I have been searching for info on turbo charging my xj, iv come across 2 or 3 decent threads but alot of those guys doing the builds use alot of terms that people starting to research wouldnt understand like me. so instead of asking you to tell me what i need exactly i was hoping that people who know a bit about it could chime in and post some helpful info for everyone as far as turbos and what you need to make it work like map sensors, injectors ect. i did search in the totm and totw and the turbo link in there leads to only one guys build thread. anymore than 5 posts flaming the idea of making a useful thread and ill just delete it, if theres already a thread like this that i missed please post the link:smokin:

i think itd help but i think its doable without one. im going low budget here

since i have a turbo sitting in the garage i need to learn how to set it up,
im sure i need injectors, i know theres ones you can buy new but iv also heard various fords and chevys have injectors that would be considered an upgrade but never found what cars specifically to take them off of. im not very familiar with injectors do they have to be specific or are injectors sort of universal?
i guess im an injector tech noob:homer:

Do you at least know what EGT means and why it is important?

Bryson's setup is the cleanest I've seen. Here's his build thread (http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1031285) on NAXJA.

I won't knock you for trying to do this on your own, but if you try to hack it together, it's going to perform like a hacked together system. You might be able to adapt your own manifold, but it's not going to fit as cleanly as how he did it either. Good luck and be sure to post pics of the final product.

exhaust gas temperature and you use a pyrometer to keep an eye on it is what i think it is and i forget what happens when it gets too hot exactly but i do know that if it gets too hot your not going to drive home:homer:

iv been picking my dads brain about it too. he knows quite a bit about turbos, he put one on his buick motor in his willys jeep, but i like to figure things out on my own and i figured the pbb is the best source for this kind of info so i wanted to see what you guys have to say also and hoping to leave a thread with a little info for the next guy to turbo his engine.

you could try using a TJ header, I believe those are designed wrap around the front of the oil pan so you could get the exhaust routed to the passenger side for more room.

Good start, I guess. Make sure you size your injectors so that they don't get run beyond 80% duty cycle for flow. Another important term: stoichiometric.

Unless you have unlimited time and money, talk to your Dad more.

He wasn't born knowing it, neither were you or anybody else. No shame in asking, unless he's an asshole. Then ask someone else.

my dad has alot of knowledge with turbos but his experience is more towards carbureted engines.
most of the principles are the same to use exhaust to spin the fins in the turbo to suck in more air and repeat.
and no my dads not an ass hes just busy all the time:flipoff2:

one thing i was wondering was what injectors would be an upgrade for the 4.0L
iv heard people mention it when i was searching but what jy cars can i go pull em out of?

Doable w/o one? I assume you're going to try to weld a flange on your current manifold then? You think xj manifolds crack easy...wait til you hang a turbo on it :shaking:

I have seen them mounted up under the floor board. Which has a few added benefits like cooler under hood temps and the air coming off the turbo has some time to cool off before being inducted to the motor. Crossing water would be a big no-no with a setup like this.

iv seen it done in threads without an $800 manifold and your a moron if you think im going to "hang a fucking turbo off of it" theres these neat things called mounting brackets to mount the turbo so it doesnt hang off of it. if i was a yuppy who lived at the beach like you then maybe id pay full price for all the brand name stuff and have someone make if for me but im on a budget:flipoff2:

yeah id put it where the stock air box is and run a snorkel cuz my xj sees water about once a week down at the spill-way 5 miles from my house

thanks for the link asp87

I just read that you can use the injectors off of a 5.0 mustang. can someone confirm that and if so are there specific years?

Just a heads up here guys:

- the topic of turbocharging a 4.0L has been beat to death on this website. Anything and everything you need to know is within your grasp, providing you can find the search button, including detailed pictures of installs on XJs.

- No, you don't need a $800 manifold - it would be a huge waste of cash.

- Yes 5.0L injectors work fine. *hint* use ones from a 5.0L that look just like the ones under your hood - yes they plug right in

seriously, please search. Tuesday draws closer and this thread is still alive....

...A little late here, but I thought I'd just add to the thread.

While our turbo manifold isn't exactly "required" to turbo your Cherokee, it makes it SO much easier, while giving you the peice of mind with our life-time warranty (not that you'll ever need it). The manifold is built to last, unlike your typical sheetmetal headers...

Thick Stainless 304L Schedule 40 pipe... Almost 3/16" thick.

If your looking to do it yourself, just keep in mind turboing a XJ 4.0 isn't at all the same as turboing a TJ 4.0L. ;) Also don't discount the importance of proper tuning.

I used to comunicate with CS quite a bit when we were more into the Honda Scene.
