Here is a couple of links to extended CJ-5 called Rock Taxi.

http://www.rockcrawler.com/readersrides/showcase/november01/index.asp

http://www.rocktaxi.com/RocktaxiStart.html

How about providing more detailed on how you stretched and what type of suspension you are using. I am really interested in the whole issue of CJ-5 stretching.

It seems to me the easiest way to stretch wheelbase is use coilovers and move the front axle forward and 1/4 elleptic or coilovers in the rear and move the axle back. Would also give great approach angles. A really good professional fabricator in Phoenix told me that quarter elleptics work best on light vehicles but he didn't tell me what light means. What is light?

i am not worried about the frame i am using a toyota 4x4 frame i was thinking about cutting out the fire walland mating two of the cowls togather and cutting out the door opening and and welding in an extra section should give me an extra 18 in or so i have a coupple of extra tubs to steal sheet metal from i want to keep enough metal not to get harrased by the chp and not have frame hanging out the rear thats my thought for now

Windrock....sheeshhh... don't remind me..... Windrock was its maiden voyage from building it up from stock.... I was pretty disheartened afterwards but then realized that I had accomplished exactly what I had wanted to do... (find the weak links)
The main problem... motor mounts, I solved by fab'ing up some solid ones...., scrapped the carb (installed a GM TBI), installed a new spring, (drilled both front center pins out to 3/8), fixed the driveshaft, and stocked up on plenty of spare parts, oil filters, hyd clutch lines & fittings, etc.....
I went to Tellico two weeks after Windrock and kicked butt....

Holloween Ride... We had rode that Morning at Paynes Cove, and the guy with me,, (big Green TJ) had to be at work at 5:00am the next morning (resident Trauma Surgeon at Vandy), so we ended up turning around after waiting about a hour at the base of the first part of the trail, we were at the end of the line and it looked like it would be along time before we got a chance to head up....

even though i lengthened mine by cutting the body and frame and adding in to lengthen it i would not do it again. i would do like all of the people who just move the front forward and the rear way back. even if you add to the cowl like you say you are adding sheet metal. sheetmetal just gets in the way on a trail rig so why add more? this is exactly why i don't like mine. if i was going to add sheet metal i'd do it like i did it because atleast you get more room inside the rig. with a longer cowl all you get is more of an eng bay. anyway take it for what it is worth.

Richards Tj is stretched 10" in the cowl. Besides getting to use a normal top this also alows you to keep the motor over the tires instead of trying to drag it up with the rear. You would be amazed what all you can store on the firewall if you have the room.

Front end has a complete Warn XCL kit, the rear is using the XCL coil overs with some custom frame work to mount it off of, and the gas tank was removed and is now a fuel cell where the rear seat used to be. The door openings are unchanged and the where the tub was cut to accomodate the new wheelbase, the cutouts were swapped to the opposite side to fill in the old wheel openings. Its at the shop right now getting painted up but it works pretty bitchin. Same wheelbase as a TJ but no rear overhang :D

Nice.

Do you have a pix from the side. So you had about a 10" stretch. Did you make all 10" in the rear? Or did you move the front axle forward also?

So actually you didn't lengthen the tub? You used what was cutout from the rear of the wheel well openings to fill in the front of the wheel well openings. Is that correct?

Some of those are sweet.

How do you handle steering when you lengthen the front that much? I assume once the axle is bolted in, bolt the box to the frame in the appropriate spot and get a long custom shaft?

how does his design allow him to keep the motor over the front axle any better than if he (sunray) would not have added 10" to the cowl? the grill and fender location is still set so the motor can not be moved any further forward than one that was not lengthend at the cowl. anyway.....

You can see that all the wheelbase stretch occured at the rear and that the tub was not stretched. You are correct on what was done with the cut-outs. The front was not changed after the initial install of the D44 with the Warn XCL conversion.

FWIW, this Jeep runs a 383 stroker with a TH350/D300 with a 4:1 and 4:27's in the diffs on 35" Claws. We've had it out and it works pretty good :D

I spent about 4 hours on saturday working on my cj7 tub.
while looking at the cowl/firewall area, I cannot figure out how to
"only" strech the cowl portion, without affecting the firewall/hood
mounting area as well....

if you were to "add" a filler strip between the hood-hinge point,
and the radii from the cowl going into the engine compartment,
(leaving the firewall alone) it would very hard to blend the
newly-added filler strip into the existing cowl sheetmetal, while
keeping the stock radii on the end of the cowl sheetmetal intact.

is that too complicated of a question/explanation?

I think it would actually be easier to move the whole firewall forward during the cowl stretch, be adding the cowl filler-strip
between the hood-mounting holes in the cowl, and the fresh-air
opening in the cowl. but, by doing that, you start messing with
the stock heater/airbox assembly.. they would now both be 6"
off........ plastic airbox extensions?

what a lot of work just to move the fornt axle 6" ahead, and retain a "stock" tire/wheel placement..............

--sherpa

still looking for alternative solutions..........

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you but here they are:

38" from block to output shaft. TH350 and a "short shaft" style D300 x-fer case.

So, without moving the axle back you would have a 10.5" driveshaft.

BTW, I've got the short-shaft D300 also.

Here is my buddies CJ-5 at 107'' WB. It has been streched in more that one way. The rear has been pulled back and the front pushed forward with a Cj-7 hood and hand made tube fenders. But we also stretched the interior. we cut out the fender wells to make more room for your legs.

Not sure of a build thread, but I know the guy that did all the work. His name is Travis Wilson at Wilson Performance and Offroad in Dayton, TN. He built the cage on my CJ5 and is going to do more work on it later. He does great work.

I am right around 110" with a 22" body stretch and FJ40 springs spun toward the ends.

All I keep saying is......f#ck, that sucks.

Sorry to hijack, but the Excursion was a loss, the trailer got new axles and the Jeep is currently being put back together. I had to rebuild the cage and get a new hood, grill, windshield, and radiator. It has been a year since, but it will be back on the road within the month. The body has its issues, but it is a crawler and will still kick ass!

Yes, my boy was with us in the Ex. Both of the pics (Moab and Montrose) were taken on the same trip and the accident happened on the way home!

All were fine in the accident, and my boy did not get a scratch or have any nightmares after. Thanks for asking.

Hijack over!

ive got a 67 CJ5 which is undergoing the stretch now by 29'' to a wb of 110''.

its also split down the middle and widened 5''(grill now has 9 slots instead of 7). front wheels kicked forward 9'', door extended 10'', & another 8'' btwn the door and rear wheel cutout. its on 38'' tires. im aiming for a "what-if-jeep-did-a-factory-fullsize-like-the-Rescue-concept-back-in-67" look.

A customer recently brought me this CJ with both a body and frame stretch. He needed a ton of work including crossover steering, tilt steering column with working GM factory ignition/signals, removable steering wheel, aluminum roof, a few extra bars in the cage and a whole lot more haha. It will be back next week so I'll get some more detailed pics.
