: What did I find on the side of the road?

At work driving through my project this morning, something caught my eye. Someone had dumped 4 of these things in the woods off a side street near our jobsite.

I can't figure out what the hell they are. My first thought was some kind of wire spool like they use for big steel wire in production lines, but they look too well-made for a throw away-type thing. It appears to be DOM and they are fully notched and the welds looked pretty nice. They actually look like they took some pretty decent fab skills to bend fit.

So, WTF did I find?

Kinda makes sense.....although not really by the location where they were dumped.

They also looked like they were brand new. The on in the pic above had not started to rust yet....one or two of the others had some light surface rust on it. It looked like it still had lube from the bender on it.

BTW, I noticed an odd-shaped "road kill" on the shoulder this morning, and upon closer inspection it appears not to have been road kill at all. Rather, I think someone tossed a beef heart out on the shoulder

Whatever they are, put them in the back of your truck and go recycle them. There loss your gain even if it is only a couple bucks!

Ha! That was my first thought too....it just didn't make sense with the location.....although it does make sense that some tweeker stole 4 big spools of wire and dumped the racks after selling it for scrap.

Wire carrier is correct.
The company I work for make springs and wire forms. A lot of small diameter (<.150Ø) wire comes in on those.
Typically we pay a small deposit for them.

Dear Sir,

I have finished with the wire I purchased from you. I would like to return these racks and receive my deposit back. :flipoff2:

MY question is how in the hell can they scrap that much wire and not raise suspicion??

How far are you from El Paso?

Phelps Dodge used to have a wire mill there and those look just like the ones we used to pay copper and aluminum rod from.

They aren't only used for shipping, they are also used for handling large quantities of wire in the mill. They are pretty ubiquitous in the wire industry.

I'm in Dallas....this is right near the old Cowboys stadium. I can't think of any place very nearby that would use something like this.

Probably stolen across town and dumped here. It's a common place for the tweakers to strip their finds. I've seen them on our jobsite trying to load 3-ton balls of mangled scrap rebar on to a utility trailer.
