(Newbee) I have a question if you could help me on this i would be thankfull?
Mile Marker electric winches. I have seen that the earlier units had a faulty solenoid and MM corrected that issue. I was assured that all has been changed by the sales rep today.
He stated they now have a very solid competitive product with very low faliure returns
I guess its as solid as an electric planetary winch can get...
Any actual use feed back would be appreciated.
Thanks

Way too slow using a stock LR pump, and somewhat weak (I have seen two that stalled with moderate loads). And, hardly anyone on the trail knows how to switch the levers on the winch to make it work. So you have to get out and do it yourself in most cases.
Some have had good luck using an aux. hydraulic pump (very easy if you have a 200 or 300 Tdi:flipoff2: ). There is also a PTO hydraulic pump avail. for the LT230 that might work well.
Not worth the trouble in my opinion. Just buy an 8274 Warn.

Hello Dee,
A good PTO driven pump will smoke any electric winch under loaded conditions.   But you are going to pay $$ to get a good PTO install. The problem with most recreational hydraulic setups isn't with the winch, it is the pump. Milemarker had a good idea, but most power steering pumps are just too weak to do the job, and LR pumps are weaker than most. Even adding an extra ps pump will not do the job - they just are not designed for flow (but thare are some belt driven pumps that will work. The other issue with Milemarker are the solenoids that limit flow to something like 3.5 gpm. Most people worry about hydraulic pump output pressure, but flow is what you need to transfer energy with the hydraulic fluid and do work.
Now, the good news. :p GBR sells a Maxidrive PTO that bolts onto the back of the LT230 transfer case with a 40 series Cross pump (10 gpm) for ~$650.00 (bought mine two years ago). There are none of the mounting hassles that you get with a tranny driven PTO. Buy your winch, a good spool, hoses, a tank and a throttle vernier from Morse (need to have at least a 1000 rpm idle) and you are set. This is setup is like putting a 10 hp motor in the winch and you get the benifit of speed control over the winch instead of the "clonk its on, clonk its off" operation of a solenoid winch (standard Milemarker setup and all electric winches!). You can also buy cable operated remote controls for a lot of spools. I added a commercial intertech pulse proportional spool to my setup that gives you manual as well as full electonic remote control of the spool, but this will cost you $900.00 to replicate.
An even hotter setup is the Maxidrive hydraulic modification to the Warn 8274 winch. It is like adding a 17 hp (vice the weenie 4 hp electric motor) to the winch. :D Instead of a spool, Maxidrive uses a variable flow vane type motor - all closed loop setup - no tank. What I like about this setup is that the 8274 has a really nice free spool control and I still get confused with the :rainbow: Milemarker valves. I am seriously contemplating buying an 8274 and Maxidrive's adaptor and hydraulic motor. I just have more uses for the cash right now.
Even so, there are still issues with hydraulic winches. They do not work if the engine isn't running. And you must keep the fluid clean. And as Merv pointed out in the winch line length post, you can't drive and winch. This is not something I like to do anyway though so no big deal to me.

OOOPS your right, but why mess with a MM when you can get a WARN from B&T for the same $$?

No Guys I’m talking about the MM Electric winches the retail is from 399 to 699 for there 8k, plus as an added bonus some vendors are adding a free winch acc kit.
IMO it seems like a good entry level winch from light to medium use. Is anyone out there using the MM electrics?
Most of the Hard Core Trail Gods ive seen use the Ramsey worm types but there almost 3 times the cost, and like most im on a budget

seen a couple of them fail but they could have been part of that early batch. For a couple less dollars I wouldn't waste my time on the Mile Marker you'll probably be unhappy with the speed and I still am not convinced they have fixed the seloniods yet. Spend another 1-200 dollars and get a warn benandtwisted.com was having an amazing sale on warn 9000 (about the right size for 90s and discos and little light for rangies) So check that and you might be able to afford a better winch. Good luck on it man definately a good investment if you are going out alone.

Thanks all ill have to check it out more in depth....
Old Scout; I was not referring to Kyle just a generalization on my part. I can see it the DWeb post "Dee is over on Pirate talking shit about Kyle"
