rocks. I surely don't want to trailer tires to the trail head.

Yes Brian Williams ran the 36" boggers. Now he has 38" claws on his 80. The boggers were so loud I could hear him coming down the road at least 2 blocks away. He passed my house daily on his way to work (before he moved away, :( ) and they made a sound of their own. With the claws he could actually sneak into my driveway before I heard him.

As far as wheeling, most of the stuff we did was wet, slime covered woods trails. They worked very well, and would climb ledges as good as any tire out there. He rarely got on rocks and as supple as his suspension was, off cambers were avoided as well. No body I run with has boogers anymore, lots of new choices that are better all around tires, of course we don't do mud bogs either.

Brian put a set of MTR's on his SD Powerstroke, not to loud, good traction in wet and snow, but they wear fast.

As far as your 1 set or 2, get some swampers and drive it! When they wear out, then buy the second set! Swampers are the best all around eastern tire if you do the woods trails. The thick sidewalls make all the difference, most the others are 3 ply and are easy to cut. I have 2 new MTR's with big slashes in them, and they can't be repaired. Still have the blue film on the sidewalls and mold nubs. Thats $300+ worth of junk! Yeah I know, shoulda bought em from Discount tire.........................

this is what you want to do!!

when you start shredding the radials start thinking about SXs, or SSRs

maybe a TSL bias, they street a lot better than the bogger, but they are both shocking compared to a radial

My 80 will be trying out 34x10.50x16s soon :D

I have a set of daily driver wheels/tires and a set of wheeling wheels and tires.

Now I just need to afford all the other crap I want hehe.

38.5x14.50 swampers, they worked well for this guy but I think he trailers mostly now.

That's Josh. He is in my club. He doesn't trailer =).

He runs those for wheeling and 33s for daily driver duty.

I dunno how you guys are all having so many problems with the MTR's. I've had mine on my 40 for 2 years with lots of hard wheeling and a good amount over sharp rocks. My 40 is my DD too. I haven't had ANY problems with my MTR's and I totally LOVE 'EM!

As for the 80. I've got some 35" MTR's on the 80 as well. LOVE 'EM on the 80 just as much as the 40. They're quiet (relatively) and great on the trail. Granted, not as aggressive as a swamper SX but seem to do well in the dirt and wet stuff and are awesome on the rocks. Mine have been on the 80 over a year with approx 15K miles and hardly show any wear at all.

I think the MTR's are the way to go if its a daily driver and you're gonna do some moderate/hard wheeling. I had some SSR's on the 80 for a while and although great on the trail, they were loud on the road. From my experience, the MTR's have performed at least as well on the trail and are quieter on the road.

Man I would love to fit 38.5 in Swampers under my 80. But I don't think they will fit. What would I need to do to get them to fit?

Those look like lower 2 to me.

I can't wait to get back either....my wife and I made our little one up there last year :).

To answer the 38.5s on an 80 question......it takes a big set of balls and a sawzall (I know the kid in the pic, that is what he used). :D

Yep, lower 2. I posted more photos in the Land Rover forum, we met Josh and his buddy on the trail...cool guys to wheel with. Mine is the white D90.

Johnathan,

I was in front of you on Lower 2 Sat., in the white FJ40. Sure was wet and slippery. Your D90 did well . I saw the pics on the Land Rover section, good pics.(let me know if you have more, we didn't take any)

The 38.5's worked well with the 80, maybe next time he'll bring some tools of his own. (bent a drag link)

On the tire issue, what about some 37" MTR's.

Paul,

Those are all the pics we got, sorry.

I agree on the 37 MTRs, I've got 35 MTRs and want the 37s. I talked to your buddy about his on the blue 40, he seems to like them on and off road.

Yo LasswithLeatherpanties.

I'd have to agree on the comment below .... it takes HUGE BALLS to run those meats.

Let me know when you take your truck up Lower 2. I will be there to watch then collect all your leftover parts for my truck.:flipoff2:

Just took delivery of 5 new MT/R 37s for my mini truck. Waiting on wheels and finishing up my Orbital Eye spring install(and attendant mods) and will report back. They sure look nice, my wife is pissed, I slept out in the yard on em last night, but oh weelll..

Hope to make it to GSMTR this year and nightride lower 2 again, see ya'll there maybe? I'll be the towing my truck there with my FJ62(super slowly) or my v8 FJ55 if I can finish it in time. First time to tow, always drove there, will be cool to not have to worry about breakage and driving home with a cobbled together rig.
