: 110 Questions

Okay,

I'm pretty new to Land Rovers. I've always appreciated them, but haven't ever looked seriously. So, yesterday I show the wife a pic of a 110, and after a few questions she announces that she wants it. Not the response I was expecting.

So now her BMW is posted for sale along with the "spare" car, and we've got an appointment wednesday morning to take a look at it.

I spent last night frantically looking for information, and I'm left with a few questions.

1) From what the seller tells me, it was produced in the mid-eighties, has a V8 and a 4-sp. The guy said it was a 3.5L, but the FAQ I read last night said that a LR 110 should have a 2.5 and the D110 should have a 3.9. Does this seem right? Is there anything I should know about either of these? Good, Bad, common???

2) I know the Defender name wasn't used until 1990 (1992 for the 110's). Aside from the name, what are the differences between the two rigs?

3) I have a question about the way that these things are imported and titled that I'm not sure I should ask in a public forum. If you have experience in or understand this process could you PM me?

4) The seller mentioned that there's some rust in the following places:

Rear Bumper
Outriggers
Lower sill of the rear window
Under the doors

Should any of these be deal breakers? Is there anywhere else I should check that might become an issue?

5) Any other issues I should be aware of?

6) Barring any serious problems what is a reasonable price range for this truck?

Thanks, in advance for all your help. I'm going to continue to research on my own, but is seems that information is very scarce on the earlier 110's. I just want to be sure I'm not getting scammed.

1) the 110's were first produced with the 2.25 engine, same as the series rigs had, both petrol and diesel, they then expanded to the 2.5 petrol and diesel, and added the 2.5TurboD.
also, they had the 3.5 carb (114bhp). when the 'defender' name came along (about 1991) they introduced the 2.5 200Tdi, this was changed to the 300Tdi about 1995, and in the last couple of years the Td5 is now the powerplant.
NAS 110's had the 3.9 EFI engine with LT77 or R380 gearbox.
No Auto 110's were production made.

2) differenced between the LR110 and the Defender 110 are: side tapes, different steering wheel, disc braked rear axles (on 90 and 110), the 200Tdi was introduced, power steering added as standard.

3) cannot be imported to the US unless it's a NAS spec 90 or 110 in 1995 or 1997 MY (Model Year) vintage.

4) rear crossmember? replacable with a welder and grinder, but check the rest of the chassis condition.
outriggers, replacable also, but if the crossmember AND outriggers are shot, then i'd guess that the rest of the frame is scrap too.
lower sill of the windows usually corrodes too, new door needed.
under the doors? is this the bottom of the door? then junk them, they rust right through.

5) if this is the condition of the rig, i'd offer a very cheap price, as it sounds like it needs a total rebuild...frame, doors, etc.

well if it is a mid 80's truck. that should be the deal breaker. Unless this truck has gone through the VERY EXPENSIVE and lobor intensive job of being brought up to U.S. specs, it is theoretically illegally here. Any state can deny you registration of the vehicle, and they can also come in and sieze the vehicle and destroy it.

Rovers North imported some 110's before Land Rover North America closed the door. So it is possible that the vehicle has legal registration. The 110's they brough in were from the 80's.

If it has legal registration then I would guess the price around 15k with the rust issuses mentioned. Less if the frame actually needs to be replaced.

In Australia that truck would only be worth $6k to $8k AUS.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Went to see it today. It wasn't in nearly as bad a condition as the seller made it out to be. The door lowers are gone, but he has a container coming from the UK in the next month and said he could probably get some in time to avoid having to ship them seterately. The window rust is in the channel that the rear-side windows slides on. He said that it's a steel insert that can be replaced. The rust under the doors would need to be repaired, but I don;t mind that. The rear bumper/crossmember was rusty, but it was mostly surface. The car has already been titled and registered in California.

The guy had it listed at $13,500 and said he had some room to go lower. What do you all think?? Deal or dud??

the steel inserts can be replaced in the rear windows, but it's a fiddly PITA job.
check carefully the rear crossmember, climb underneath and give it a good poke with a screwdriver or hammer. if the owner refuses to let you then he's hiding something.

offer lower! if HE offered a lower then go for it.

Oh Boy! Guess I get to call "nope!" on this one jamie,

The Defender model 90 did not always get a rear disk brake, they had drums for quite some time. Mine's a 1993 defender and it had drum rear brakes.

I'm feeling like a one armed man hanging from a clif by his remaining arms, and I'm getting an itch. Cannot believe I managed to correct jamie on something! <grin>

All the rest sounds good to me.
