: What will it take for 38.5's
SunsetOrange 10-27-2002, 08:07 PM What lift exactly would it take. I'm gonna try and run full width axles with 38.5 inch swampers. I'm gonna do a SOA and fender trimming only. Will it work pretty will. Will it flex good with J-10 springs in the front and YJ springs in the rear. Your input would be very helpful. Its a 86 CJ-7.
I also plan on doing a hy-steer. Can I do it all my self. Like the drilling and all that.
Thank you for your help.

Since I do more searching than posting, I guess I can quote most on here and say:
"USE THE SEARCH BUTTON!!!" :flipoff2:
Here's 27 posts on "full width"
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=309367&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending
You might find a few more using "SOA".
I'm sure the experienced flamers will have more fun. :D
Oh and my guess is that that if your worried about the drilling...then maybe doing it all yourself is a TAD above your level.
Have you done anything similar to this at all before? What kind of fab experience do you have?
Oh yeah, and welcome! Newbies don't get much "lovin'" around here, and since it's your first post, make sure you read the rules too. :flipoff2:
onetoncv 10-27-2002, 08:38 PM might want to take a welding class- :D Jess
Po' riggity 10-27-2002, 09:03 PM Umm if you have to ask about being able to do it yourself, you probably can't.

ChadLloyd 10-28-2002, 05:48 AM Just finished doing a waggy spring swap on my YJ. I used JC Whitney 5 leaf packs. I figure they MIGHT equal 1 inch of lift over the stock, completely flat YJ springs (with doubled mains) I was using before the swap. I did a fair amount of fender trimming - took the front fenders all the way back to the inner fender, and all the way up to the top of the stock fender, and the rear fenders trimmed rearwards right to the seam between the side panel and the back panel.
No rubbing with 38.5 SXs.
So it can be done with just a SOA. I also have a 1 inch body lift. You will need to do a LOT of trimming though - there's no way I could currently get the stock fender flares on the front of the jeep. They might fit on the rear, but unlikely.
Here's a picture that kinda shows the fender trimming:

ugly, I know, but I had to do it in a hurry - I hope to clean it up some more this winter.

SunsetOrange 10-28-2002, 07:25 AM Thanks for telling me to search. I'll take that into consideration. If I get all the details of the highsteer conversion then I can do it myself. I'm definitely capable of it. All I'm asking is if I can do it myself or is their any special machinary that is necessary. Like $20,000 machines that only specialized shops have. I can weld and I have friends that are great welders. Welding isn't the problem. I'm not a newbie exactly. Maybe on post counts but I have been looking around for a while. I expect to get flamed because most of you all are ruthless. :flipoff2: I'm just trying to learn a little more about jeeps. ;)
Hickeyjones 10-28-2002, 04:30 PM 38's will never fit on a jeep. Unless you get the bolt on kit from 4WD Hardware.
:D
SunsetOrange 10-28-2002, 07:13 PM So if I get the bolt on SOA kit I will be able to run 52 inch tires with not trimming. :p

Sometimes you just gotta take a chance and do it though, even if you are not sure you can do it. You have to learn somehow. If I didn't have this point of view I would probably be still taking my crap to a shop to get the oil changed. :D Its not like what he wants to do is all that hard.

bingo! Helps to have friends close by who have done it before, though. But ya gotta start somewhere.

You must be out of your damned mind!!!!!!! 38's will fit without some stupid "kit". Learn to weld fool.
Kreep 10-29-2002, 09:20 AM Ummm, Shaggy? I think that was what they call "humor" :jester:
PM me if you want it explained...
I'm running 38s w/ a spring over and stock Waggy 7 leafs. It does require some serious trimming though. Pictures can be seen under 'red CJ7' at www.lavenderbrothers.com

Maine Jeepah 10-29-2002, 05:56 PM sawzall, springover, and waggy 44's...works for me.
When those are trashed the 14 bolt and 60 front will go in.

i watch what you say mike i havent seen you weld shit on ur heep. You always said jeff did this and jeff did that. By the way you get tommys jeep yet ?
Meyer 10-31-2002, 05:52 PM IMHO, I would say get some help. That post about "go ahead and try it" is BS. You're talking about wheelin' and your steering, etc.
Learn to fab on stuff like rock rails, not steering and roll cages.

He isn't talking about fabbing steering parts or do a roll cage from what I saw it looks like he was just talking about drilling the knuckles out and little stuff like that. I assumed he would be buying some sort of kit or individual parts and did you read what he said here? It sounds like he is perfectly capable of doing it. Steering is not that hard.

Yup got the Jeep. Thanksgiving weekend I will be removing the Dana 30 and 35 and installing my fullwidths under it. Yeah, it's pretty hard to weld when you 1.) don't live where your jeep is and 2.) don't own a welder, but don't you worry little boy I cane weld. I do other things like engine and drivetrain work. It's called multi-tasking to get the job done faster.
How do you know me anyways?
