: Bedroom remodel almost done

I built the house 8 years ago and I skimped everywhere I could to keep cost down. The carpet was the cheapest 5 year stuff Lowes had, and the paint was a Walmart special in 5 gallon buckets. I had been building the place for 7 months and I just wanted it done. This meant that I was left living with rooms with little aesthetic value.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/void_of_light/before1.jpg

Never mind the possessed cat.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/void_of_light/before2.jpg

I got married last month and since we didn't need anything for the house we suggested Lowes gift cards. This gave us a good bit of the money needed to remodel.

So two fridays ago I came home, moved everything into the living room, cut the carpet and told the wife to pull it up while I mowed.

We spent the next week sanding and texturing the walls for paint.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/void_of_light/during.jpg

I put electrical boxes behind the tv and under the shelf that the xbox and Wii will it on. then started painting.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/void_of_light/walls.jpg

I built some shelves to go over the windows that also hold the curtain rod.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/void_of_light/shelf.jpg

and spent 3 days laying tile.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/void_of_light/almostdone.jpg

we have been sleeping in the living room for the last 2 weeks and finally got the bed back into the bedroom Saturday afternoon.

I still have a few pieces of trim to get nailed up and I need to change some outlets to match the cover plates. I will try and get finished pics tonight.

I thought the same thing.

Then I looked at the location, and thought "Hey, it's a good idea if you need to make the room feel cooler all the time, rather than warmer in the winter-months."

TILE in a bedroom?

I wasn't sure about it at first, but after pulling up the carpet and seeing just how nasty it had gotten I was convinced. We have a carpet cleaner, and use it regularly, but it was still horrible. We plan on getting some rugs to put down before winter.

Actually, watching TV and/or surfing the net late at night contributes to insomnia - because the light being emitted confuses your brain and makes you think it is daytime still.

At least, that is what I read in some recent study where they said that.

Looks good.....quick question:

Why did you lay the tile so that it doesn't run in line with the wall? I don't mean the tiles themselves but the pattern? The whole pattern is angled in the room....was that intentional?

Good to know, now I've got something I can semi-legitimately blame it on.

We don't have any carpet in the house - but the owner's did it because of dogs, not flooding.

Judging by the quick and cheap build mentioned in the first post, I am going to go with the wall that he started off of isn't square :flipoff2:

Same here - bathrooms are linoleum and tile, and all other living spaces are laminate flooring. As it is, we sweep/vac up about a chinchilla sized wad of hair every week in the house, and we have short haired dogs (coonhound and small lab mix).

We took up a shit ton of carpet literally the first day we "owned" the house, and never regretted it.

I don't know what hurts my eyes more, the overly-complex tile or the window treatment.

I don't think a chalk line was used. Maybe a crooked eyeball.

It's not all that uncommon down here. In fact, it's not really uncommon here to find whole houses tiled.

Our house is laminate, except for the kids/guest rooms. I want to rip the laminate out and tile the whole house, maybe leave laminate in the formal dining room.

I've even toyed with the idea of getting those rubber tiles for the kids' rooms.

I HATE carpet....

The tile is really crooked. That would drive me nuts. The shelf above the window looks crooked too, that would drive me even more nuts.

The TV and shelf need to be higher - but I really dig the shelf idea, looks clean...

Lastly - did you paint your fawking ceiling? THAT'S a first...

Props to you for building your own place. Now, take some of that money you got and buy a level and a chalk line.... :flipoff2:

The pattern makes it look that way. Every time the pattern repeats it moves over about 4 inches. The tile is laid at a 45 degree angle compared to the wall so when you walk in either door they are diamonds instead of squares. I don't know if I would do it again. Not because of the way the tile looks but because of all the cutting required. I think I have more cut tiles than whole ones.

:flipoff2: The walls are square. The house is a metal "kit" just like you get when you buy a red iron shop. There is no structural wood at all so it makes it real easy to build a room that is square.

Here is the kit I bought. http://www.kodiaksteelhomes.com/models/series.html?seriesid=19

Its all square the shelf looks crooked in the pics but its not.

I didn't paint the ceiling at first but it didn't look right. I don't think it would look good with a darker color but the lighter green turned out pretty good. in person the ceiling is the same color as the walls not darker like in the pic.

Here are the 99% finished pics.

I still need to change the outlets paint the AC register and do something to make the cat door look better.

The doors will eventually get changed out to something nicer.

The painted doors look weird to me. I would replace them with white 6 panel doors. I would also have the door casings, baseboards and chair rail white as well. I think the monochromatic paint scheme is too much. Break it up a little and I think it will look better. Oh, and hem those curtains, they are too long.

Damn I sound queer.

Good work man. I've done enought of my own remodels do know how much work there was there.

Props for doing your own theme, but...

1. The decor screams cheezy late 80's banquet hall. Pink, grey, modern, random star, non matching ceiling fan, shiny black flatpanel on the wall.

2. Way too complicated and loud for a bedroom. Bedroom should be serene and calming, not bold and geometric.

3. That tile would drive me nucking futs. I notice the smallest imperfections in the wood floor and it drives me insane... having a tile floor that was askew by 10% in the whole room would make me rip it out and do it over.

Sorry buddy, but this is a good example of what not to do to a house if you ever want to sell it.

Edit: OK, after the second set of pics, it looks a LOT better. The colors must have been really off when you took the first set.

I see what you are saying with the tile. It is straight, but it is an optical illusion. I think it would have probably looked better at a 90° than a 45° with that pattern.

I think it would look better if you added just a couple of decorative stars as design highlights, since you're in Texas.

Typically when you sell you should paint everything white anyway, because people want to pick their own colors. Moral of the story, paint your house whatever color you want.

I disagree, you want it fairly neutral but not white. White is very cold and doesn't look "homey".

Here was our dining room just after I finished the trim and paint. Similar green color scheme

I like the idea of a kit home, I'm going to do an envelope home that way... but the steel siding and roof on that site seem a little odd. It's bad enough when your truck rusts out, but the house?
