: Cheap modular cargo rack option
usmcdoc14 08-23-2010, 04:27 PM I am going to be driving my 4 door jeep JK across the country when I get back from this deployment so I figured some issues. One being storage and the ability to still have a back seat when I feel like sleeping. So I wanted a roof rack.
I figured the mounting as that was quite simple, when I had the windshield/light/roll bar made I knew I was going to use it eventually for a rack so I welded on tabs in advance. I also knew I was going to use the B pillar for an external tab, that done I was trying to figure what the fawk to do for a rack
Well while at Harbor Freight picking up step drills I saw item # 67623 150 Lb. Capacity ATV Cargo Carrier
And it hit me

its fawking modular :bounce: you have the center receiver tube and the 2 side "racks" that you can either bolt or weld together in multiple configurations.
and the PRICE !! $39 without the 20% off coupon. So for like $65 I picked up 2 of them. that gives me 4 "half racks" to work with.
So I arraigned them to fit the front half of my JK the best and welded them together (you could easily bolt them together)

You can see here how using the included C shaped channel you can gap the curved sections to make it squared up.

The cross bar is just some square tube welded on, once again it could easily be bolted or clamped.

B pillar mounts. the rack comes right off and the mounts are intentionally made overkill. also they are not the furthest thing sticking out, the door hinges stick out further and beyond that is the rock rails so I am not worried of hiting them on anything.
and even if I did they are not moving

So now I have a removable rack for camping and shit :D And I could not even have picked up the steel to make it for the cost.
Muddy Oval 08-23-2010, 05:31 PM That turned out sweet! I might have to use this intel to make something for my trailer.
usmcdoc14 08-23-2010, 05:46 PM That turned out sweet! I might have to use this intel to make something for my trailer.
I think I have $100 total in that rack  I saw them and was like "$39.95?!!?? is that right?.....I have a bunch of 20% off coupons and its STEEL.....I can not buy the tube for that price"
there is so many single or double or even quad combination that you can do with them for so much less than getting a "pre made" one. Over tire basket, inside cargo area basket, whatever.
Greatlakeoffroad 08-24-2010, 03:40 AM Sweet rig, way to use your noggin!
wheelerfreak 08-24-2010, 12:03 PM I bought that same rack at HF for the same reason, it was cheap. The first time out it bent width wise with about 75# in it. That was off road use over bumpy trails and washboards, not highway, and also in the reciever mount. I would suggest using some angle iron to beef it up between the mounting points along the sides at the least. I'm gonna straighten it out and weld up some angle to keep that from hapeening again.
Somewhat off topic, what route are you gonna take cross country? Is it gonna be a vacation or just getting back to the East coast? I did a similar type trip when I came back and found some pretty awesome camping sites along the way.
Filthy McChevy 08-25-2010, 06:29 PM Nice execution, although I must say, I like receiver racks mounted back where they are designed for, out of the windstream.

where exactly did yours bend? you mean at the "middle" where it attaches to the receiver hitch part?
I will be going to the west coast for school next year some time, and then hopefully back here after that

Its out of the wind stream  what do you think the big ass lights are for? to block the wind over the jeep :flipoff2:
It got sorta tested this past week as I had to haul all my shit from DC to VA. I had it loaded with maybe 150lbs of pelican cased gear and I did not even notice it being there. Next will be some more abuse, I may machine the B pillar mounts out of aluminum when I get back just cause it would look cooler

Yup, that's where it bent. I would have thought that the piece of u channel that bolts to the rails would have kept it from bending but it didn't. I'm gonna weld angle like I siad and then it should be good to go.

:
This is one of the configurations of receiver racks I use, No lights are gonna work for wind blockage, takes a whole vehicle.:flipoff2:

gp_frk 09-10-2010, 08:22 AM Doc you suck and thanks!
After reading this thread I googled the part number you provided looking for dimensions. I found them (couldn't find the rack listed on HF.com). I then went out and measured the interior of my cage on the 4runner.
PERFECT fit!
So I printed out a 20% off coupon from the shop and tools forum and hit up HF last Friday, 35.00 later I came home with my cargo rack (best part was the dude that got it out of the "warehouse" for me going "you know this is for an ATV right?" LOL)
So i came home and bolted the bitch together and slapped it between my uprights and took some measurements, called up a buddy to see if he had any 3/4" square tube left lying around (which he did :grinpimp:) and got to work.
My next thought was how do I mount this bitch without spending a buttload at polyperformance. So off to google I went again and I found these.
http://www.drillspot.com/products/362079/Caddy_454008_Pipe_Clamp
Purchased 4 of them and they arrived on Wednesday.
Now onto the pics
3/8" x 1-1/4" corse thread bolt tightened down perfectly on the 3/4" tube.

Ignore the wingnut its my hi-lift mount

Sorry for the dark ass pics. I obviously still need to drill the new holes for the C channel on the back of the upright.
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g293/gp_frk/IMG00811.jpg
I will be stitch welding the 3/4" square tube to the bottom side of the outer runners on the rack and calling it good.
gp_frk 11-16-2010, 08:04 AM Well I finally finished this project last night.
I decided that the hi-lift mount ate up space I wanted for a cooler so I made on on the back of the rack. Mounts are all 1/8" steel. The rack is welded to some 3/4" x 3/4" square tube.

usmcdoc14 11-16-2010, 08:14 AM I like the dimpled mounts.
When I get home I have some little improvements I want to make, mainly milling the body mounts out of solid aluminum.

Sabre 07 11-24-2010, 04:51 PM GP FRK,
How are the clamps doing holding onto the tube under load? Any slippage? I have the same need on my Iz.
ReggieRay 11-28-2010, 04:09 PM I like how it turned out, went to HF today and bought two of these. Hopefully it turns out as good as yours did.

I rode with him this weekend. The rack hasn't moved.
gp_frk 11-28-2010, 05:53 PM I will say I should have bought the next size down. I have them as tight as possible and they are the same size as the OD. Had I gone the next size down I could have cinched them up really tight

What does HF call 'em? I just did a pipe clamp search and got nothing. Thanks.

HF doesnt sell the pipe clamps. i bought them from the Drillspot link in the original post I made. I think grainger carries them as well.
Sabre 07 11-29-2010, 03:56 PM Tracking on your original post, Reggie Ray said different.

That's because I'm retarded and should have quoted the original post. I meant I bought two of these racks from HF. Sorry for the confusion.
aaronkeiser 12-26-2010, 11:25 PM This kind of gives me an idea for a spare tire rack....hmmmm:question:
thecarman 01-21-2011, 07:26 PM What is the width measurement on these racks? Harbor Freight website says:
48-3/4" L x 32" W x 7-3/4" H
Is it 48-3/4-inches wide, or 32-inches wide? I can't figure out what they would call "length" vs. "width".
48-3/4-inches would be good in proportion to the width of my wife's vehicle, and that's what it looks like it would be judging by the pic on that JK, but I want to make sure before I drive 45 min to Harbor Freight... :)
Thanks!
