Allllmost finished the new rig (if they ever are finished ;0) and got it out on the road for the first time yesterday. It's reeeeally awkward with the steering wheel up in yer face the way it is. Have a spare tilt column out back and would like to swap it in to get the wheel lower and further away from my teeth!

I know someone's done the swap and am surprized that I can't find one single article on the swap (even with google). I am only an alternator and brake proportioning valve away from the trail and getting impatient (it's been about a 9 month build) but if the column swap is not too big will do it before hitting the trail.

Question is, is ther a combination of jeep parts that'll slip the yj tilt column right in without too much custom mount work? The 74 has the column that goes steeply downward as opposed to the later cj setup. How intensive are the wiring issues for the signals?

If it's a one day event I'll do it now, if it's involved I'll put up with it in order to get this pig out on the trail :D

Thanks in advance folks.

I have done it in mine but I used the 76 and up pedals and wiring in the jeep when I built it. You can probaly? splice the wiring from the old signal to the new easy, but the tilt uses the switch on the lower part of the tube.

Thanks odee, gonna see if I can't do it without swapping pedal assemblies. It's at a buddy's shop right now. Will take the column I have over there this weekend and see what we can fab up. If no go, then we'll raise the seat a bit I guess. Either way it's hitting the trail this weekend:D

I have done this swap also in my 72cj5. I used a stock column/pedals from an 84 cj7. It was a little intensive cause they go at 2 different angles. The mounting for the column is also different. It isn't hard just takes a little time. I simply cut a new hole filled the other and made some spacers to accomidate the mounting angle. As for wiring I needed a complete harness anyway so I ordered one for an 84. I hope that helps some.
