have a 97 jeep wrangler 4 cyl. the starter is bad so i need to replace it. the thing is i cant get the damn thing off. there are these 2 6 pt. star bolts on the bottom and they wont come loose. ne suggestions to gettin it off

If they are the star bolts just use a 12 point socket instead of a six point socket.

Shoot 'em with PB Blaster and let it soak for a while too

12 point socket and an impact wrench. PB Blaster is good too.

Seriously though....You cant get 2 bolts off to chagne a starter? Why do you even own a Jeep? You realize these things actually need to be WORKED on right? :rolleyes:

They're reverse torx bolts. Head for Autozone and pick up the reverse torx socket set. They'll come right out then.

:rolleyes: Great, another thin skinned newbie who probably mistakes a cresent wrench for an adjustable metric hammer. Do yourself a favor, and find the mission statement, then read it. Then do us a favor and lurk for a while to find out what this site is about. Dont let reading this site take away from the time you should spend reading your owners manual tho, it sounds like you need to study that fawker. Just to be helpful, please turn off your motor before attempting to remove starter.:flipoff2:

Oh man I wish you would have helped me this weekend :flipoff2: I got one bolt out fine and the other was a bitch. I stipped it and I couldn't even bang a smaller sockect on it good enough because of the hardness and taper of it. The biggest problem is the bolts go straight up and down and the starter has to go straight forward to clear the bell housing before it can drop down meaning even though you cut the head off of the bolt, you still can't get the starter out. Tried welding a nut on the end but there was a whole new set of problems much of it just clearance. Becasue of other clearance issues I couldn't even pry the starter enough so the bolt would just break. I ended up having to torch a good amount of the starter where the bolt goes through so it gave enough clearance to pry the starter so I could just break the bolt off, so I could drill and use an easy out on it.


Long story short
DO NOT STRIP IT OUT!

go to the store and get the right torx sockets for it and don't try to use 12 points on it.

im a huge newbie i gotz me a 93 jeep wrangler dropped on 20's with air bags.. chromed out with dice in the mirror.. hmm what else o ya shes got gold 20's too.. with spokes. and knock offs. i put a 465 tranny in her so i can strole down the street first gear with my huge 5-15's(subs) in the back slumpin it up! i droped the d60's front and rear out too so i can put them ice cream man axels in. keeps it lower to the ground.. i got gold pin striping on her.. adds around 77 hp. i run the ruby she takes me up da little sluce just fine. scrapes a lil but i hit the bags it jumps up it.. took my coil overs off too for the bags. the interior is all leopard skin pattern velvet.
ya im a proud member of "street rigs r us" i like my atlas || cuz u know my street rig has to be front wheel drive.
