: Do you Carry (spare tires)
FASTRNU 08-11-2010, 10:36 AM So I'm about to head out on a trip out west from Dallas and up the west coast to Washington across Wyoming and back down to TX.
I've never carried a spare tire and never had any problems. I run 37" Toyo Mud Terrains. Now that I'm getting closer to leaving I'm starting to think I might be pushing my luck all the years without having a flat.
My question is how many of you carry a spare and a full size spare or do people just carry some plugs.
I was thinking of buying another tire for a spare and wheel but by the time I spend that much $$$ I could by an air compressor and good patch kit ???
megadesertdiesel 08-11-2010, 10:48 AM you just never know what will happen. i carry a spare for my vehicles and two for my trailers, damn trailer tires always pop.
i have needed a tire for my tow vehicle due to a bad tire and it blew out at 75mph. scarry.
i have needed a tire on my toyhauler due to a road hazzard puncture, then had to drive 2 miles on a flat to find a spot to pull off. installed the spare and kept going to my destination. felt very unsure the rest of the trip not having a spare. so i bought an extra wheel and tire for two spares on my toyhauler and car hauler after that.
i also loaned out one of my spares to a friend that blew a tire and did not have a spare.
shit happens and you never know when, so boy scout up and take one with you.
dangerous toy 08-11-2010, 07:33 PM on the trail you can wire and plug a pretty messed up tire if youve got plugs and a good compressor, but for long highway miles you dont wanna be drivin on some half assed back together slashed sidewall. they do have youre tire at most of the les schwab tire places here in the pnw though, so you might be ok if you could limp it into town. :homer:

I guessed that most people would say that. It's good to know that I can find that tire pretty easily though. Thanks for your input.
chevy_man 08-13-2010, 07:25 AM For me it usually works out that if I have the feeling I should take one I'll need it. No sense not having one anyways.
Now, I've never had a flat with a E-rated truck tire, but I still carry a spare 24/7 because you just never know.
The Adam Blaster 08-13-2010, 08:47 AM I'd definitely carry a spare, especially that size.
What happens if you wreck one in a dinky little town with one mechanic shop and he doesn't stock 37" tires? Then you have to wait until he can bring one in, stay (and pay for) a night in a crappy motel, etc. etc...
I'd carry the spare. ;)

He meant do people carry spares because they feel that they need them. You carry two spares just because you enjoy buying tires so much. :flipoff2:
4x4e350 08-13-2010, 09:48 AM I made a tire carrier for the front tire in the back, and I have a spare for the rear in the side doors, I've only needed to use the rear spare once, and it was beyond repair. But yes, I carry spares.

yes i do enjoy buying tires, the best part is just hanging out at the tire shop for 2 hours waiting on the monkeys to monunt my tires.:clown:
bluejeep1 08-19-2010, 08:48 AM If you have the time and are not gunna hold up a line of other wheelers, an option is to build a repair kit made up of .....
-plugs, tubes and a section of an old tire to cover a major rip that is not plug-able
and leave the spare home
:smokin:
usmcdoc14 08-20-2010, 05:44 AM Yes. and I am also running hummer beadlocks so I can unmount and fix pretty much anything. I could also choose to carry just a spare tire with no rim if I wish.
I also carry a patch kit, plugs and a couple tire spoons.
How many of you carry tire spoons? :D great tool to have and also can be used to pry just about anything.
operose 08-20-2010, 06:41 AM Shit happens. Especially in the middle of fuck-off, nowhere.
We went to northern Maine and brought two spares... The closest thing for way too many miles was moose, and they wouldn't have been much help.

Ditto
mr67gp 08-23-2010, 08:05 AM Some of us actually carry TWO spares, depending on the destination and route. A bead breaker and spoons are also a good idea, or required if you are going to carry unmounted tires. Multi-piece rims are the best bet for very remote travel.
01Tundra 08-23-2010, 08:36 AM I always carry a spare and have had to use it on a couple occasions to get me home....carrying around the extra weight is worth it to me.
Filthy McChevy 08-25-2010, 06:32 PM I always have a spare, I seem to have bad luck and get more flats if I carry 2 spares, so I keep it at one.
Yota Up 08-25-2010, 09:00 PM I carry a spare, but it's 2" smaller than my other tires. Some folks say it might be a problem with the LSD, others think it's all good since it won't be there long.
1wd B-series 08-25-2010, 09:14 PM always do, and if i get a flat in the back one of the fronts gets rotated back and the spare goes up front (spares a diff size than the rest, and its a 2wd truck)
sandaddik2 08-25-2010, 09:32 PM at least find a cheap tire the same size you have thatll save $ even if its pretty worn out i always keep one of my old tires for a spare and throw the other 3 away.
DEEZLPWR 08-26-2010, 05:08 AM running with no spare is just stupid.
i have a full size spare onboard all the time. sometimes i dont feel thats enough but at least i have one.:shaking:
Albin 08-26-2010, 06:00 AM Two full size spares (35x12.50 BFG ATs) plus OBA plus a tire repair kit and probably a couple fix-a-flats - never leave home without it:

I had a 34x9 TSL that was the perfect "doughnut" spare  I kept that till I want up to 37's and got a full size one
