: backwards q-jet

I just got my rebuilt carb back from the local carb know-it-all. He says he did some internal mods to make it run better at angles, but to improve on even that I was planning on running it backwards. I have a stock manifold on a 350 and I don't want to invest too much money into this because I will eventually put the EFI on that I have sitting on the garage floor. Here's my quesitons:

Does anyone have any pics of their throttle linkage on a backwards q-jet? What did they do to make it work out right? I assume that I need to add some sort of additional lever on the opposite side of the carb from the original linkage and then connect them.

My manifold has round holes in the intake bore for the primaries and secondaries of the carb. If I flip the carb, the pimary holes are going to be under the secondary holes, and vice-versa. Does this matter? If so, what do people do to fix this? Should i just cut the holes out so that I have one big square bore? I'd prefer not to buy a new manifold, but if I need to, does anyone have one that would work that they are willing to let go cheap?

Thanks,

J. J.

Yeah, I searched. I obviously suck at it though. :p

I'm still confused as to what to do about my manifold.

Also, what throttle cable should I use for the 350 - Jeep conversion?

I can't say for your project, but I know the cable for an Astro Van is REALLY long and is available at any parts store. MY buddies use them on cabtrucks.

i remember that thread. he used a spreadbore adapter backwards on the manifold so the bigger secondaries would open in the small primary holes. dont know how it all sealed together but shouldn't be hard to do. hell i'm gonna give it a try real soon here.

anyone accually use this set-up yet? can you say if its worth it or not? :D

OK, one more time for the folks who don't read during the weekend.

That was me, and it works well!

I recently did some long hill climbs in loose dirt (read: near WOT) that would otherwise starve me of fuel, and she just pulled and pulled!!!

it doesn't like downhills as much anymore.. breakin my heart for sure.. it still has enough if I need to floor it to pull out of a endo.

I used the throttle cable from some sort of van... just browsed the parts store until I found a long one... the bracket is the same, just mounted around the front...

That'll work, or you can do this.

I don't get it. Why waste all the time and effort? especially if you intend to swap it out? My qjet will and does run even when I am rolled over (not up-side down) Where is the need? It crawls vertically fine.

Then yours is a far better q-jet than mine, as mine choked on steep hill climbs, and didn't like being on a real off-camber hill with the nose pointed up.

It works far better now.

There's just so much foam you can cram in the float bowl... the primaries still pull from the front.

And as for "why waste time & effort", 4-wheeling is not my only hobby... wrenching is, too... I enjoyed doing it!

Eskimo, so you just cut out the holes in your intake? I'm sorry if I'm being a dumbass. I'm still not following what you did.

And I am going carb for now because I can't afford all the sensors and chips for the EFI on my floor right now.

So I'm just thinking of cutting out the holes in my intake so that there is just one large opening to clear my secondaries. Think this will work?

My intake is an Edelbrock Performer, that is made for any carb.. the opening is shaped so a Holly 4-barrel OR a q-jet will fit...the rear opening is larger than the front. So, I used a generic q-jet adapter, turned it around, and ground the hell out of it, opening up the smaller area of the adapter (which is for the primaries) to match the secondaries opening on the intake.

It ran so-so without the grinding, but stumbled just off-idle.
