: Tellico pics(lower 2)
Jtisdale 10-27-2002, 02:48 PM After everyone else came up with a good excuse not to go, John and I went to Tellico in the rain. He had never been there so I thought lower 2 would be a good initiation trail, .8 of a mile and several hours later he agreed! We met up with some toyota guys, the 80 is on 38.5s and the 40 has 37s...80 birfields are strong after the abuse we saw these take. John broke his RR CV setup and the fuse stub wasn't the weak link(I'm sure he'll give details, but it looked like the bell went first).

looks like fun.
What's that like 3500 miles from CA:(
untrakdrover 10-27-2002, 09:54 PM I second the fact that it indeed looks as if you guys had a good time! I am very interested to hear of John's cv woes and how hes plans to address them in the near future!
RoverWrench 10-28-2002, 09:03 AM Lower 2 was quite the initiation trail to say the least....I have to say its all anyone may want on a rainy day. With the 6000 lb "small truck" running with the trailor rigs, I was quite excited to run that trail with no body damage and only winching at the same winch points as the "big boys" did. The grenaded cv is really not understood at this point. It blew on the first small rock garden we got to on wet smaller rocks while simply manuvering to ease up in a straight line. It blew to easily. Replaced with the same set-up and finished the run in all the hard stuff with no problem mostly locked the whole time. The bell blew leaving the star and half shaft intact. I feel I need to continue to run this to get a better feel for the strenght issues. If I changed right now I would simply add the old 110 cv's with the GBR drive flanges, the same as Tisdales set-up, as that is the only difference in our front end....but I am not convinced what the limits on this rangie set up is yet. If I had to guess, the straight lines encountered on the course 10 splines for the drive flange was the weak point causing the bell to let go......but why so easily on the first obsticle is not understood especially when the same set-up ran the rest of the most difficult part. But all in all, running the lower 2 made the 10 hr haul worth while.

Something like that. I tell ya what, you get a group together to come hit Tellico with us and I'll get a group together to make the trip out to hit the hammers with you guys.

Blech, as in ich!, or EWWW!
Generally used by joe cool/snoopy on the peanuts and kids everywhere.
As in: "that is most certainly a reason to stay here in Colorado where it is nice and fawkin DRY!"

JSBriggs 10-28-2002, 01:03 PM Looks cold and wet....I like it! I am actually missing Oregon type weather since moving to CA.
Hoping for rain soon! (although sun is nice too! :D )
Just an observation, but it looke like you have the early RR type "floating" cv that has internal splines on the bell w/the outter axel cast as part of the drive flange. Anyone know if those are weaker then the others?

I would doubt that the failure came from the 10 spline stub. It would have failed from the bell cracking from the big open end. This failure would be the same as any rover CV bell failure IMO. Lots of guys here run the rangie cvs (with 10 spline stub) and they still break the CVs and sometimes the 10 spline stub. I think that if the CV is brand new (no fatigue cracks) then it will break the stock 10 spline stub. Spoke to Maxi ages ago and he was making hytuf 10 spline stubs for a Rangie (winch challenge competition rig - lots of mud, loose climbs and they drive using heaps of throttle and not much gearing - really hard on CVs) and what they found was that a new cv would twist the hytuf 10 spline outer. So that every new comp they would use new CVs so they knew they were not fatigued and they could run very hard and not break. They previously ran 110 CV and found the that new Rangie CV worked better (and the Rangie CVs were cheap to by)
I think that a longfielded Rangie CV (10 spline stub) would work awesome and would only break the outer stub axle cause the CV wouldnt fatigue.

RoverWrench 10-28-2002, 02:29 PM I do believe what you say SR.....My next thing is to longfield these RR cv's...I just dont know if once the treatment is put on will the CV still function thru out its range of travel without binding in the swivel ball. The cv's and stubs I was using were new, but the stub survived somewhat scarred and the bell shattered....So I take it you are saying you can longfield them and they still operate properly in the swivel ball???
J bradley 10-28-2002, 02:34 PM No body damage ?!?! That is some sweet steering on your part Rover Wrench . That is one evil trail...Your sliders must have gotten a good work out.. That is a great misty shot of the d-90 and 80..
I gave up on the rover..... it has had all the sweet licked-off of it and needs serious attention. No time or $$ right now so I will park it for a few months and focus on the mercedes wagon which browned-out 1 hour into the trip to Tellico friday... I was looking forward to the drive in on trail #1 in the wagon too.. I even packed my high lift and some straps...
let us know if there are other pics out there...

CTA586 10-28-2002, 02:44 PM Some of the better pics of Tellico Ive seen. No fawkin around on that trail! Well done guys.
Strange Rover 10-28-2002, 02:45 PM mmm, thats interesting that the cvs were new and they failed so easily???
I do think that a longfielded CV will still fit. I have seen a longfielded toy cv and the ring is welded onto the back of the bell and is at a smaller diameter than the OD of the bell so that the ring is within the "swing radius"of the origional bell.
Sam
RoverWrench 10-28-2002, 03:05 PM Then I will get a set longfielded....I feel this is a cheaper alternative once set up for running 33" to 35" tire sizes, esp since you want to also buy and carry spare parts. Of course you wont have ABS with the set-up, but I did away with my ABS a while back...too damn scary.
GRNRVR 10-28-2002, 03:24 PM Damn guys that looks like it was a great time.. I would probably still be out there picking up the litter that was my Disco after running that trail.. I still would have loved to go though. Beats my weekend at the beach and the flu that I now have from me being an idiot on Friday night.
Looks cold and wet....I like it!
I prefer warm and wet. With big (o)(o) perfect breasts. Tend to find ( ^)( ^) cold breasts on the cold and wet ones...:flipoff2:
Fear Factory 10-28-2002, 06:26 PM Looks pretty fun Tis, I'll be out someday. Looks like a nice mix between mud and rocks, better get my new sliders made first. Some 37" boggers may not hurt either. I'll have to get Way with his witch's tit harem out there too.
spalding 10-28-2002, 11:00 PM by any chance does anybody know the 80 owners name or have an email address for him? thanks.
Jtisdale 10-29-2002, 06:25 AM Guy's name was Josh, I posted a pic of his rig on the cruiser board(boggers on an 80 thread) and one of the guys knew him from their club. Sorry thats all I've got.
CTA586 10-29-2002, 02:39 PM Kyle-
I'd love to know how your going to out-do yourself on those sliders
Tweaking the suspension anymore to get 37s under there?

C'mon Kyle get your KC crew out here! I don't know about Way's boobie voodo though. Does that mean I can have your 36's?
