: 60 or 9" front axle?
1248bullitt 10-27-2002, 10:06 PM Alright I am ready to get rid of the dana 50 ttb.:flipoff: I know that this is a big 60 crowd but I talked to steve at differential eng about a 9" front axle nodular case, 35 spline, det. locker, ford dana 60 outers w/ 8 lug hubs, brakes,1350 yoke. It came out to like $3500. I could possibly go with this or would I be better off just going with a built dana 60? My rig is an 87 f250 that is used for everything including dd. Not a huge fan of mud but some trail running and some rocks. I searched but didn't find much on the 9" cuz it isn't 2 letters long. So let me know what you guys think.

emsoffroad 10-27-2002, 11:57 PM The D60 is a bolt in stock style mod. Also should be cheaper, since you will have not have to make.. anything.
AZFord4x4 10-28-2002, 02:19 AM no shit
I can get ya a D60 that's a bolt in for hella less than $3500...
& it's going to be hella stronger.
I advise against building fullsizes for hardcore wheeling, but if that's what you really want to do, a 9" center ain't gonna cut it once you realize 38" tires are only the beginning for a fullsize LWB truck around here.

My slant is the Dana 60 is deffinatly a bolt in basically. So thats rather cheap and easy given the intended uses.
Although I think one could argue a full on 9" with all the right pieces could be as strong or in some cases stronger than a Dana 60..... but I figure that arguement has been done a few 100 times.
And AZFORD is correct IMHO....38"s is basically all terrain rubber if wheeling a fullsize.

1248bullitt 10-28-2002, 02:10 PM AZFord4x4: I have seen your rig in action (pics) and I don't need to flex like that. That would be nice just not gonna happen right now. Alright so no 9" front. What kinda 60 setup would you run? How much are they running out of junkyards? I think the f350 comes with a dana 60 front if I can find one should i just get that axle i'm searching but not really coming up with the info that I need. Thanx guys.

AZFord4x4 10-28-2002, 05:12 PM I should be able to get one for ya here in town with stock gear ratio of your choice (3.54, 4:10) tomorrow for $1850... if you do some digging around you might find one cheaper, but not by much. The bolt in aspect of it is quite nice though.
1248bullitt 10-28-2002, 05:48 PM Arrgghhhh I wish I would be ready for it that soon. So I need that w/4.10 gear, detroit, do you think the 30 spline shafts will hold up fine or should I switch them out for something else? Sorry about all the stupid questions.
Wes
emsoffroad 10-30-2002, 12:29 AM The inners will be 35 spl, outer 30spl. They will hold up fine for a while. Just depends on how you drive and use it. Also if you realy want one I can get you one for around $1200, but then you would have to ship it, around $300.
1248bullitt 10-30-2002, 04:55 PM Yes, I seriously want one. I picked up a Detroit locker for it today. I can't really do any work for about a month because I broke my thumb and it is in a cast right now. As soon as this thing is off I am going to pick one up. I can't wait. I will keep you guys in mind.

TuffTruck 10-30-2002, 10:20 PM Hey since were on the subject of 60s this is a stupid question dont get me wrong but what the fawk is the track bar for on the newer 60s its so short and tiny I feel I break it in two is there a reason for it old 60s dont have it do you really need it. Go look in a junk yard extended cab F250 77-79 cam with 60s and F350. I know of one for $800 complete so guy in BFE with a liitle parts yard and you already got a locker.

Ever Drive any leaf sprung Jeep Vehicals? Almost all of them had the shackles in the front, and every one like to wonder to some degree down the road. How do you get rid of this, install a trac bar. The 79- Fords used rear shackles, the 80+ Fords have shackles in the front. Also the shackles are an F'd up "A" shape. This tends to kill the lateral support.
u2slow 10-31-2002, 09:10 PM Anyone seen this thing?

It has a "solidified" D50 TTB in the front.
Not quite a Dana 60 - but a whole bunch cheaper!;)
emsoffroad 10-31-2002, 10:00 PM Saw a pic of that a while ago.
The slight gain over a D44 in strengh, I don't think it would be worth all the work. Plus the added weight of "connecting" the two beams. But it is kind-of cool to see some one take the time to do it.
1248bullitt 11-02-2002, 10:36 AM I found a 60 out of a '90 f350 with all steering components and 4.10 gears. This is what i'm looking for right? :emb4: Thanx
Wes
infoford 11-04-2002, 04:01 PM yup sure is
be sure you get the bracket for the trac arm off the frame
and all the steering linkage including the pitman arm off the steering box I am thinking it is slightly different in its angle
1248bullitt 11-04-2002, 05:20 PM No that one is gone! I am picking one up from a 79 f350 same thing?
Wes
NO! not the same, you want one from 1986+. the 1978/1979 D-60 has the spring purches closer together and the diff is in a different location too. This makes it NOT a good candidate to swap into your rig.
good luck.
Eric
Edit: but if you can score the '79 D-60 for not too much$$$ then get it for the future. it is 'THE' axle for swaping into other older rigs.
1248bullitt 11-04-2002, 07:10 PM FAWK!! The search continues.
Wes
John Deere Ranger 11-05-2002, 09:34 AM what is the differance in the newer 60's vs the older 60's in spring width?
u2slow 11-06-2002, 06:56 PM I think its 31-32" vs. 36".
Doesn't dound like a big deal 'til you realize that the LH spring pad is cast into the pumpkin. ;)
