Would you buy a cherokee that has a screwdriver for a key?
I have been searching craigslist everyday for a couple of weeks now for a cherokee. One just popped up today. 1996 4x4 with the 4.0 litre engine. guy wants $475. says the only thing wrong with it is the steering column is messed up from "someone" trying to steel the car. The ignition works but it uses a screwdriver instead of a key.
Does this sound fishy? Price seems a little low as the rest of the cherokee appears to be in good shape. I guess as long as he has the title it is legit.
Depends...What size\type screwdriver?

I would, and I would also JB weld the screwdriver in place forever
and put a hidden key switch under the dash

Got any cop buddies? Maybe contact DMV with teh VIN first? If you get pulled over in it be ready to sit in a cop car for a little bit till they get it sorted out. :D

Good point, maybe I should ask if it is included in the sale or if I have to provide my own screwdriver.

I can start three cherokee's that i know of in my county with my worn down cherokee key :D
My first gen (81) toyota key opens and starts just about every other one i try :lmao:
Personally I would shy away from anything requiring a #4 phillips or a slide hammer in the back seat. That just reeks of bad juju.
Now a straightforward jumper situation,... I might consider as I feel the "previous owner" must be upstanding and chose not to destroy the ignition while acquiring the vehicle, and did not rail it before getting bored.
Either way, wish ya luck.
