: what the heck did I do?
StinkBug 10-28-2002, 08:43 AM Well I guess its good I didn't bring my rig to the Hammers this weekend, since it seems the freeway is just too tough for stinky to handle  Yesterday i spent a few hours changing oil and doin some needed maintenance. Then i decided to drive up to my girlfriends house. Went over to the gas station, put air in the tires, got it all warmed up, and got on the freeway, or at least tried. Got it into second goin downhill on the onramp, got the motor up to about 4000rpm and BANG! no longer have drive to the wheels. No noises of metal fragments banging around, no clunking, just one big bang. sounded quite similar to an axle shaft breaking. now i've got no forward or reverse, but Park will hold the truck in place. the torque converter is still spinning, the driveshafts are in place, the axles are fine, the shifter linkage is ok, nothing is leaking, no giant cracks in anything visible.
I'm pretty clueless when it comes to auto trannies, or trannies in general, so i'm askin you guys what do you think i'm in for when i drop the pan? I'm thinking (and hoping) that i broke the tranny input shaft, but I'm wondering how the hell i coulda done that with just a 4.3 gettin on the freeway. Any ideas?

Spank 10-28-2002, 10:32 AM DOH! That sux, but hey, don't feel bad, I broke a steering U-joint in the Shopping center Parking lot on Saturday night. Talk about a stupid break. I guess I better stay away from the malls and grocery stores, those parking lots are dangerous. I guess I need to avoid on-ramps now too huh? :D
How was the weekend?
StinkBug 10-28-2002, 10:38 AM The hammers was fun, i spent most of the time BSing and sittin around tho, not a whole lot of wheelin. I did try to kill myself on Chris and Jens dirt bikes tho. :flipoff2:

Grim Reaper 10-28-2002, 10:57 AM Ewwww that's bad that it will hold park and not go. My first guess would be it broke the pump input shaft or stripped the stator shaft splines off. Next guess would be that it broke the converter.
StinkBug 10-28-2002, 11:00 AM well thanks for tellin me what it could be, but since i dont really know what those things are except for the converter, could ya tell me about how difficult a repar this could be? and also how $$$ thanks.

I second that, sounds like something on the input side of the tranny blew
mytzlflick 10-28-2002, 11:35 AM if you don't know what they are describing its probably better to find a good tranny shop in the area or buy a used tranny.
I havn't ever tried an auto repair after I saw one apart, there are a heck of a lot of little bits and pieces in there to lose.
StinkBug 10-28-2002, 12:25 PM I have a general idea of what they are talking about, but a lot of times people use different terms for the same thing. The pump input shaft, is that the shaft thats pokin out the front of the tranny and slides into the TC?
Anyone know a site where i can get a breakdown of the parts of an auto tranny and what they are called. My mechanical ability is quite a bit better than most, but a lot of times i can disassemble fix and reassemble something and not even know what it is, just how it works, or how its put together. If it doesn't involve all sorts of special tools and a degree in particle physics i'm pretty sure i can fix it, and if i cant i'm gonna learn how, thats just the way I am. always have been, Started takin stuff apart before i could walk. Could identify every car on the road when i was 3 :D

Sounds like you broke the input shaft....see if you can spin the torque converter/flywheel while the vehicle is in park. If you can spin it with nothing else spinning.....gonna be $$. If so you might wanna get with your local tranny shop...

The stator shaft is the shaft sticking out of the front that had the splines on it. inside that shaft is the pump shaft. Both painfully obvious problems once you get the tranny out and the torque converter off. I haven't rebuilt a 700 just a th350. The pumps are usualy no big deal and a easy swap for most people that know how to use a torque wrench. Best bet is pull the pump and see if you have any obvious problems. The take the broken parts to the nearby NON chain shop and walk in there with "puppy dog eyes and I'm dirt poor look and need to fix my shit cheap" look on your face and see if they have some used parts laying around. When my TH350 Spit out the sprag I needed a new drum, pump had a bad stator and the sprag and the guy down the street set me up with like new parts for $50.
http://www.delta-transparts.com/ if your having trouble with finding the parts local. This company sells to the shops. Not counting the above parts they sold me everying I needed to rebuild my TH350 including seals, clutches, band, steels and a rebuild converter for $125 plus shipping. That's the wear parts needeed to rebuild most tranny. Parts like pumps are expensive.

Umm i'm not quite following you, normally in park with the engine running the TC/flywheel would be spinning, which is the same as it is now. with the engine off neither will spin, since they are bolted to the motor.

SSSRodeo 10-28-2002, 01:33 PM Dallas,Maybe you should ask Richard Saylor. He know everything.:flipoff2:
Sounds like an input shaft to me dude!
Not impossible just a pain in the butt as there is no way around having to pull the whole tranny to fix the damn thing.
Bummer Dude!

StinkBug 10-28-2002, 01:38 PM Grim reaper thanks for the link, do any of you know of a site with a how-to on rebuilding one of these, or where to find a manual. I'm supposed to leave for moab next wednesday, so i'm in a hurry for sure.

SSSRodeo 10-28-2002, 01:45 PM Dallas, Go to the library and find a Rebuild Video on the tranny. They were done by Peterson Publishing. I have them here so I figure the library should have them too!

LOPPY 10-28-2002, 02:39 PM Now's a good time to 86 that oil pumper and put a real tranny in. I suggest a T18. :D
StinkBug 10-28-2002, 02:58 PM SUCK IT!!! I pulled my old 5speed for the slushbox, and i dont regret it. Still got one more til i'm up to the fatality count i had with the stick, and this one might be fixable.
Dallas
EDIT: oops forgot the :flipoff2:
LOPPY 10-28-2002, 04:01 PM Haaaahahahaha... 5 speed? Must not have been an NV4500 then. What was it? An Amigo 5 speed? No wonder why it kept crapping out on you. :D They're about as tough as a Peugot. hahahahaha... :flipoff2:
How many times my T18 has let me down = Zero! :D
Slushies are great fun, but this is the price one must pay. So pay up. :flipoff2:
BTW, I agree, it's your imput shaft.

A lot you know, Lop. :p The Isuzu trannies are darn stout -- relatively massive internals, the only downside is the aluminum case. It isn't a T-18, but it is WAY stronger than the Pew-go that cursed the Wrangler.
Dallas kept killing his by finding creative ways to drain the fluid out of them while running them down the road....

You're not counting that hernia? :flipoff2:
I'm with ya on the auto-bashing tho!
