: Relocated fill/check plug on d300?

OK I clocked my d300 and filled it with 2 quarts of gear oil.
(think thats the right amount)

Got to thinking that it would be nice to have the plug in the right place now that it is actually sitting level.

I'm one of those guys that likes to check gear oil levels and stuff.

I know if its not leaking it shouldnt drop alot but call me paranoid, I'd liek to figure out a way to locate a new fill plug, or a sight glass.

I can actually do these things...I'm just not good at figuring out where to locate it.
FWIW I have a spare 300 sitting here I could tinker with as well.

Anyone done this?
Anyone have any serious suggestions on how to figure out where to locate the hole? :D
Or am I just paranoid and I should just forget about it and change the fluid more often to be sure its alright?

Thanks in advance.

I bet if I was giving away a free winch I'd get more replies. ;) :flipoff2:

What about drilling and tapping a couple holes for fittings to do a sight tube like on the Atlas?

HOw much did you clock this thing?
Don;t know where the fill plug is on a D300 but why not just tip the jeep up and fill the 300? Fill it until the oil is 1/4 of the way up the highest bearing when on horizontal ground.

Sorry can't help much about your hole:eek:

Cheg its clocked flat...I would have to put the jeep at roughly a 45 degree angle to duplicate the stock position. (Maybe less but ya know...)

Yeah...fill it til its 1/4 way up the bearings....and I would know that amount how? Not being a wise ass...just dont know how to figure it out.

Sight glass....yeah I guess I could do that....fill it with 2 quarts and mark it...seems like the easiest way....

Anyone else have an brilliant ideas?

Thanks.

Yeah. Torch a slot in the side, and put some of your handy-dandy clear packing tape over it. Whammo! Instant sight glass. :flipoff2:

Let me think about it. BHT will come up with something.... i smell a new product on the horizon...

Something else I just thought of, is the 2 quarts the capacity listed for the 300? (Can't remember how much I put in last time and don't have my Haynes manual handy) Cause wouldn't the fluid capacity have less to do with the size of the case and more to do with being deep enough to keep the bearings washed, so might it need more or less now that its flat?

A Maniac on the board:flipoff2: I used to go sledding in Caribou and FT Kent when I was younger and wilder, lots of stretches to see triple digits! Although GPS would likely have been double digits:(

I researched the chit out of this when I first offered my clocking kits a few yrs ago. 2 QT's is the right amount (specified) and your t-case should actually lube better as the lube does not have to splash uphill as much as the original install.

Add much more and it will find its way out the seals.

You can get warm fuzzies just by removing the bolts that hold the front output cover on the back side. After just putting the 2 qts in you can get a rough idea that the level is above one bolt and below the other. From here you can determine the actual level with a bent paperclip or do a one time messy removal with your spare at the same angle on the floor- you'll see on the inside of the cover what the level was.

Now you can drill and tap a 1/8 pipe thread and use this as a sight plug, filling from the original hole. If you're more ambitious drill two holes on either side and put in the site tube like the atlas. Good luck!

Since you have a spare 300 on the bench and you know that you should be at 1/4 of the highest bearing, it seems to me you know where to put the check bolt.

The bummer part would be removing the case, draining it, drilling it, taping is, cleaning it, replacing it and filling it. Seems like a lot of work, but you could make a drain and a fill at the same time.

Go2Guy,
You don’t make the ring anymore? Did you sell the rights to someone? Is it possible to still get one? If not, could I get a drawing so I can get one made or should I just re-drill my adapter? Dang, I’d hate to screw that up.

I still make them, just have a few copy cats but that's life- not worth doing a patent as it's too easy to get around it on something like that.

I just try to be competitive and give the best service i can. Pm me and I'll hook you up when you're ready. Daddy needs a new set of portal axles:D

I just stick my little finger through the hole and down.
When the tip of my finger touches the oil level ... it's full!
But, then again, ya'll probably have fat fingers ... :flipoff2:

My clocked D300 using a Go2Guy ring ...

... some have mentioned using the upper left bolt hole on the rectangular shaft/bearing plate (visable in pic) as the new oil level indicator hole. (about the same level as the two last joints of my little finger ) ;)
